Looking at how this trial has been conducted so far, there is very little hope that Dr. Aafia Siddiqui will be released even on December 17.
To begin with, she was remanded on an accusation which wouldn’t have been taken seriously by any self-respecting court of law. That whole story of her picking up an M4 rifle and firing two rounds at random was illogical. Yet, it was theonly charge brought against her. On such an implausible charge she was remanded without bail!
A pattern has become obvious by now: whatever could be the farthest from justice and common sense has been happening at every turn. Since it is rational and would make sense that having been announced mentally unfit a month ago, Aafia should be released on December 17, therefore it should be the least expected.
Instead, anything “unexpected” can happen – any violation of decency, justice and common sense (after all, this is a case regarding which the US envoy to Pakistan didn’t flinch from making a very misleading public statement)!

I doubt it… There have been a number of judicial games… accused were coerced into plea bargaining and then subjected to maximum punishment – longer than what the actual crime (if proven) would have had. She is already broken – perhaps wants to get over with it and therefore ripe for plea bargaining trap..
If she did any thing wrong then she must be punished – otherwise those who handed her over need to face the justice as well…

In today’s Dawn (http://dawn.com/2008/12/12/letted.htm) letters to the editor,, Aafia’s husband, who stayed quiet this far, has talked about their children.
if she has done “anything” wrong then she should be punished? let’s recheck that statement. A person is supposed to be punished ONLY for charges brought against her or him in a court of law. The only charge brought against Aafia is that stupid story of M4 rifle. No other charge was brought up! This is a case of trial by media – reminiscent of trial by fire conducted in primitive societies.
It is amazing what Aafia’s husband is saying now – the whole case against her was based on his false reporting – a vindictive husband who got his wife in trouble because of marital problems. I read his letter and was surprised to see the absence of any remorse or regrets… Moral of the story – do not get your highly educated and professionally successful daughters to marry jerks for the sake of marriage.
This guy unfortunately, epitomizes the psyche of Pakistani men, I am a man myself so I know. They must always be taken care of, he is coming out now, when there is a possibility that Aafia maybe released. And as pointed out in other comments here that he expressed no concern about the current conditions his ex-wife is in. Who is going to help him find his children? It seems to me that he is more interested in causing harm to Aafia’s mother and sister in Karachi than to find his kids. I am beginning to wonder if he is the one who sold her in the first place to settle the family feud.
What a stupid, filthy human being!
1) Dr Aafia was kept in complete isolation from April 2003 till early 2007 at the notorious Bagram jail of the Americans north of Kabul. During this period she was subjected to the worst-possible physical and mental torture. Her late night screams have been heard and reported in the media by a number of prisoners who were kept there during that period (Moazzam Beg etc). During this very period her face was deformed and altered through plastic surgery. She was forced to have a new identity and a new name-again for unknown reasons.
2) Dr Aafia is understood to have been shifted from Bagram jail to the private jail of American Embassy in Islamabad in mid 2007 and kept in one of the prisons there.
From American embassy she is understood to have been shifted to the control of ISI, Islamabad and remained in their custody for sometime.
3)Towards the end of 2007 Dr Aafia was handed over by ISI to FIA Lahore.
From time to time she was allowed to go outside her FIA jail in a black ‘burqa’ with the condition to arrange to proceed to Afghanistan at her own. The Pakistani agencies were also kind enough to issue Dr Aafia a fake national identity card (NIC) with a photo of her changed face but with a new name (possibly Saliha) and with a fake address of Karachi. According to the pre-set plan of FBI / FIA the poor and well trapped Aafia arrived in Kabul from Lahore in the second week of July 2008 apparently with the assistance of FBI / FIA agents. The FBI agent Mrs Mehtab Sayed (a Pakistani) disguised as Taliban agent at Kabul promised Dr Aafia the delivery of Master Muhammad Ahmed to her at …..

5) From the pigeonhole brief from her jail cell (in New York) Aafia’s lawyer found out that the older 12-years boy was incarcerated in Bagram.

Well, the thing is, the Aafia Siddiqui case may be sad (and it is, especially her children), but the reality is that it has been very successfully used by JI’s propaganda machine. So the people who continue bringing up the Aafia Siddiqui story should realize that their support is being used by JI to further its own agenda. If you are comfortable with JI’s agenda, that’s fine. But if you’re not, you should think about what your continuous support for Aafia Siddiqui means.
It’s unfortunate, but that’s how it seems to be. We’re all pawns 🙁

Btw, US Courts are in a process of evaluating her fitness to stand the trail The evidence against her involvement could only be put before the judge & the jury – once the court gives a decision on her fitness.

Dr. Aafia’s next hearing is on the 26th of Feb 09. The judge has ordered the Govt to choose two psychiatrists and Defense to choose their own two so as to evaluate Afiya Siddiqui’s mental health until her next hearing after which the judge will conclude whether she is fit to stand for trial.
Dr. Aafia’s attorney advised everyone to send her (Dr. Aafia) post cards, letters with words of encouragement etc. (she said if you are Muslim then do it anonymously because you don’t want FBI come knocking on your door)
