Anti-Corruption Day, Blagojevich and Zardari

It seems that corrupt politicians such as Pakistan’s President Zardari, widely known as Mr. Ten Percent, instead get rewarded with high offices, with the assistance of amnesties arranged by the United States. It is what President Bush often describes as “soft bigotry of low expectations” when the West pushes for the pardon of corrupt politicians in countries such as Pakistan, in clear violation of the UN Conventions against Corruption. What is worse, such policies of condoning corruption are pursued in the name of promoting democracy in the third world.  Read More at Haq’s Musings Blog

It sounds great what you wrote if debated based on what the media wrote. In reality, its business as usual at the Governor’s office. Former Gov. George Ryan jailed on corruption charges in 2007, and looks like Mr Bush is going to Pardon him before he leaves office. So now, what is the difference?

    Khurram,
The difference is that Ryan has been convicted and jailed for corruption. Bush’s pardon, if it does happen, will not erase that official record. In fact, Ryan’s political career has ended. Now, he can never be elected to public office again, much less the office of the president. Similar fate was accorded Dan Rostenkowski, the powerful chairman of the appropriations committee in the US Congress in the 90s.

The sad part is that Chicago politicians like Blagojevich have learned nothing from Ryan’s or Rostenkowski’s prosecution and conviction. Chicago politics remains as corrupt as ever, even threatening to taint Obama and his cohorts.
