Don’t Give Up – Pakistan

I would like to share with you this music video titled Don’t Give Up sung by Willie Nelson & Sinead O’Connor (originally sung by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush) which was sent to me by Salman Ahmed of Junoon fame. This powerful song caries a message of hope maybe to inspire those passionate Pakistanis who may have been feeling a little under-the-weather at not having altered much, despite our efforts to resist the unfair political chaos which has befallen our country.

Salman sends this link and simply says Don’t Give Up…. Pakistan (on this thanksgiving, this song is for you)

I’m speechless, Pakistanis lets not give up on our country, after all its our country, Pakistan Humara Hai

In this proud land we grew up strong
We were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail

No fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I’ve changed my face, I’ve changed my name
But no one wants you when you lose

Don’t give up ‘cos you have friends
Don’t give up you’re not beaten yet
Don’t give up
I know you can make it good

Though I saw it all around
I never thought that I could be affected
I thought that we would be the last to go
It is so strange the way things turn

Don’t give up you still have us
Don’t give up we don’t need much of anything
Don’t give up
‘Cause somewhere there’s a place
There’s a place where we belong

‘Got to walk out of here
I can’t take anymore
I’m gonna stand on that bridge
Keep my eyes down below
Whatever may come
And whatever may go
That river’s flowing
That river’s flowing

Moved on to another town
Tried hard to settle down
For every job, so many men
So many men no-one needs

Don’t give up ’cause you have friends
Don’t give up now we’re proud of who you are
Don’t give up you know it’s never been easy
Don’t give up
‘Cause I believe there’s a place
There’s a place where we belong

“You guys rock”, PK-SMS Reporter wrote in her last message on the day of the journalists demo in which they all volunteered to be arrested when the police arrested the first 4 – and after the police had to release them all after a few hours.

You guys – Pakistani human rights activists, students, journalists, lawyers – all rock and your strength is your unity. Not in the sense of “faire bloc” as traditional political parties do – blocks are static and have fault lines.

Yours is a well-knit and dynamic unity, the unity of the network, and of the network of networks. Not in the internet sense – well, that too, of course, but that’s instrumental. You are so efficient in using it because what unites you is human values and rights as a lived given. And as these are given, you can assess and plan concretely, realistically, whether in normal circumstances or in a crisis.

So errors, which can be literally lethal (the kids who died in a shoot-out between PPP militants and the police) in a block strategy, you learn from. You can acknowledge tiredness, moments of discouragement, instead of artificially “putting up a brave front”. Because your values are given and can’t be harmed.

You rock, guys, and when the martial law crisis is over thanks to you, you are going to be indispensible in imagining and making the new democracy. Maybe you won’t all be in Parliament making laws directly, but lawmakers will need you.

May I share another song with you? Allama Iqbal’s Lab pe aati hai dua. It’s the song heard in the last minutes of Geo TV’s farewell broadcast before then Nov. 16 shutdown, but in a subtitled version thoughtfully offered to us ignoramuses who don’t know Urdu by one of you, Atif Abdul-Rahman, in Martial Law – What can we do?. Since then, Geo has started broadcasting again, without concessions.
