Google Sidebar

Google Desktop Beta

Google has just launched a new service called Sidebar. It is used in combination with Google Desktop Search and is in Beta 2 version.

Download it and enjoy another great item courtesy of Google Labs. A lot of other programs do run like a Sidebar but somehow if its Google, I’m all for it. You even have to ability to download neat Plugin to improve the overall look. I now have Yahoo Widgets and Google Sidebar on my computer makes me feel high tech, lets see how long I live this latest fad. Google Rocks!!

There are still privacy issues with Google Desktop Search … I don’t trust them with my PC’s complete info yet!

Privacy issues, hmm I wonder why becoz the desktop search is only local indexing only and has nothing to do with an online connection. Try it once you would be astonished how quickly it finds stuff and you WILL NEVER use the windows search ever again.

When you launch Desktop Search it open up127.0.0.1 which is a local search and thats it. Hell if you are worried about Google picking up your data, I would be mroe worried about entrusting Microsoft as I practically live on a Microsfot windows. Over to you – would like to hear your concerns on this matter

google notifier sucks .. use google talk .. its better and lets the gmail notifications come in too

TDH – I agree Google Talk rocks, I just DL and instantly got rid of the notifier that was crappy.

desktop search does only a local search on the computer hence using a private IP int he URL like 127.0.0.1 – I mention it as our collegue Razz assumes that all data is sent to Google.

127.0.0.1 is a loopback address for your local machine. you might wanna read kottke’s write up about webOS’s, but basically to go to http://127.0.01 you need to have a webserver on your local drive. that’s basically what google desktop search is. a webserver which indexes (crawls) your hard drive.
