Bush Heading Towards Martial Law?

US Martial Law

President Bush has signed into law a provision which will actually encourage the President to declare federal martial law. It does so by revising the Insurrection Act, a set of laws that limits the President’s ability to deploy troops within the United States. The Insurrection Act (10 U.S.C.331 -335) has historically, along with the Posse Comitatus Act (18 U.S.C.1385), helped to enforce strict prohibitions on military involvement in domestic law enforcement. With one cloaked swipe of his pen, Bush is seeking to undo those prohibitions.

Public Law 109-364, or the “John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007″ (H.R.5122), which was signed by the commander-in-chief on October 17th, 2006, allows the President to declare a “public emergency” and station troops anywhere in America and take control of state-based National Guard units without the consent of the governor or local authorities, in order to “suppress public disorder.”

President Bush seized this unprecedented power on the very same day that he signed the equally odious Military Commissions Act of 2006. In a sense, the two laws complement one another. One allows for torture and detention abroad, while the other seeks to enforce acquiescence at home, preparing to order the military onto the streets of America. Remember, the term for putting an area under military law enforcement control is precise; the term is “martial law.”

I look at this change with a great deal of suspicion, if Bush has the country in full control why does he need to alter the US constitution to give him the right to enforce a martial law. On the lighter side maybe President Musharraf in his recent visit was able to give him some important pointers on how to trample on the countries constitution and remain in power well beyond his allotted 8 years in office.

[...] Right now there is a lot of chatter going on about martial law and such. Most of it pertains to Public Law: 109-364 Section 1076. So I thought I would post what the Title 10 Section 333 read before the law was passed and what it will read now. This little exercise showed me why Americans feel so dis-engaged from the political process. The wording of what is now the new section 333 is mind numbingly convoluted and could be confusing to some people. For me it is clear. It seems that the Congress is asleep at the wheel right now and has been for a long time. [...]

Do not fear President Bush has only to January 2009 to wreak his havoc on the world.
Actually, the next campaign for President will start after November 7 and Bush cannot run again.
By the way, like the American Predator attacks on Al Qaeda today? Oh and in Pakistan.

Troubling except for one very serious problem. Remember Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans? Even good Republicans are still mad at him over that one. President Bush did nothing after Katrina until he had the go-ahead from Governor Blanco, just as the law required. This law would change that and would allow a President to immediate take charge of the situation and get the aid going. The problem is, this law allows new powers which could be misused. Unless insurrection resulted from Katrina, doing anything at all would have been an impeachable offense. Frankly, I think he should have taken the impeachment and attempted to help right away. Tough call–helping or breaking your oath of office.

I find this scary.I have been telling people that I believe that Bush will suspend the 2008 presidential elections and that he would do this by declaring a national emergency, national security reasons or by just declaring martial law thereby making it possible for him to remain in office and to become the first dictator of the USA. The people sleep or just do not care that their rights have been taken from them. I hope and pray that we are wrong, but I doubt it.
