Swat Crisis: Support the Internally Displaced Persons [IDP's] in Pakistan

Credit – Chowrangi

There is a very serious military offensive in the northern areas of Pakistan [Swat, Dir, Buner and adjacent locations] the offensive is to uproot the terrorists from the region but innocent Pakistani are suffering and are actually being displaced out fo that region migrating to safer regions like Mardan, Charsadda and Peshawar. They are fellow Pakistanis and they need our help

With an expected 500,000 people to be displaced from their residence, Swat Crisis is being termed as largest humanitarian and displacement crisis in recent times. Whether we support the military operation or not, these Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) need our help.

There could be other ways how we all can help make thier suffering a little less – share you ideas but at the same time this is an appeal to all individuals, organizations, charities and NGOs in general and nationals of Pakistan in particular, whether resident or expat, to come forward and help by extending financial, technical and moral support to hundreds of thousands, feared to be displaced in Swat Crisis. If nothing else, please spread the word.

yellO.pk has started the process of marking Aid Collection Points around the country where clothes, food, tents and donations are being collected for the displaced people of Swat, Buner and Lower Dir. We need your help to mobilise the efforts of those around you and make them aware about how they can mark the Collection Points as “Events” on the yellO map.

Go here to mark a Collection point on the map http://www.yello.pk/events/add or email idp@yello.pk with the Collection point details (location, telephone, timings, what to donate etc). Please encourage others to do the same and pass this message on to as many as you can.

To search for your nearest Collection points go here: http://www.yello.pk/tags/idp-swat/
To add your nearest collection point go here: http://www.yello.pk/events/add/

Just wished to share another website, yellO.pk, which is marking locations and information of aid organizations, camps and collection points to help the IDPs from the NWFP region. Please contribute by going to http://www.yello.pk/events/add or email idp [at] yello.pk with the Collection point details (location, telephone, timings, what to donate etc).

To lookup the collection points: http://www.yello.pk/tags/idp-swat/

Contributing and working together can help us minimize the damage that can be caused with the worsening situation.

    Danial Burki says:

@Dr Jawwad and everyone else: People living abroad can contribute directly through UNICEF or the ICRC/Pakistan Red Crescent. Both organisations have arrangements to take donations through credit cards; please do highlight your transation to let the organisations know that this money is directed for the people displaced from Malakand.

Also, before any idiots start talking about how the Red Cross and UNICEF are Zionist-Hindu-Freemason conspirators; their accounts are transparent and can be reviewed by anyone. In fact, you can even request an accounting report for every disaster area covered by them.

    dr jawwad khan says:

    thanks danial.
people irritated by the presence of international NGO’s like UNICEF or RED CROSS not becaus they are corrupt but because of their “side activities”
like gathering strategic informations(human intelligence division) and preaching christianity.
if you say that they are angels on the earth then i can only laugh on this notion.
    any way thanks for sharing.

  11. 11
    Danial Burki says:

The Red Cross and UNICEF do not preach anything. Get your facts straight before slagging off the few international organisations brave enough to still operate in our conflict zones. And as a former relief worker, I can tell you that while people become sceptical about missionary NGOs, they have not a single bad word to say about the likes of UNICEF, Save the Children or the Red Cross. In fact, IDPs prefer to live in camps supervised by these organisations.

  12. 12
    Danial Burki says:

And this thread is about the IDPs and helping them, so Dr Jawwad, I don’t want this to be a debate between us. Let’s agree to disagree and continue this somewhere else.

Also, as pointed out in the post, there are some local NGOs that have done stellar work, like Edhi, Al Khidmat and Sungi. If you’re sceptical about foreign organisations, please do donate to the local NGOs.

  13. 13
    Danial Burki says:

For people outside Pakistan, a link to the UNHCR donation site. This is the most efficient way of donation; UNHCR is there on the ground and has more experience than even the government of Pakistan in handling IDPs in that culture and that terrain.

Why can’t Pakistan Army support these people?

They are the ones who displaced them.

It will be very easy for Pakistan Army. Just give these people 10% of the money they made $$$$$$ CHA-CHING

or may be these minister can spend some of the money here instead of the strip clubs they went to:

It would be best if our political parties unite on one platform for the sake of displaced Pakistanis. However, this process of helping Pakistanis must not end here but should continue till all of the stranded Pakistanis are back in their homeland. Lets abandon are ethnic politics for our great country by providing for every single Pakistani irrespective of his cast, creed and religion!
