Missing Pakistani – Dr. Afia Siddiqui – Prisoner 650
A few days back the Asian Human Rights Commission issued an urgent press release about a Pakistani, Dr. Afia Siddiqui, who has been missing from Pakistan for over four years, since 2003. Her kidnapping has since then been denied by both American and Pakistani governments but actually she has been suspected of being an operative of Al-Qaeda and has been on FBI’s wanted list. There is reason to believe that she is also one of the missing persons who had been ‘handed over’ to the Americans courtesy of Pervaiz Musharraf. Let us not forget that the missing persons case was a turning point in the history of Pakistan where Pervaiz Musharraf had a severe falling out with the then CJP Iftikhar Chaudhry who was investigating this case and probably stepped on a few toes definitely ended up rumbling a few skeleton locked within Musharraf’s treasure chest of hidden secrets

Dr. Afia Siddiqui left her mother’s house in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi, Sindh province, along with her three children, in a Metro-cab on March 30, 2003 to catch a flight for Rawalpindi, Punjab province, but never reached the airport. The press reports claimed that Dr. Afia had been picked-up by Pakistani intelligence agencies while on her way to the airport and initial reports suggested that she was handed over to the American Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). At the time of her arrest she was 30 years and the mother of three sons the oldest of which was four and the youngest only one month.
A few days later an American news channel, NBC, reported that Afia had been arrested in Pakistan on suspicion of facilitating money transfers for terror networks of Osama Bin Laden. The mother of the victim, Mrs. Ismat (who has since passed away) termed the NBC report absurd. She went on to say that Dr. Afia is a neurological scientist and has been living with her husband, Amjad, in the USA for several years.
On April 1, 2003, a small news item was published in an Urdu daily with reference to a press conference of the then Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat. When questioned with regard to Dr. Afia’s arrest he denied that she had been arrested. This was followed by another Urdu daily article on April 2 regarding another press conference in which the same minister said Dr. Afia was connected to Al Qaeda and that she had not been arrested as she was absconding. He added: “You will be astonished to know about the activities of Dr. Afia” A Monthly English magazine of Karachi in a special coverage on Dr. Afia reported that one week after her disappearance, a plain clothed intelligence went to her mother’s house and warned her, “We know that you are connected to higher-ups but do not make an issue out of your daughter’s disappearance.” According to the report the mother was threatened her with ‘dire consequences’ if she made a fuss.
Whilst Dr. Afia’s whereabouts remain unknown, there are reports of a woman called ‘Prisoner 650′ is being detained in Afghanistan’s Bagram prison and that she has been tortured to the point where she has lost her mind. Britain’s Lord Nazeer Ahmed, (of the House of Lords), asked questions in the House about the condition of Prisoner 650 who, according to him is physically tortured and continuously raped by the officers at prison. Lord Nazeer has also submitted that Prisoner 650 has no separate toilet facilities and has to attend to her bathing and movements in full view of the other prisoners.
Also, on July 6, 2008 a British journalist, Yvonne Ridley, called for help for a Pakistani woman she believes has been held in isolation by the Americans in their Bagram detention centre in Afghanistan, for over four years. “I call her the ‘grey lady’ because she is almost a ghost, a spectre whose cries and screams continues to haunt those who heard her,” Ms Ridley said at a press conference.
Ms Ridley, who went to Pakistan to appeal for help, said the case came to her attention when she read the book, The Enemy Combatant, by a former Guantanamo detainee, Moazzam Begg. After being seized in February 2002 in Islamabad, Mr Begg was held in detention centres in Kandahar and Bagram for about a year before he was transferred to Guantanamo Bay. He recounted his experiences in the book after his release in 2005. Mr. Imran Khan, leader of Justice Party (T.I) suspects that prisoner 650 is the Dr. Afia Siddiqui and USA and Pakistani authorities are hiding facts of ‘Prisoner 650′.
To date, neither the American nor the Pakistani government have come out about the arrest and detention of Dr. Afia in either Bagram or Guantanamo Bay where suspected terrorists are held. On December 30, 2003 Dr. Fawzia Siddiqui, Dr. Afia’s elder sister met with Mr Faisal Saleh Hayat at Islamabad with Mr Ejazul Haq, MNA, regarding the whereabouts of Dr. Afiai. Mr Faisal told Dr. Fawzia and Mr Ejazul Haq that according to his information Dr. Afia Siddiqui had already been released and that she (Dr. Fawzia) should go home and wait for a phone call from her sister.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Dr. Afia Siddiqui, who studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US, for about 10 years and did her PhD in genetics, returned to Pakistan in 2002. Having failed to get a suitable job, she again visited the US on a valid visa in February 2003 to search for a job and to submit an application to the US immigration authorities. She moved there freely and came back to Karachi by the end of February 2003 after renting a post office box in her name in Maryland for the receipt of her mail. It has been claimed by the FBI (Newsweek International, June 23, 2003, issue) that the box was hired for one Mr Majid Khan, an alleged member of Al Qaeda residing in Baltimore.
Throughout March 2003 flashes of the particulars of Dr. Afia were telecast with her photo on American TV channels and radios painting her as a dangerous Al Qaeda person needed by the FBI for interrogation. On learning of the FBI campaign against her she went underground in Karachi and remained so till her kidnapping. The June 23, 2003, issue of Newsweek International was exclusively devoted to Al Qaeda. The core of the issue was an article “Al Qaeda’s Network in America”. The article has three photographs of so-called Al Qaeda members – Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, Dr. Afia Siddiqui and Ali S. Al Marri of Qatar who has studied in the US like Dr. Siddiqui and had long since returned to his homeland. In this article, which has been authored by eight journalists who had access to FBI records, the only charge leveled against Dr. Afia is that “she rented a post-office box to help a former resident of Baltimore named Majid Khan (alleged Al Qaeda suspect) to help establish his US identity.
NewsLine while doing a story in 2003 – Mysterious Cover-up Mazhar Abbass reports that
Surprisingly there has been no official report registered with the police about Afia’s disappearance which explains why Afia’s mother wanted to avoid going public. The police, meanwhile, is doing nothing to trace Afia. “We have no knowledge about this case nor has anyone contacted me,” said Sindh police chief, Syed Kamal Shah. Ismat Siddiqui, however, claims that she has spoken to high police officials, including Shah, about her daughter’s disappearance. A week after the incident, Mrs. Siddiqui alleges that an intelligence agency official came to her house and warned her not to make an issue out of her daughter’s disappearance and threatened her with dire consequences.

Months later, the FBI would make its most devastating claim against Siddiqui. It was still dark on the morning of March 1, 2003, when Pakistani authorities arrested Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, a known September 11 mastermind, at a Karachi safe house. The arrest made news around the world. It also presaged the extraordinary vanishing act of AafiaSiddiqui and her three small children.” It seems Khalid Sheikh Mohammed gave up Aafia’s name as being a major Al Qaeda operative.” However, one of her defenders saysSiddiqui ’s identity was likely stolen. “Aafia was, I think, probably a pretty naive and trusting person and my guess is it would be pretty easy for somebody who wanted to steal an identity to just steal it.” About a month after his capture in the spring of 2003, she disappeared.
The question is where is Afia and why are police and intelligence agencies silent? Is she in the custody of the FBI or the ISI? Another possibility is that Afia might have been kidnapped by her ex-husband, who may have links with Al-Qaeda. Whatever the case, there seems to be a deliberate attempt to hush up the mysterious circumstances behind Afia Siddiqui’s disappearance

I m feeling regret,guilty and shame to be Pakistani. Israhil may be in the state of war for 36 days just for the sake of two dead bodies of soldiers. I can’t describe how ashamed I am for being a Pakistani. I really wish that I had been born in another country. I can only pray for Dr.Aafia. When American senator said that Pakistanis can sell their mothers for some dollars, I was extremely angry but now thinking of it, how true he said.

I am shocked and deeply moved after coming to know about Dr. Afia Siddiqui, what a talent she was..she had done her Phd. in neurology from USA.. what was her crime and what proof the dmaned Americans have against her..even if they had some proof under which law they have abducted her along her kids, and in which court she was produced and tried, at this moment I am ashemd to call myself a Pakistani.. really! Firstly, we should not be ashamed to be PAKISTANIS’ because Pakistan as our home land has nothing to do with the actions of PEOPLE living in it. Just like we are not responsible in being born rich or poor. Some acts of God are merely meant to be accepted. So nothing to be ashamed off.

I am deeply disturbed by the story of Dr. Afia. considering her talent and achievements i have no doubt that she was national asset and see what our leaders have done to her. WASHINGTON, Aug 3: Five years after her mysterious disappearance in Karachi, the FBI has finally conceded that an MIT-trained Pakistani neuroscientist is alive and is in US custody in Afghanistan.
Aafia Siddiqui, 36, disappeared with her three children while visiting her parents’ home in Karachi in March 2003, around the same time the FBI announced that it wanted to question her over her alleged links to Al Qaeda.
Her family’s lawyer Elaine Whitfield Sharp said she believed recent media reports about Mrs Siddiqui’s incarceration increased pressure on the US and Pakistani authorities to divulge more information.
“I don’t believe that they just found Aafia,” she said. “I believe that she was there all along.”
The fate of her three young, American-born children is still unknown.
Before her disappearance, Mrs Siddiqui lived in a Boston suburb of Roxbury and studied at Brandeis University as well as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
In a 2006 report, Amnesty International listed Mrs Siddiqui as among a number of “disappeared” suspects in the war on terrorism. On July 6, 2007, AI listed Mrs Siddiqui as a possible CIA “secret detainee”, although she was still on the FBI’s Seeking Information – Terrorism list. Late last week, Mrs Siddiqui’s photo still appeared on the FBI’s list of people wanted for questioning.
Since no charges were ever filed against her, human rights groups treated her case as that of “extrajudicial detention”, although no government ever claimed detaining her.
Even the FBI does not mention any charges in the notice seeking information about her. “Although the FBI has no information indicating this individual is connected to specific terrorist activities, the FBI would like to locate and question this individual,” says the notice.
The “gray lady of Bagram”: On July 7, a British journalist Yvonne Ridley told a news conference in Islamabad that a Pakistani woman had been held in solitary confinement for years at the Bagram US base near Kabul. The identity of this prisoner remains unconfirmed. She has been nicknamed the “gray lady of Bagram”. Ms Ridley, however, speculated that she was Aafia Siddiqui.
Moazzam Begg and several other former captives also have reported that a female prisoner, prisoner 650, was held in Bagram. The former captives claim that she has lost her sanity and cries all the time.
Although it is still not clear if the “gray lady of Bagram” is Aafia Siddiqui, her family’s attorney told reporters on Friday that the FBI had finally conceded that Mrs Siddiqui is in US custody.
“It has been confirmed by the FBI that Aafia Siddiqui is alive,” said Ms Sharp, who said she spoke to an FBI official on Thursday.
“She is injured but alive, and she is in Afghanistan.”
For five years, US and Pakistani authorities denied knowing her whereabouts. But human rights groups and Mrs Siddiqui’s relatives had long suspected that she had been captured in Karachi and secretly taken into custody.
On Thursday, an FBI official visited Mrs Siddiqui’s brother in Houston to deliver the news that she was alive and in custody, Ms Sharp said.
FBI officials, however, would not say who was holding her or reveal the fate of her children.
“If she’s in US custody, they want to know where she is,” Ms Sharp said. “Who has got her? And does she need medical care?”
The FBI and the Justice Department declined to comment.
US military documents declassified in recent years suggest that Mrs Siddiqui is suspected of having ties to several key terrorism suspects being held at the Guantanamo Bay detention centre.
She is believed to have links to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and allegedly arranged travel documents for another suspected terrorist.
Papers in Guantanamo Bay also indicate that she married Ali Abd Al Aziz Ali, an alleged Al Qaeda facilitator who intended to blow up petrol stations or poison water reservoirs in the United States.
The three men were among 14 high-value suspects brought to Guantanamo Bay in 2006 after years of secret detention in CIA prisons in Eastern Europe.

Today’s Dawn carries this report: Aafia Siddiqui, an MIT-educated Pakistani woman,has been brought to New York to face charges that she tried to kill U.S. agents and military officers during an interrogation in Afghanistan.Siddiqui, 36, was stopped by Afghan police on July 17(2008?!-query mine)) outside a government building, according to a criminal complaint. Police searched her handbag and discovered documents containing recipes for explosives and chemical weapons and describing “various landmarks in the United States, including New York City,” according to the complaint, which did not identify the landmarks. The next day, as a team of FBI agents and U.S. military officers prepared to question her, Siddiqui grabbed a rifle, pointed it at an army captain and yelled that she wanted blood, prosecutors said. An interpreter pushed the rifle aside as she fired two shots, which missed, they said. One of two shots fired by a soldier in response hit her in the torso. Even after being hit, Siddiqui struggled and shouted in English “that she wanted to kill Americans” before the officers subdued her, the complaint said.
Aafia’s family attorney, Elaine Whitfield Sharp,called the charges “a tall story.”

I read her plight for the first time in today’s morning newspaper and its almost 5 o’clock in the morning after the whole day and I cannot go to sleep with the shock, horror and shame of what has happened to Dr. Afia and I am stunned by so many things in this case, I can make no heads and tails of it. We are at the stage where our life worths not more than a barking dog. We have such Leaders who are leading a sleeping nation with open eyes. Whatever happened with Dr. Afia, we are responsible for that. We choose a Government who is American assitant posted in Pakistan for their operations. I appeal that every reader should play his/her part, whatever you think could be benificial for the release of Dr. Afia from that prison. And we should also try to change ourself as well. The story starts that Dr. Afia Siddiqui left her mother’s house on March 30, 2003, along with her three kids for airport to catch a flight to Islamabad. If detected, so far so good – if not, no worries. Are they still with ill fated Dr. Afia or they returned to their grand mother’s house saying “we missed the bus”. Or, they are no more.
Then, there was mention of her husband. Dr. Afia’s mother has been reported as saying that her daughter was dwelling with her hubby in States. Of course, this was said under pressure. But my question is, where is her husband? No clue in the cover story!
Like many of my brothers and sisters expressed their sentiments in their comments in here, “humans for sale” and that too for a few dollars, my question is also this “Are we a Dollar hungry nation?”. It is true this was the act of few people who were unfortunately powers that be. But these “few people” have painted a wrong picture of the nation as a whole. Today, Pentagon has a perception about Pakistan. “Pakistan is the only country in the world where anything could be initiated that USA desired at that specific moment – just hand over some dollars.” Let me tell you one thing for sure. Those days are gone. The public awareness is rising every passing day. And let Pentagon know, that after spending so much of American Security funds, the desired result is nowhere near. The guilt of belonging to the same nation of those leaders who sold out their own daughter grew even more when I read the last line of the column saying that some US army officer once said that Pakistani’s could even sell their mother for $20,000…..And Alas! we proved it!!

1. Pakistan Army should stop cooperating with (and taking military aid from) any and all military, intelligence and any other security agencies based, sponsored or funded by USA.
2. A trial has already begun in US courts alleging her that she helped terrorists. A counter trial should be initiated by Muslims. Expert and only expert lawyers from around the US, especially Muslims lawyers, should hired for this case and funding can be guaranteed by asking zakat and khairat donations throughout the world, through Muslim websites and Media channels.
3. Purpose of the trial – to expose and bring to justice the persons & departments in US Govt. involved in :
a. Authorizing kidnapping of Afia Siddiqui,
b. People involved in detaining her in Pakistan, Afghanistan and USA and exposing all the locations and places she has been taken to.
c. Inform and find her children – where they were during all this time, what traumas they have faced
d. Persons, who authorized and implemented any kind of torture on her children and who were responsible for detaining them
e. Bring to justice any military official involved in physically torturing Afia Siddiqui while she was kept in US, Pakistani & Afghani custody.
f. Expose all the plastic surgery of Afia Siddiqui, either it was dental facial or any kind of cosmetic treatment or any other kind of treatment performed on Afia Siddiqui between the dates of March 30, 2003 upto her 11th August 2008.
g. Expose the name of the persons involved in master minding and authorizing the plastic surgery for obstruction of justice. Those

I am glad that current government is at-fleast trying to do something about it. This is all because of President Musharraf who is the most coward man the history has produced. I personally lived in USA for almost five years and felt that these guys are really good when you are in their country but their policies totally gets changed when they are dealing with international community. They arrested / kidnapped her when she was in Pakistan. Why they didn’t arrest her when she was in USA ? I think because they would have to answer many people within USA but in Pakistan Mr. Musharraf simply took som $$$$$ and kidnapped her. She has been transferred to a “facility” in Dallas/Ft. Worth area, it has a ward for mentally sick prisoner. I am sorry I do not have specifics on this.
I don’t know if her trial will continue in Manhattan, court room in New York was jam packed at the hearing last time. I am not sure if this was the reason for her transfer to Texas.

The truth is however, that Carswell Psychiatric Centre is a top notch facility. The only reason she is there is that Siddiqui’s lawyers were demanding that she be moved to a place where she could get psychological help.

Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani neuroscientist who grew up in the U.S. and went to top universities, including the prestigious MIT university, who had an outstanding record as a student. She had to leave the U.S. when the authorities began harassing her and her husband for their charity activities. They came back to Karachi, Pakistan. One day in March 2003, this talented young woman was picked up by Pak & FBI operatives from Karachi, and then sent to Afghanistan where she was tortured, and kept in a prison at US detention facility at Bagaram without any trial and charges against her. In 2005 when Moazzam Beg was released from Guantanamo, he wrote a book Enemy Combatant in which he explains that in his detention at bagaram many times he listened screams of a woman which still today echoing in his nightmares. Later on he came to know from his fellow detainees who were also transferred from Bagram to Guanatanamo, that they had same experience of listening terrible screams of woman. Similarly in 2005 four detainees of Bagaram escaped and while on run they gave interview to a tv Channel Al Arabia about their escape and also revealed that there is Pakistani woman detainee, who is brutally tortured by US Soldiers and her screams prompted them to go for a hunger strike for six days, to pressurize US soldiers, to end torturing her.
Yvone Ridely, a british journalist after reading moazzam’s book, starts the quest for that lady prisoner and disclosed the fact in a press conference in July 2008 that the Ghost Prisoner 650, is Dr Afia Siddiqui. At this point US authorities were being under attack from all human rights organizations around the world and they had no other alternative but to disclose her detention. They did it, but in way that their cooked story was even beyond the reach of Hollywood scriptwriters, claiming that she was caught in Afghanistan near the governor’s office with explosives substance in July 2008. This half alive woman assaulted a team of FBI & US troops with M4 Rifle and shot several rounds of fire. Surprisingly none of the US soldier got bullet, they remained safe but in self-defense they shot her.
Now US officials are completely ignorant about her disappearance from 2003 to july 2008 which is a blatant lie, trying to hide her five year secret detention and inhuman torture in a story which no one can believe. In five years of her detention she was not charged with anything. And that is proof of her innocence which we should not forget.
Although one of her child is repatriated to Pakistan but two are still missing, who were being kidnapped along with her. There are also some reports that one of her child died in detention.
We don’t have any hope that she will get a fair trial in US Court. Now this is a time for all of us who believe in humanity, justice and truth, to stand up for our innocent sister.
We must exert all our pressure for demanding immediate release of Dr Afia and her children.

My recommendation for Pakistani Govt:
ANY BODY INVOLVED BLINDLY (NOT EVEN BLINDLY) ISSUING ORDERS TO ARREST DR. AFIA SIDDIQUI AND HAVE HER SENT TO AFGHANISTAN SHOULD BE TAKEN DOWN FROM HIS WRONGLY ACQUIRED POSITION AND HUNG.
ALSO PAKISTAN MUST FOR GOD SAKE STOP SUPPORTING U.S. IN THE NAME OF FIGHT AGAINST TERRORISM.

I was just looking at the most commented entries of this blog and found it interesting that what ppl think are their priorities, I mean if someone take their time to comment on a news it must be important for them. Juiciest story for most ppl is Zaid Hamid, with 672 comments. I wonder why? and the least commented entry is “10 lessons All Pakistani must learn” only 60 comments!

Well i would say its not fair that a women is being disrespected in such a way.Well certainly it is so sad seeing that our citizen is being tortured in such a way and theres no one to support her and stretch out a hand of concern or justcie to her.I think that no one should be treated this way that is the way which they are treating a prisoner under 650.No one has rights to physically abuse any person its quite shamefull to see such bitter facts of life.I would want to say that if in prision people are abused where does the law and order disappear?arent those abuse illegal?I think its useless to have such legal rules and regulation when they are being broken and its disgusting to see tht our citizens have failed to provide her justice and have just kept quite and watching and knowing the facts.Its a shame on all the seniors and the superiors not helping her.I think people who cant help there citizens dont deserve to run the country.

Please stop bickering about her ex-husband. I am not sure if that’s really her ex-husband saying whatever is printed in the media, he hasn’t come out of where ever he is. Given the credibility of Pak media, I won’t believe a word that is printed unless I see him on TV with my own eyes.
The point is that Aafia is in desperate situation, regardless of what her crime/s are, she should not be mistreated at the hands of flag bearer of humanity.
Personally, I blame Pakistani gov for all or bulk of her problems, and she can be helped by Pak gov more than any one else.
