BBC Urdu Interview at Karachi Press Club

A BBC Urdu Interview I had immediately after the Press Conference, shares my genuine point, but near the end of this short you would notice the charged up rally outside which was definitely worrisome

  • How many of the people protesting at that rally would have actually used Facebook? The speaker at the rally seems to be going on about the actions off our leaders etc, more rhetoric, more politicking. Is this going to turn into another example where individual political and religious leaders leverage this case to serve their own interests?

The frustrating part of such cases is that, there is nothing that would satisfy us as the aggrieved party. If you ban Facebook that does not satisfy the protesters, the protests continue. Facebook says that it will censor the offending pages, that too is not considered enough. Could anyone tell me what has to be done to rectify the situation?

Knowing what we are aggrieved about is obvious, what we need to do, or what Facebook needs to do to remedy the situation is unclear. What is a risk however is that this issue will be milked well beyond its religious significance for political point scoring.

In addition, another aspect of all that has transpired is the need for our legal system to appreciate the complexities of cyber space. Would the LHC judge who passed the order banning Facebook aware of the technical requirements or fully aware of the ramifications? Does he use Facebook and understand its role as a platform for communication?

    • Would the LHC judge who passed the order banning Facebook aware of the technical requirements or fully aware of the ramifications?

      ========================

LHC Judge couldn't even read PPC properly what to talk of solving Internet Technicalities.

    • LHC verdict I have and read – I question the fact that the evidence presented was weak, the judge did not have the knowledge and he also did not seek proper expert advise to reach to the decision he reached – it was a far reaching wide judgment which could have so easiy been localized to a set of URL's to ensure the content was not visible

I narrated the Zardari Shut-up video as discussed here http://teeth.com.pk/blog/2010/02/08/pta-blocks-za… and http://teeth.com.pk/blog/2010/01/31/zardari-tells… the next hearing is 31st I pray that the right people join up to guide the court to reach a proper judgment – as I fear if this decision becomes recorded in stone – it shall be case history and future decisions will be made on top of it, a flawed decision could lead to future problems

    • Nadir El-Edroos

The verdict did come out in haste. It does seem to set a dangerous precedent. Though at the same time if an accusation of blasphemy is attatched to anything, would any judge in Pakistan act in a different manner?

    • The petition was filed on 19th a short court order came out – asking the deputy attorney general to have a telephonic discussion with Min of IT – on the 20th the deputy attorney general reports back sharing the views of Min of IT in court [meaning third person] and hence the judgment was passed – ? all this based on a telephonic conversation – leads to the ban –

These hurried hearings were then placed on hold till the 31st but far reaching ban instruction were given with immediate effect – I hope my commenting on the facts of the court order is not contempt of court, if it please advise ill remove

    • Dear Dr Sahab,

Your opinion is not a Contempt because when decision is out then it is open for public debate. When under trial cases are being discussed openly without fail on leading TV Channels by leading anchors [despite clear instructions and order by court to not to discuss the case under trial]

    • *Not sure if it is contempt of court. Though if someone wants to accuse you of it, is it really going to matter whether or not it actually is? [Nadir]

Early in 1935, a passenger ship bound for Haifa in Palestine left the German port of Bremerhaven. Its stern bore the Hebrew letters for its name, "Tel Aviv," while a swastika banner fluttered from the mast. And although the ship was Zionist-owned, its captain was a National Socialist Party member. Many years later a traveler aboard the ship recalled this symbolic combination as a "metaphysical absurdity."1 Absurd or not, this is but one vignette from a little-known chapter of history: The wide-ranging collaboration between Zionism and Hitler's Third Reich. http://www.ihr.org/jhr/v13/v13n4p29_Weber.html

Now 16 months have been have passed and he is one of strongest President of USA but not a single step taken toward both side.

You have Any issues ? Why dont you join Awab on 31 may and try to get a “Right Decision” [Arzo]

      ===========================

      No I won’t because I don’t like Dr Awab.

    • Al

Nazia, I agree with Amir Mughal on the missing persons case. Cyril Almeida has put it nicely in his article. He is talking about what has happened in the missing persons case & what could be the route taken on the NRO case:

//"The only obvious escape route was what’s happened in the missing persons cases: the court makes a show of looking for the missing persons and earns some brownie points for doing so; the shadowy establishment hangs on to its prisoners and goes about its business as usual, occasionally turning over a prisoner it no longer has any use of."

"So it could have been that the court occasionally reprimands the government and yelps about NRO implementation, while the government occasionally would offer up a sacrificial lamb from amidst its ranks who the president would then quickly pardon. But a full-court hearing is hardly the stuff of a compromise in the making."//

The judiciary seems more interested in playing to the public gallery than anything else. The missing person is just as big an issue now as it was when Musharraf was in power.

But at that time the judiciary & the media were obsessed with it. People should now realize that it was just for political purposes. The issue is still just as important, but now the media is silent & the judiciary is dragging its feet. In fact the same journalists are singing eulogies for Kiyani although the policies he is following are not fundamentally different from those of Musharraf. There might be changes in tactics but the policy goals remain the same.

    • Al

True. The zionists actually collaborated secretly with the Nazi's because ordinary jews at the time overwhelmingly did not want to go to the backward Palestine – instead most of them wanted to go to the USA.

The zionists resorted to any means to convince the jewish population that they should emigrate to Palestine. It does make some sense as well. The Zionists were not religious jews. They were fighting for the political rights of jews not their religious rights.

    • Nazia

So you mean to say that our political leaders are like Zionist and talibans are playing the role of religious Jews ,and our army is taking the position of Nazi's and busy in terminating religious Jews of Pakistan.

    • Al

You are addressing this question to me?

    • Al

@Nazia: I don't understand your question. I am not comparing our leaders to zionists or jews & the people as religious or not. Why have you drawn this conclusion? I was just agreeing with what amir mughal had said that the zionist leadership secretly collaborated with the Nazis.

    • Its amazing how so much is accomplished over the telephone. Just go's to show that when state organs want to, they can act in a clean and efficient manner. Now, perhaps we can hold this as a precedent and demand swift action on a host of other issues.

In 2006, the Supreme Court of Pakistan banned the entire blogspot.com domain for over 18 months over a similar incident where only one blog carried blasphemous cartoons. Thousands of Pakistani bloggers were deprived of the freedom to express themselves and interact with others.

    • Teeth Maestro says: May 22, 2010 at 5:21 the judge did not have the knowledge

      ================================

Sure he didn't have the knowledge and neither do the Judge mentioned below:

For Example: If Flogging is not Islamic as LHC Judge says then what about “Milad”??? Is Milad Islamic and if it is then where it is ordered in Sunnah to hold Milad Processions and Gatherings. Without even verification the Lahore High Court says that Flogging is not True Picture of Islam [Sunnah says it is very much Islamic to flog who is guilty]. I wonder if CJ [LHC) Khawaja Mohammad Sharif does even know about the Bida'at [Innovation] of celebrating of Prophet Mohammad [PBUH]'s Milad in the light of Quran and Sunnah for which Judiciary has suddenly found a place in every decision.

Girl’s flogging not true picture of Islam, says LHC judge By Our Reporter Sunday, 12 Apr, 2009 http://www.dawn.com/wps/wcm/connect/dawn-content-

    • Thats how it is properly done: RIYADH, May 21 (Xinhua) — Saudi Arabia has blocked a controversial page of the social networking website Facebook that ridicules an Islamic ban on depicting Islam's prophet Muhammad, local Arab News reported Friday. http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/sci/2010-05

  • These Judges "Issued rather shot" decision on anything without knowing even the ABC of it e.g. Banking is Haraam in Islam [due to Interest "Riba"] and look around in Pakistan because some Mullah [Ex-Justice Taqi Usmani of Shariat Court] has made "Riba" by giving it a name of "Islamic Banking" [Another band of Mullahs of Jamia Farooqia and others have issued Fatwa against this kind of Islamic Banking]. I wonder why don't the LHC ban Internet altogether because Business of Interest is also done on Internet. The next step should be a "Court Decision" on Foreign Defence Aid [comes from the country of the Facebook], and the very next decision from LHC should be on Life Saving Drugs [comes from the country of the facebook] Pakistanis should start using Ma'ajun prepared by Quacks {loaded with Cortisone) for quick recovery, and the next decision should be against Google [because it can search "goodies"]. LHC Judge should ride a donkey and take a hike in Jungle to live ideal life.

    • Nazia

This short decision can be placed in the category of public's interest or as a matter of apprehension of arising of religious violence in illiterate and mullah followed community.

Such kind of face book move cant affect the emotions of muslims who are in touch with vastness this net exposures but it can be used as instiagting catalyst in already disturbed situation around us.

You people want to see more suicidal attacks on Muslims community and locations as showpiece of extremism to outer world?

One is not in need of technical knowledge of IT for such controversial issues which have already haunted and affected our society many times before.

Not only judiciary, a large number of Taliban sympathisers are also among the journalist community. The scene created by some such such journalists during and after Awab's press conference at KPC was really condemnable. 'The News' provided a partial coverage of the press conference and that ugly incident. I was also present on the occasion and I suspect some journalists had reported the 'twisted' version of the press conference to the outside protesting Mullahs and they also allowed some of them to enter into the press club, where unfortunate incident happened with Alvi. I also deplore the comments and thinking of our journalist community and their negative attitude towards this issue. I have still a lot of anguish after that incident.

  • arzoo

    Dr Awab

At one Point you are speaking against Lahore high Court Judgement and supporting facebook and on the other hand you are saying i dont meant tht n that

U said Facebook Page against Prophet Muhammad was "SMALL" issue it was SMALL ISSUE ?

    • Arzoo – if you have a look at my clarification, it was taken out of context, if you were there, you must have seen that i repeatedly apologized, personally to anyone who mistook my word. Is an apology, and a repeated apology not good enough, on a mere misunderstanding – you are ready to kill on the same notion.

But when you say that I said "U said Facebook Page against Prophet Muhammad was “SMALL” issue" that is quoting the wrong words. I was addressing that this "issue" was being blown out of proportion and yes I did say "this smaller issue" it was a reference to the issue and NOT the dignity of Prophet Muhammed [pbuh], uf you are a journalist, you can easily understand the nuisances of the word and reference. All said, the journalists may have been irked, but with my apology in a way understood, but what was surprising someone deliberately went outside and irked the protestors to kill and then would such a misunderstanding have been worth of murder in the name of defending our prophet [pbun] that is what befuddles me. Who so ever started labeling me a kaafir, must seriously understand the repercussions of such a word.

I was speaking against a wrong judgment, and I was NOT in contempt of court to cast my opinion after the order has been passed, you can be in contempt of court when the trial is underway – Arzoo do take a moment and find and read the judgement – the seeked now expert advise on what is the best technical way to block these cartoons – it as an over teh phone conversation with the deputy attorney general – who then presented the issue to the judge, judge not being satisfied with the explanation, said to call PTA on teh 31st until then he gave a sweeping ban – I contest how this issue was so lightly handled – one day if someone wants to ban emails merely because he received a blasphemous email – Judge might end up putting a sweeping ban on the entire email – my dispute is not about the blasphemous cartoons, it is about why LHC/PTA imposed such a ban

With due respect, I hope this clarification helps clear your misunderstandings, if you have any – I can email you my number and we can talk if I am wrong please please show me the light, else lets not murder each other on a misunderstanding of words being taken out of context – is that a fair deal

  • arzoo

    1) I question the fact that the evidence presented was weak

  • Nazia

    A1

The case of missing persons have many dimensions.

Here are some people who actually worked for intelligence agencies and there are strong chances that they have been killed to end all kind of eyewitnesses of jihad war.

There are some people were not in mood of terminating links with jihadis and they somehow helped Pak army during musahrf regime in creating more severe conditions in tribal areas to focus US attraction toward our side and this way provided strong common interests for both US and Pak army.

There are large numbers of people who were removed from scenes using the services of intelligence groups under influential officers on the basis of personal enmity of strong people or ruling class of Pakistan.

There is also group of missing people who traveled other countries through fake documents and wrong means and now detained in other countries. It is incompetence and irrelevancy of officers of foreign offices to go and pursue their cases.

So corrupt officers have mingled all cases to hide the crimes of senior officers specialy in military uniform as might is right rule is still prevailing in all departments of state.

If judiciary takes action of against the decision of 3 Nov.

    It looks you judical hiccups.

if it stand against NRO which is root cause of present anarchy in state matters , then it looks you game of revenge.

If judiciary listens the case of missing people it seems you like political tricks.

If judges try to stand against high prices of fuel , it looks you for cheap publicity.

if Judges try to reduce tension of religious conflict by banning FB, it is not acceptable to net lovers.

If judiciary tries to grab hamesh and his cronies then it seems you a judicial adventure.

So what should they do ?kindly you and mughal sit together and give them manual of SOPs of judiciary or list of priority jobs to poor judges that would satisfy your uneasiness toward acts of judiciary.

Would you deny the fact that in this state of lawlessness these judges are the only mobile and active state representatives in the line of duty for public affairs.

Teeth: In the video when the interviewer asked you a question that isn't your stance contradictory where on the one hand you are campaigning for freedom of expression & on the other hand saying that just the said page should be banned, your answer was somewhat unclear – you seem to be placing more importance on the constitution of Pakistan & you say because it says so, the ban on anything objectionable to Islam is understandable.

I think your point should have been that as Muslims this derogatory language against our Prophet (PBUH) is unacceptable to us as a society. The constitution of Pakistan is not sacred. The Quran & Hadith & respect for our Prophet (PBUH) IS.
