Drug Nandrolone Haunts PCB

Nandrolone is the drug which has been found in the urine samples taken from Shoaib Akhtar and Mohd Asif. Nandrolone is similar to testosterone which is also banned by the International Olympic Committee if found in alarming quantity (Floyd Landis). Nandrolone is used my athletes as performance enhancing drug, as it contributes to increases in muscle mass and also produces the same side-effects, like overly aggressive behaviour, as testosterone.

Athletes who have been caught have often cited the use of Creatine and the consumption of protein shakes as the reason for positive tests. An Aberdeen University study suggests that they may have a point. According to that, consumption of dietary supplements in conjunction with heavy physical training can result in the athlete returning a positive test for Nandrolone. As with many drugs, including THG that was involved in the infamous BALCO case, our knowledge is far from comprehensive. And as long as that remains the case, the protestations of innocence from those caught may just have a ring of truth to them. – Cricinfo

The permissible limits of Nandrolone should be well below the 2 nanogram limit which is normally found in the human body, anything above this limit can be classified as substance abuse.

Pak Spin Cricinfo Blog reports “We don’t yet know the extent of the problem but Shane Warne ended up with a one-year ban when he got into trouble. A one-year ban would be a major setback for Asif and he might never recover though you would hope he would. A one-year ban for Shoaib would be as good as the end of his career.”

My take on this developing story: It appears that Bob Woolmer was responsible for having administered these test, I think its a great move, and I fully support his decision as I am sure in the coming days Woolmer would be taken to the cleaners on this point. Pending the re-test confirmation I feel its important to root out cheaters entirely with no exception,

shoaib’s medical expert says that he was innocent. I do think that shoaib wouldn’t do any such stupid thing at this stage of his career.

Isn’t it 2 year ban as per ICC revised rules … it was 1 year in 2003 in times of shane warne banning …. Well shoaib akhtar is anyways looking forward to “modelling career” with his new looks … It’s Asif whose banning will surely affect pakistan … at this hour when we are struggling with Bowlers too … and I heard Rana Naveed may have another dope test too … !

You doubt the public too much. Why would Woolmer be taken to the cleaners? He was right in administering a drug test. And no one will say anything to him. That’s the least of our worries…

In any case, word is still filtering in about the incident. Only time will tell. I looked up Nandrolone. Seems like testing for this is also very controversial. Someone with a high intake of proteins, like athletes recovering from injury, also tend to have higher proportions of steroids.
