My fellow Pakistanis,
I am an a poet and artist who left for exile in the eighties after my incorruptible father’s career was destroyed under the rule of our last military dictator, Zia ul Haq. The present events have stirred me to return to Urdu Shairi after a long hiatus. Although I grew up steeped in the shairi of such greats as Faiz this new movement deserves its own anthem. The first verse is dedicated to the women of Pakistan, although if you notice I have written the whole poem in the “feminine tense” The second verse refers to the bloggers movement. Hope you can read my Roman!.

Shama hi woh musalsal mounnas hai
Jo har andherey taley jalti hai
Yeh fasal e darakshan beyshumar
Chashm e Loh o qalam se phalti hai
Ae neend khae musafir ab to jaag
Roshni teri aakhein malti hai
Woh aag jis pey tum ney lathiyan barsiyei
Ab har koocha e jigar machalti hai
Chaltey chal terey qadmon ki dhool woh aandhi hai
Jis sey zulm ki saltanat khatakti hai
Ae hamwatan teri awaaz meri awaaz se mil jaey
To yeh goonjh har takht ko palati hai
Sar utha ae mazloom yeh mehek laala o gul seh behter hai
Teri galiyon mein aaj azadi ki hawa chalti hai.

Wah wah wah, Irshad Irshad — well done Sophia 😉
Teri galiyon mein aaj azadi ki hawa chalti hai
This line made me cry…
Adab Adab I wrote this exactly as it came to me in about ten minutes without any revisions. Now as I look at it I want to add a shair that basically reflects the urgency of the moment
Cheen lay is lamhay ko waqt kay gariban se
Chooti to yeh ghari wapis nahin palati hai
and amend the previous shair as follows
Ae hamwatan teri awaaz meri awaaz se milay
To yeh goonjh har takht ko ulati hai

had a tough time reading it in roman (even though i write in roman too)
very nice. I salute your father for standing up to Zia (munafiqul momineen)
yes your poetry is very appropriate. I was growing up in Zia era and I am also an eyewitness to that dark era of Zia and jamiat etc. There has to be life after this other wise the sacrifices made by honest people
Urdu Poetry has given me lot of hope during current dark days. Even today politicians are cess pool and stinking even more
ya allah is mulk pey raham kar (ameen)
