Op-Ed: Flogging my Sentiments

My first Op-Ed for Express Tribune Flogging my Sentiments has been published in the Saturdays The Express Tribune, talking about the ever controversial flogging video which has already been extensively debated on my blog running into a very heated debate. In the Op-ed I again take a swing accusing the Pakistan Army and our covert agencies to have leveraged this video to swing the nations sentiment allowing them a more free hand in waging the war in our northern areas of Pakistan > Flogging my Sentiments on Express Tribune

Ask kiyani if someone killed his only son through rash driving ,would he accept apology of such deadly mistake.

Nobody is asking him sir the casualties are human beings just like you.

If he is really a Muslim he must know that Islam follows the proper system of justice in which either blood for blood or eye for an eye should be implemented other wise the day Allah would streamline His system of justice, his all apology would be ineffective.

If he doesn't believe in simple philosophy of Islamic justice he can ask the pain of suffering of general masood ex core commander of Peshawar. His only son was brutally killed by identifying him through his photo in prade lane mosque incident just located to a kilometer away from giant set up of GHQ.

I think our comments have no value on the obseravtion of raheem yousuf zia on this deadly game of hide and seek .

See how correctly he correlated in this article that sacrifices of some security guards and locals are made to cover up crimes of army and US.

Flogging – real or fake By Iqbal Akhund > April 18, 2010

Karachi: What exactly is one to make of Awab Alvi’s article of April 17 titled ‘Flogging my sentiments’? What does he mean by putting key words like evidence in single quotes? Is he ignoring, perchance, the remarks by then Swat Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan who said on record that the girl was indeed flogged by members of the group?

If someone stage-managed it, as Mr Alvi claims, what would be the motive behind doing something like that? Mr Alvi suggests that the military “may have leveraged the video in order to justify the army operation against the Taliban”. Who is he kidding? Surely, the Taliban had been slaughtering the people of Swat on a daily basis, they were burning and bombing schools — did people really need to be convinced of their barbaric ways? Mr Alvi, could you please answer this?

    1. faisal Avatar

      yeah!!!!

i finally figured out who is the most trusted person in Pakistan —>Muslim Khan part of same taliban who claimed a newyork shooting killing 10+ people which fbi said was done by a local. coooooolllllll!!!!!

guys they r in a state of war and now they also want this war to be dragged either for revenge or for something else. we need to think our way out of this war with safety (if something is left in us to protect).

Flogging – real or fake (II) By Arsalan Khan > April 18, 2010

London: I am shocked to read Awab Alvi’s article where he tried to suggest that the video of the girl who was flogged in Swat last year was fake. A news anchor, when the video came out in the media last year, asked Muslim Khan for his comments and this is what he had said: “The incident is an old one… but whatever the Taliban did the punishment was correct. It shouldn’t have been done on the road but in private. The punishment given is mandatory.” He was asked if the men who held the girl as she was flogged were ‘mehram’ and he said that they were indeed her family members. A bit later he suggested that the girl should have been stoned.

He had also said that the girl’s father-in-law had been flogged as well. Never during the interview did he say – directly or indirectly – that the video was staged and that the incident fake. Why are the people of Pakistan so naïve and innocent that they don’t believe – with all the evidence at hand – that the Taliban can in fact do barbaric acts? Have not their suicide attacks killed and maimed thousands of Pakistanis? Why is it so hard for us to believe that they wouldn’t flog a girl?

    1. nota Avatar

What is most interesting is that suddenly we are being told by everyone supporting the Samar Minallah version — including Samar Minallah herself — that Muslim Khan is the most trustworthy person out there and the flag-bearer of "Truth"!

Wow! That to me is amazing!!! Maybe we ought to start putting "Hazrat" in front of Muslim Khan ๐Ÿ™‚

Well no one id denying "the Taliban can in fact do barbaric acts" and I don't know why every baboo comes up with this stupid argument. And no one is denying that they would "flog a girl" (And wonder why you guys did not make any big issue out of the much more barbaric throat-slitting videos — there were plenty around at the time); the issue is that particular flogging that was clearly STAGED (and edited, with screams added) and the video not highlighted till it was of use (it was at least 3 months old some say even 9 months or more).

Pakistanis are unanimous in condemning the suicide attacks but are not naive to be manipulated through fake videos. No person, no matter how strong can sit up straight after 34-37 lashes. Secondly, all the media citing a common source reported nothing about any father in law but an unidentified man who was also flogged and according to BBC made to marry the girl. Now, both of them have disappeared. Why don't the media bring them to front as the journalists seem to have known them quite well.

I was expecting some serious discussion on the issue, guess ET only reaches a certain class of people having little information about internal status quo and strifes of Pakistani society.

There is no history of flogging in this area in long history of this area.

Here tribes, villages and jirgas have different kind of traditions to handle such crimes of adultery and illicit relations. When taliabn started flogging stonning and beheading like scenes?it is difficult to say but it is failure of local security agencies who gave easy way to these groups to harass the public.

25000 army men were deputed since the time of Musharraf but it didnt help to stop killings of people who are against talibans, destruction of educational institute and humiliation of dead bodies of locals to harass the locals.

So our govt fully contributed in this lawlessness and escalation of such harassed environment all over the valley.Such movie has only a place of last nail of coffin in which peace of valley was buried before last assault.

You are very right of blowing schools and this continues till today. Every now and than there is an attack on a school building, which by virtue of the following excerpt from Arundhati Roy's essay seems to be a regional tactic, doesn't it?

The PLGA entered the compound, cordoned off the annexe in which the girls lived, and attacked the barracks. 55 policemen and SPOs were killed. None of the girls was hurt. (The candid SP of Dantewara had shown me his Power Point presentation with horrifying photographs of the burned, disemboweled bodies of the policemen amidst the ruins of the blown up school building. They were so macabre, it was impossible not to look away. He looked pleased at my reaction.)

"Across the Indravati river, in the area controlled by the Maoists, is the place the police call ‘Pakistan’. There the villages are empty, but the forest is full of people. Children who ought to be in school, run wild. In the lovely forest villages, the concrete school buildings have either been blown up and lie in a heap, or they’re full of policemen."

At Rani Bodili, PLGA attacked the barracks inside an education center and killed 55 policemen and SPOs. The candid SP of Dantewara had shown me his Power Point presentation with horrifying photographs of the burned, disemboweled bodies of the policemen amidst the ruins of the blown up school building. They were so macabre, it was impossible not to look away. He looked pleased at my reaction.)

"The attack on Rani Bodili caused an uproar in the country. Human Rights organizations condemned the Maoists not just for their violence, but also for being anti-education and attacking schools."

Let me just present my 'distorted' view on 'schools' being destroyed (No I am NOT defending blowing them up but I know I will be accused of it anyway ๐Ÿ™‚ ):

‘2,648 dilapidated school, college buildings in Sindh’

      From today's paper:

Landlords occupy 1,700 schools (in Sindh), says minister

      Balochistan has 3,500 Ghost Schools

(not to talk about the state of those that are not so)

1122 primary and secondary schools and 22,300 teachers were found "ghost" in Punjab and 600 schools and 9,000 teachers in Sindh.

And schools that are there, they are mostly like this:

Government Girls School No water, toilet

Government Girls School No water, toilet

Rains worsen conditions at Attock school

Hoax of parah likha Punjab led to poll defeat

      http://isamaa.tv/isamaa/images/thumbs/2010-04/201http://www.dawn.com/wps/wcm/connect/34d557004db03
If one is to blow up these school, is one blowing up anything? Is he doing something nasty or doing a service? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Also keep in mind that majority of our schools DO NOT have a building — it is just open ground — so there is nothing to blow up even if one wanted to.

My question is: So who's the bigger enemy of schools; Who has destroyed more?? Seriously!

    2. nota Avatar

Oh, I forgot NWFP so I thought I'd add that too…

ABOUT 8,000 ghost schools exist in the NWFP

My comments on original article by Dr Awab in The Express Tribune

    ————————–

I disagree with Ayesha Ijaz Khan that “Dr Awab is trying to put forth his own “liberal” credentials. Everyone admits that Taliban have defamed religion through their savage actions, this is what Dr Awab accepts and but he is not ready to accept that those who produced this flogging video have nothing to do with the exposition of savage Talibans instead they want to defame Islam in the grab of Talibani acts. Indeed, the more you ridicule Islam, the more you receive funds from the donors of NGOs who unfortunately mostly comes from the Christian world known as the West. How many protests demonstration have been held in Islamabad by the NGOs for the trial of Muslim Khan and his colleagues and their subsequent execution? In fact he has admitted the “real Video”? He has been a spokesman of Taliban who are the “enemies of Woman”? Why didn’t they follow up the Sui motto actions?

Here are some technical questions [credit, Dr Amir] regarding the Fake Video.

How can a mobile camera record such a high quality voice [note that the video shows that it has been shot from a distance of four to ten meters]? If such high quality voice can be recorded from a cell phone camera then it’s certainly“good news” for those who want to have their own production houses but can’t afford costly cameras.

There is no variation in Chand BB’s sound which proves it unnatural. No one who is beaten or being flogged would cry on the same pitch. This is called “Bhund” in language of TV production and Samar should have kept this in mind as it was very necessary for proving the fake video real.

The person gripping Chand BB’s legs is constantly looking towards the director and is not paying heed to how many time the girls has been flogged. Again a major Bhund. All players except this guy have acted well.

The Cell phone camera remains unmoved; we see mobile videos on TV channel. Have never seen such great camera work, which can be done by none other than a professional camera man.

Where has the natural sound gone? Again a major Bhund.

How come Chand BB stood straight after being flogged? She must be Hercules women and her name should be registered with the Guinness books of World Record. The cry of Chand BB has remained the same from the moment she received the first lash to her entering into the house. It is post production work. “Chand” BB has recorded this voice later but again a poor work by the poor guys.

The admission by Muslim Khan [ mind no one has questioned where has he gone after being arrested, no one has demanded his execution, Muslim Khan is from secular PPP background and has spent nearly a decade in the US] itself make it doubtful.

The insistence of Rehman Malik, who is great liar also prove that the video is fake. The society journalist must not forget that he has been denying the presence of Backwaters /Xe Services despite the fact that Americans have admitted it.

The present DPO Qazi Jameel has confirmed the fake flogging.
