This news item appeared in the ‘Such Gup’ section of The Friday Times, which is known to carry the small tidbit stories that circulate amogst the movers and shakers of Pakistani politics.
A fly on the wall of the real PMs [Pervaiz Musharraf] camp office that fateful day reports that the “suspended? Chief Justice may have precipitated his detention and subsequent maltreatment by a simple act of attempted pre-emption. The fly reports that when the real PM read out the riot act to the CJ and asked him to throw in the towel, he refused pointblank. The real PM then apparently laid down the law, such as it is poor thing, and declared that the Supreme Judicial Council would deal with the matter appropriately. Thereupon, the fly on the wall says, the CJ reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his cell phone. “Oh no you don’t? he is reported to have said, or words to that effect, “Ill slap a stay order on proceedings!?
All hell then broke loose, says the fly, with the real PM and his aides reaching for the phone and prizing it out of the CJs clammy hands. “How the hell did he manage to bring his cell phone in? muttered the aides as they divested the CJ of his implement. Having taken it off him, they then “invited the CJ to remain in the room? for a few hours while they moved to an ante room to sort out the whole sorry mess. Interestingly, says the fly, “they? didn’t have a plan B ie no fallback position in case he refused to resign. So, afraid of the CJ slapping a stay on things, it was some time before he was allowed to go home. Even so, because the real PMs aides were on tenterhooks, the CJs shoddy treatment continued and he was cut off from the world until the die was well and truly cast.
These ‘fly on the wall’ story have generally true and I suspect this rumor to be quite on the money seen specially in light of the utter chaos leading to a two day house arrest goes to prove that there was no apparent ‘Plan B’ & GHQ wanted to pressurize him into submission. Hence an important piece of tidbit to add into our understanding of the huge fiasco
