In the past few weeks there has been a buzz spreading around Pakistan’s digital world talking about the recent fame surrounding the TV show personality Zaid Hamid who conducts a show on TV One called Brasstacks. It should be mentioned that brasstacks is reportedly a paid-for show which has started airing barely a few months back and has developed a very strong following amongst the masses. Admittedly Zaid Hamid is quite eloquent in his show and is well versed in his explaining his innumerable concepts of ranging from economic terrorism by the Zionists to other such issues which are poised at him even Islamic issues
I too have been guilty of occasionally catching a glimpse of his show and did even carry his five part series on Economic Terrorism. All seemed well until a close associate contacted me via facebook sharing his concerns about Zaid Zaman Hamid and revealed his suspicious association with Yousuf Ali, a self proclaimed prophet from Lahore in the 1990’s. Zaid Zaman was purportedly the right hand man of Yousuf Ali and was fondly referred to as his Hazrat Ali. Zaid Zaman was instrumental in spreading the message of prophecy far across Pakistan, to develop a large cult like following in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad mostly due to Zaid Zaman’s excellent communication skills.
Yousuf Ali had been preaching his divine revelation to his followers for quite many years when finally a handful defected and braved to testify against him in the Lahore High Court which ultimately gave Yousuf Ali, a death sentence on charges of Blasphemy. Yousuf Ali was then confined to Kot Lakhpath jail and in 2001 was shot dead by a fellow prisoner. Throughout the legal proceedings one witness after another testified to the fact that Zaid Zaman was a key figure in the promotion of Yousuf Ali’s Kazzab movement. I have been told that there even does exists an analog video of Zaid Zaman standing beside Yousuf Ali while he addressed his followers in Lahore. Somehow the fact that Zaid Zaman was a key figure in this movement is generally a foregone conclusion, as there are one too many eye witnesses and more importantly numerous had testified the fact which may even be present in the records of Lahore High Court, including Zaid Zaman’s testimony to the honorable judge, all records are securely preserved in the archives of Tahaffuz-e-Khatm-e-Nabuwwat in Karachi.
The Zaid Zaman Hamid storm actually started with the email from Naufil Shahrukh, a close friend whom I have known since 1990, the email at first in the form of a private message on Facebook but soon propagated online and published on Dictatorship Watch, verbatim
If you guys remember the Pakistan false prophet, Yousuf Ali, who was arrested and sentenced to death by the Lahore High Court and then murdered in Kot Lakhpat jail by a fellow prisoner – this guy Zaid Hamid was known as Zaid Zaman at that time and was the Khalifah of that Kazzab. Zaid is still leading that cult which belongs to the Firqah Batinyah of Sufism and they have a different aqeedah altogether which they only profess within their inner core. Many of my personal friends fell prey to his charisma in the 1990s, some of them reverted back to Hidayah and were instrumental in filing a case against Yusuf Ali which ultimately lead to his death sentence and the cult members dispersed for a few years.
The time line of events that he narrates in his letter are erringly accurate and when Naufil mentioned to me later pointing out the common friends who fell prey to this cult one does weigh in a sigh of relief to have been spared of the poison. The most logical reason as to why our neighborhood was penetrated to such an extent can be attributed to the fact that Zaid Hamid hailed from our locality. Off the friends who willingly embraced Yousuf Ali’s prophecy was Ryzwan Tayyab who very soon featured himself as a militant leader of the movement and after the collapse of this movement has retreated into a cocoon of severe depression irreparably damaging his family around him. Ryzwan was also involved in actually issuing death threats to the few journalists who were critically investigating Yousuf Ali back in those days.
The resurfacing of Zaid Hamid after 15 years of hibernation is interesting, he catapults himself in 2006 as a security threat analyst frequently publishing PDF based Pakistan threat reports for a subscription fee of Rs. 25,000 but within a span of a two years mustered up enough finances to launch a self sponsored TV show which started transmission in the early months of 2008, suspiciously timed around the fall of the Pervaiz Musharraf’s regime. The sudden shot to fame on TV is being compared to the launch of Dr. Shahid Masood’s End of Time series, which too was based on an eloquent anchor with one too many theories to present.
Off the numerous people stepping forth to expose Zaid Hamid the must read narration is of a two year email correspondence between Zaid Hamid and Abidullah Jan. It gives an insight onto Zaid Zaman when he first started sharing his BrassTacks Security reports, slowly moving into becoming a much sought after personality. What was interesting to read was when in the early months of 2007 Zaid Zaman approached Abidullah Jan struggling to stay afloat and requested Abid to help promote his security reports to a wider audience “I am in need of some clients to stay afloat as I am being squeezed by the government’s men for being too open and ruthless”. Zaid Hamid a few months later, after the 3rd Nov Martial Law appeared on a couple of pro-Musharraf TV shows on PTV with Ahmed Qureshi. Then suddenly out of the blue he is able to muster up enough finances to launch a self sponsored show on TV One. Watching a person flutter from being financially strapped and haunted by ‘government’s men’ to appearing on a pro-Musharraf show, then having catapulting into his own show seems all too suspiciously the work of some ‘hidden hands‘
If coincidence was anything to go by, I also noted that around this time emerged Zaid Hamid’s articles on a very staunch pro-Musharraf proponent Ahmed Quraishi who continues to wage an online battle with the Anti-Musharraf sect. When today I inquisitively launched a witch hunt for Zaid Hamid on the website I was surprised to see that quite a few of Zaid Hamid’s editorials were missing for example the January 29th article which should have led to the page has been removed from the website sometime after September 5th 2008 [as indicated by the Google Cache] and this is not the only article missing of the series, I wonder why the sudden cover up after September 5th by Ahmed Quraishi.
The only acknowledgment of any link with Yousuf Ali came from an email shared with me privately where Zaid Hamid Alhamdolillah, i have nothing to do with Yousuf or his beliefs or any other people like him.
Lest I be charged of taking this message out of context I share with you the entire section of the email so people may understand his response fully

I have traveled with Iranian revolution, have faught in Afghan Jihad, have gone out with Tablighi Jmaat, spent time with Jamaat Islami, have met hundreds of people including Dr. Israr, Ahmad deedat, Yusuf Islam, Anne Marrie schimmel and so on and so forth. Have also been with sufi groups in Pakistan, Turkey, Madina and Cyprus. I have also seen the western society, its civilization from a close range. Whatever I speak and do today, is the result of these experiences in life but with the mercy of Allah, He protected his humble slaves and keeps them in His infinite mercy and guidance. He showed me the world and people, but kept me away from their harm and made me benefit from any khair they had.
I also met and studied many objectionable people who were controversial but in the end Allah kept me away from them. It was all learning experiences. Alhamdolillah, i have nothing to do with Yusuf or his beliefs or any other people like him
Though he puts forth a convincing argument but it seems yet again that he refuses to acknowledge his association with Yousuf Ali to categorically say that he has “nothing to do with Yousuf or his beliefs” is this admittance of his association or denial of the fact?
Proponents of Zaid Hamid continue to plead his innocence even today as Pakistan First blog, which has been previously labeled to have a strong pro-Musharraf tilt, shared an article by Asif Shiraz who writes Zaid Hamid: As I knew him
I first met Zaid hamid at the youthful age of 17, when the emotions were high, and the search for truth pristine and innocent. A friend had told me about Zaid Hamid, and I was anxious to meet him: I was not disappointed. Our first meeting was a blast. I enjoyed Zaid sahib’s charismatic talk on many different issues, especially his passion about Islam and his knowledge on a diverse set of subjects. Although it’s been many years now, I still remember highlights of that conversation: Quotations from Iqbal, recollection of glorious events from the lives of the Sahaba, and discussion of the relevance of having truth faith “Yaqin”. Not once on that day, nor ever afterwards in these fifteen years, have I ever heard anything from Zaid Hamid which is incongruent to ideas present in mainstream religious teachings of Ahl-e-Sunnah wal-jamaat. No mention of any “cult ideology”, and no reference to anyone claiming “prophethood” whatsoever. He is a firm believer in Khatme-e-Nabuwat and the finality of Prophet Muhammad(sm). In fact, Zaid Hamid is the only person whom I have met, who lives in a rented home, but still spends a handsome chunk of his earnings every year to pay a visit to the blessed cities of Hijaz-e-Muqaddas. It is nothing other than Zaid Hamid’s love and devotion to the Prophet(sm) that he has visited Masjid-e-Nabwi more than 10 times. After the first initial meeting, I have been in touch with Zaid Hamid off and on for many years, until I moved to Chaklala Scheme III becoming his neighbor and an even closer friend.
Asif Shiraz does admit in his article that he is now a neighbor of Zaid Hamid but surprisingly fails to disclose that he is an employee of BrassTacks as proclaimed by him in this Facebook message (Screen capture) whilst a little investigation also sheds some light that Mr. Asif Shiraz incidentally happens to be the Administrative domain contact for Zaid Hamid’s website Brasstacks.biz (screen capture)
It is sadly Asif Shiraz’s attempt to stand up for his boss only goes to discredit Zaid Zaman. To analyze Zaid Hamid’s Brasstacks TV show one should read the two articles published in The News by Fasi Zaka September 18th The Pakistan Report and on 25th September published a follow up titled Hate Speech – II
My concern here remains is that Zaid Zaman is appearing on public TV and continues to eloquently preach his philosophy to the public at large, had if this individual remained as private entity, then we would have had no right to question his beliefs, but once he dons the public forum, then I feel it is the right of the people to know the facts. Generally as a free society we cannot stop him from sharing his opinion with the public at large but it is our right to question his logic and any underlying issues that may tarnish his analysis as he chooses to present to the public, and in the same pretext its important to then question his association with the self proclaimed prophet a notion strictly prohibited in the religion of Islam.
The mystery surrounding this controversy seemingly gets worse with every passing day, could it be a mere propaganda, could it be his attempt to cover up his past, or does he simply choose ignore and hopefully forget, but more importantly does he still believe in the prophecy, so many questions, all shall remain a mystery until he alone chooses to address the propaganda and clarify his position once in for all

You and zaid hamid can’t fool the people by your baseless rhetoric. sine day 1 zaid hamid is denying any association with yusuf ali. even when his letter of dawn 13 august was discovered he kept on denying it and said he was not the only zaid hamid in this world. he only cursed the accusers and asked them to bring any “solid” proof. now when the ugly face of zaid has been fully exposed he is defending yusuf kazzab through this word game.
if you would have seen the court judgment you could not possible claim that the proofs were not accepted and the statements of the witnesses were false. we are 100% sure that yusuf ali claimed to be in the possession of the prophetic noor and for that very reason he called his associates as “sahabas”. the audio is very much real and verified by the court. it is a blatant lie that sattar niazi requested zaid zaman to defend yusuf ali and he only assisted the kazzab for that reason. zaid is a kazzab himself! sattar niazi’s second statement is on record in newspapers and has been reproduced in the book “fitnah-e-yusuf kazzab” in which he stated that he was misbriefed by a man called zaid zaman and yusuf kazzab’s teachings are extremely blasphemous and he should be punished. a committee of religious scholars from all schools of thought was also constituted at that time which also condemned the teaching of yusuf kazzab and demanded of the government to punish him.
zaid zaman became a pimp of yusuf kazzab since 1994 and i knew him even before that when he was living in nursery pechs karachi. even his neighbours and relatives testify this. who the hell is he trying to fool?
What nonsense is that analogy that the onus of proofs is only on the accusers. no such thing happens in law. the accusers have already provided their proofs. if you want, the complete court judgment will also be uploaded.
Ask your kazzab leader zaid zaman to bring the documents online which he showed you and let the people decide.
Even in case if we accept that yusuf kazzab never claimed to be a prophet, wouldn’t your zaid hamid clarify what were his teachings and what made him follow yusuf ali so zealously and also put all efforts for his defence in the blasphemy case. if yusuf ali was so great a sufi scholar and a murshid of zaid hamid then why doesn’t he allow us to be enlightened from his real teachings. he should do a special program in brasstacks on the “controversial” blasphemy law in pakistan and also prove that the case against his murshid was baseless and a judicial murder as he claims.
By the way, your style of expression is quite similar than that of zaid hamid and I strongly doubt that you are zaid hamid himself.

When did he reject his association with Yousaf Ali? He merely rejected being the Khalifa of Yousaf Ali and further noted that he was not mad to follow false prophets. And clearly, as I mentioned in my post, even the plaintiff said that Yousaf Ali did not claim prophethood but called himself the Khalifa of the Holy Prophet (pbuh). The interesting question here is that if Yousaf Ali was himself the Khalifa, then how can Zaid Hamid be his Khalifa?
The onus of providing adequate and reliable evidence is on the accuser and the material provided so far is grossly inadequate. If you had any doubts, it was your responsibility to research the court’s judgement, the witnesses’ statements, opinions on the trial from independent sources, views of various scholars about Yousaf Ali and Zaid Hamid, reputation of the newspaper that first brought this issue to light and the background of the people involved in this case.
The fact that people, without leaving the luxury of their homes, accused Zaid Hamid of the gravest of sins, just because they did not agree with his views, is truly shameful.

Personally, I found Zaid Hamid to be a man of principle who will not be distracted by baseless accusations but will clarify his position to anyone who is ACTUALLY INTERESTED IN THE TRUTH.
But please don’t take my word for it, if you have serious doubts contact him and set up a meeting. I just don’t understand how people can judge somebody without knowing him or trying to find out his side of the story. This is a very dark aspect of our society as we cannot tolerate dissent. The truth is obvious, alhamdulillah. Professional liars employed by Zaid Hamid to defend his ugly beliefs and pseudo-intellectualism have miserably failed to do so.
Alhamdulillah, summa alhamdulillah, Allah (SWT) gave us the courage and means to expose this fitnah that was rapidly affecting the young minds of the nation.
We did not even have a piece of paper as proof except personal information about Zaid Hamid and Yusuf Ali when we decided to go ahead using all possible means to warn the people against this fitnah. But people who were themselves “bait” with Yusuf Ali and knew Zaid Hamid personally as his top sahabi or khalifa and then reverted back to the right path contacted us and provided us with the right information, documents, correspondence and finally the audio cassette. Only last night I had a long chat on phone with one of the prosecution lawyers in Yusuf Ali case. He has promised me to provide tons of documentary proofs that were used in the case…
It was not abrupt. I personally sent an email to Zaid Hamid in September late to know whether he too has reverted and is no more a follower of Yusuf Ali’s cult beliefs. The reply I got was of absolute rejection of any association ever with Yusuf Ali and full of curses on people who accuses him of such. Zaid Hamid called Yusuf Ali an “idiot” and said he was not “mad” to follow him. I emailed him again revealing the names of my personal friends and acquaintances who are old followers of Yusuf Ali since 1990s and recently have left Karachi to settle in Islamabad on the call of Zaid Hamid. The idea is to use media, contacts in army’s high command and bureaucracy to bring about a “revolution” in the country and form a “khilafah” based on their distorted view of sufi Islam. On this Zaid Hamid refused to comment further only stating that Yusuf Ali was “misunderstood”and asked me to visit his office in Rawalpindi. That was so ridiculuous!
Now after the audio tape and the meeting of Sajjad with him it is clearly obvious to every one who did not or did not want to believe that Zaid is a “sahabi” of Yusuf Ali.
Now if the question is whether Yusuf Ali was falsely prosecuted or not we can have another debate on it. The speech of Yusuf Ali in this audio tape is only the tip of an iceberg of his distorted views on Islam. It’s rather disgusting! I have read the whole judgement and there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the case was transparent and the ruling was based more on the court statements of Yusuf Ali himself rather than the statements of the witnesses and the proofs presented. The audio cassette was verified by the court and its transcript is also printed in the detail court judgement. It is only a matter of few days when the whole the original court judgement will be scanned and uploaded on the internet for the world to see.
It’s not about any personal grudge against Zaid Hamid. Inshallah, we will resist any misguided person like Zaid Hamid, Ghamidi, Babar Chaudhry, or Amir Liaquat to prevail upon the minds of our youth and general public. We will stand against them and fight against them through all possible means.
May Allah (SWT) always guide us to the right path. Ameen.

Zaid Hamid has sent the same mail to everyone. I have copied it below. This response has been posted by Danish above and in other blogs including islamabad observer. In these Zaid. In these responses Zaid has vehemently denied following false prohets but has mentioned nothing about his association with Yousaf Ali. As far as I know he has never denied his relationship with Yousaf. I asked him point blank and he did not deny it. A lot of prominent scholars knew Yousaf Ali because he was a member of Majlis-e-Shura. So all of them are his follwers? Such immature conclusions are loathsome!

If Yousaf was not a false prophet as various scholars mentioned in their correspondences to the court, then how is association with him something bad.

I approached Zaid because I had found the audio to be disgusting as well. However, like a mentioned in my previous post, the court did not even permit it. So please dont make your decision on questionable evidence. Also note that no document of the court proceedings have been brought out so far. I have seen the court documents and they tell a completely different story. Again refer to my post above.
I had decided not to indulge in this discussion after my last post because the people who are talking ill of Zaid Hamid are not willing to tolerate dissent. I have mentioned the titles that one comment earned me in my previous post. However I decided to comment again because my statements were being twisted to depict a completely different picture.

Curse of Allah, angels and momineen be on those liars who claim to be “prophets” after Sayyadna Khatim un Nabiyyeen Muhemmed Rasul Allah (saw). Also cursed and Rajeem are those who follow such liar “prophets” and also cursed are those who accuse innocent Muslims of following such false prophets. There will be no prophet after our beloved Sayyadna, Maulana, Muhemmed Rasul Allah, Rehmat ul lil Aalimeen (saw). May Allah keep us in His serene and blessed noor and Rehma in dunya and Akhira.
May Allah be my witness in both the worlds and forgive our errors, mistakes and sins and have mercy on Ummat e Sayyadna Rasul Allah (saw). Indeed Allah is the best of Protector and most merciful on His slaves.
They have accused me of gravest of sins, called me a Kafir and Murtid, follower of false prophets, running cults, doing khiyanat in wealth of orphans and widows, working for secret services against the State, and sponsoring my own program on News1 through secret funding of dubious agencies. Also, being a fraud by pretending to be a doctor or Professor !

N. Shahrukh, (who does not expose his name or address) whom I sure I have never met in life or at least never in last 17 years since I left Karachi.
Faiyyaz Alam, whom I am also sure have never met in life or at least never in the last 17 years.
How on earth can they claim to know me ????? What are their motives, intentions and backers to try to stop our mission for Pakistan’s national security ??
What evidence they have provided? What they present as evidence is only fabricated allegation of Kufr and Khiyanat not proof !!! Each and every allegation must be backed by proof. Quran, Sunnat, Sharia, law and truth demands it. They respond allegation with more allegation. Have they asked me and seeked clarification before making their Bohtan ?? Are they willing to come and confront me face to face with proof on all bohtans ???
I wanted to avoid a global e-mailing match as this is what they want to draw us into to distract us from our real mission for Pakistan and Ummah. Everyone is most welcome to visit us in our office in Pindi and seek any further clarification if required. I will not defend myself any further. Even if you clarify our position, please maintain dignity and honor at all times and don’t make a public shouting match.
We don’t need to scoop to lower levels to defend ourselves and this Deen.
We will inshallah, not be distracted and continue our mission of protecting Pakistan against all threats, internal and external.

Just a suggestion.
Why don’t we form a small committee comprising people from this forum who have opposing points of view and meet with Zaid. Might resolve this debate once and for all.
Most of the material written against Zaid Zaman Hamid smacks of feelings of jealousy on the popularity he has gained on the marvelous analysis of national and international issues. What his personal belief is a secondary issue. I don’t think he has said any thing controversial about Islamic Faith. What was he in the past hardly matters if he has reverted to the right path now.

i don’t know about the court proceeddings against the yousuf kazzab but i do know that yousuf kazzab was a convicted criminal and sentensed to death due to his obnoxious crime.
zzh is also proved guilty as charged not in the court of law but in the court of peoples. these audio clips may not be sufficient for you but i think this is enough evidence against zzh at least for me.

Please let the muslims unite, Zaid Hamid is a human and what ever he has done in his past (which is not proved)need to be forgotten as he is now on the right track. Please helps muslims to do good for the uslims and donot try to seperate then by making such allegations. we need unity and an open mind. One thing i would like to say is that we don't have much knowledge we spread what we have just heared. In a hadis Muhammad (SAW) says (Mafhoom) do confirm what you have heared. Please pray for muslims and try to unite them.

The point is that that what so ever he was is now changed, what he is doing right know that is much more important, if he sticks to his beleif about Yousaf than that is not acceptable. And you know that many of ullama’s was with Mirza Gulam Ahmad (Qadyani) but when he declared him self as a prophet they left him the same moment and they people did munazira with them. zzh is a normal human being he could make mistakes but there should a way to rectify his mistakes. If Allah forgets his mistakes who we are who can’t forget him. one think what is the recording date of this voice clip? publishing date is not important in this context. and one humble request our Pakistani nation is provoked by these such matters we should be calm and quite while delivering our own thought otherwise we could make problems between us as well which is not good as a Muslim as well as by looking into the current situations in Muslim world. i hope you get my point.

This is an indecisive article having no firm proofs, This article publishes zaid Hamid statements mentioning his seperation from Yousif Ali but this article insists us to view him as one of Yousif Ali associates.
Zaid Zaman Hamid works for Pakistan army. It is not bad to do a job in Pakistan army. The purpose of Pakistan army is to defend the nation. But when they try to convince the nation through their “special” teachers that “army rule, direct on indirect is the only way of life”, they become ugliest to us.
Zaid tries to make the image of army, good in the eyes of people through Islamic oriented lectures, while others like MQM, ANP and PPP work on secular lines for the same agenda.
People like Zaid Zaman Hmaid are the need for establishment as they have lost the blind support of religious mind in Pakistan, which is a dangerous sign for them
Actually ISI was not aware about the affiliation of Zaid Zaman Hamid with Yousuf Kazzab. But now these facts have to be managed HOWEVER!!!

It’s also the propaganda of enemies of Muslims because they know Muslim’s history they know that Muslims are so much revolutionary Nation, they fear from the name of Jihad that’s why they named Terrorism. May be Zaid Hamid is not right but his thoughts are so much authentic, I has been searching authentic proof against Zaid Hamid for 1 months but till now I didn’t get any authentic proof.

Well i have read not all but most of of the comments section. The post itself is quite stupid and lack solid evidences. I have seen seen most of his programs and found nothing that’s against Islam or Pakistan. If u don’t agree with someone better follow this — “Let’s agree to disagree”, but by no means such stupid and senseless posts can be justified.I am not an economics student, nor do I understand very well, what economics is. But i strongly believe that there are more than two faces to the truth ;). He might seem conspiracy brother to some, but no one can deny the fact that he is at least partially right. For me most of his things do add up. To sum up, total senseless, stupid and shameful post, reflecting stupid, senseless Mulla’s emotions about someone he can’t fight with logic or whatever ;). At least be reasonable when pointing your fingers at someone.

I do watch Dr.Israr Ahmed and Western programmes about sufism like Martin Lings,have not seen any of Zaid Hamid programmes,I hope I am still muslim and acceptable as muslim.
Even people who have watched his programmes have not found anything offensive about him.
