Who’s actually running Pakistan? The Americans or Pakistanis?

Anne Patterson US ambassador to PakistanAmmar Faheem lashes out without mincing any words US Ambassador Patterson MUST be EXPELLED which comes in response to Anne Patterson’s statment regarding the Quetta Shura yesterday “You cannot tolerate vipers in your bosom without getting bitten our concern is whether Pakistan really controls its territory. There are people who do not threaten Pakistan but who are extremely important to us.’’ Signifying quite openly that America is gearing up for an offensive in Quetta. EXCUSE ME….. isn’t she a foreign diplomat issuing aggressive offensive orders against the state of Pakistan? Whatever happened to our Army?

On the other hand the very same day Rehman Malik, Pakistan’s Minister of Interior, who should have all knowledge of the in’s-n-out’s about our country is on record to have said “Over and again this topic has been coming up. But according to us the Quetta shura does not exist in Quetta” —- goodness gracious, it surprising that even our top notch minister has no clue whats up in Quetta, let alone prepare a for it

The bigger question that does send a shudder down our spine, is WHO IS ACTUALLY RUNNING THIS COUNTRY? for sometime it has slowly been evident that we are being manipulated by the Americans – Isn’t it normal diplomatic norms that a foreign diplomat be required by law to ‘not interfere’ with the affairs of the country, shouldn’t a diplomat be required to report any security issues regarding the host country immediately to the country heads, failing which it then becomes a security issue which the host country has the prerogative to politely declare such persons as persona non-grata and escort them out.

My position on the present US military buildup in Pakistan remains he same, they MUST reduce their thousand strong marine force and other peripheral extra-military personal to a bare minimum, as need to protect the US Embassy. We cannot, will not and should not, tolerate the creation of yet another rogue militia in Pakistan, we have enough free-roaming armed foreign militia, as it is, that we do not need to welcome another group to help run the affairs of our country, we must aim to resurrect ourselves out of this gloomy terrorism mafia by helping to reduce this military buildup, not increase it.

Anne Patterson quite perfectly says “You cannot tolerate vipers in your bosom without getting bitten” Seriously – Look who’s talking?

As any self respecting Pakistani would say – We appeal to our Ministry of Interior to please declare US Ambassador Ms Anne Paterson persona non-grata and escort her out of the country, it is, the only right thing to do

    Bravo Ammar !!!

At least someone has the guts to speak up how a common Pakistani feels.

To hell with long term plannings and strategic gains.

We do not want to be friends with America.

    China does us fine.

    No to USA.

They created the MESS in Afghanistan in the first place. They should sit in Russia and resolve Afghanistan.

    ——–

Any way Afghanistan is resolved USA should pack their bags and leave …..try their weapons in their own deserts.

    ——-

If Iran can survive the sanctions,if Malaysia can progress without US aid why do we need USA to resolve anything.

    Afghanistan is impossible.

If USA carries out a Drone Attack on Quetta ,it means USA is directly attacking the civilians in Pakistan.

In other words Pakistan is under attack from USA.

How would we react if it was India?

People should react in the same way.

People of Quetta are civillians, are our citizens and have a right to a safe life.

No country should ever be allowed to invade and threaten our citizens.

USA must leave our territory to us.

If we look at the track record of Pakistan. I think our government is not powerful enough to kick out her but the US-ambassador can kick out any one from Pakistan (President or PM or anyone).

BUT at least one can appeal to register a voice.

Harvard Law School is not just an Ordinary Pakistani College e.g. Sirajud Dawla College Liaquatabad. Harvard Law School has produced numerous leaders in American law and politics, including many more U.S. Supreme Court justices and U.S. Senators than any other law school. I wonder why didn't any of the Prominent American Member from the same Harvard Law School raise any voice against the ongoing violation of Pakistan's Air Space by their country i.e. USA and that too because they had invited our CJ for offerring him Award of Harvard Law School Medal of Freedom. The Harvard Law School [as per my poor memory] didn't ever lodge any protest against the Violation of International Law by the USA which they have been doing since long. So much for the respect for the Law by Harvard Law School.

I wonder, did Mr Samad Khurram or any other born again Ram Jeth Malanis in Harvard Law School even try to meet the Former Law Graduates of Harvard Law School [and believe me these Former Graduates are the backbone of American Politics and Establishment and many amongst them are in US Central Intelligence Agency as well] to lodge even a peaceful protest against US Forces' daily violation of Pakistan's Airspace and these violation also culminates in many innocent deaths in NWFP's Tribal Belt.

It's our enlightened moderate men in uniform and the harbingers of "democracy is the best revenge". But the real guilty party is us heartless and shameless AWAAAAAAM who're ready to die for a packet of sugar instead of dying fighting for honour and rigt. I'm not demeaning any segment of the society but this is the truth. Every Pakistani whether rich or poor (including you and me) is selfish to the hilt and ready to sell his/her soul for a paltry price. I seethe with anger when I see Pakistani expats bad mouthing Pakistan in front of their Western Audience. Vice is in every society and civilization. Instead of whining and complaining of all the ills in Pakistan, can't we just for God's sake fix problems ourselves? Is it asking for too much? Have a look at this video, how I wish I were a citizen of the country of the journalist in the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpF7k7lqpaQ. In a report sent to high-ups seeking advice, the city circle police said that Syed Mohsin Raza Bokhari, 35, son of a retired Pakistan army major and related to a senator, alleged that over a dozen American security personnel tried to abduct him at gunpoint after he defied their honking to give them way to cross Ayub Chowk near Marriott Hotel on September 19. Soon over a dozen foreigners reached the scene and forcibly took away Raza’s CNIC card and tried to bundle him into the jeep.

However, police also arrived in the meantime and did not allow the foreigners to hold Raza or take him to their base, said the uncle. But that did not prevent the same group of foreigners to intercept him again in Sector F-8 the very next day. They just photographed him and then fled the scene.

Ayub Khan frustrated with slow pace of negotiations with US during his visit to Washington went to Henry Byroad’s office and told him, ‘I didn’t come here to look at barracks. Our army can be your army if you want us. But let’s make a decision’.

In July 1959, Pakistan agreed for establishment of US base near Peshawar to be operated by US officials. General Khalid M. Arif while commenting on U-2 incident (U-2 was a US spy plane operating from Badaber base near Peshawar. It was shot down by Soviet SA-2 missile and its pilot Gary Powers was captured. The incident severely compromised Pakistan security and brought the Soviet ire on Pakistan. Soviets paid back Pakistan within a decade during East Pakistan crisis) states that, ‘Pakistan felt deceived because the US had kept her in the dark about such clandestine spy operations launched from Pakistan’s territory’.Statements like these from such highly placed officers don’t speak well for Pakistan.

Ayub Khan was fully aware of the operations. He was in London at the time of U-2 incident. When the CIA station chief gave Ayub the news, he shrugged his shoulders and said that he had expected this would happen at some point. In 50s there was increasing number of Pakistani officers who got training in United States. The military doctrine shifted from British to American. Fazal Muqeem points to the change of thought process of officer corps. “Such healthy and friendly contacts were bound to have a decisive influence on the ideas of the officer corps. They soon made their impact on the thinking of Pakistani commanders and staff. In the re-organization of the army, American ideas influenced the planners in a number of ways”.The influence was not limited to the knowledge of new weaponry and defence strategy and tactics. According to Colonel Jordan, the purpose of training of officers in US was not only to train them in particular fields but also to groom them for non-military activities (leadership, management and economics). In addition, MAAG officers were in agreement that the off-shore trained officer is more receptive to continued military advice and suggestions than his colleagues”.It is interesting to note that officers from different countries (Asia, Africa, Latin and South America) trained in US quite confident of their newly acquired skills took power in their own countries.

    "QUOTE"

Excerpts from a Diplomatic Gathering in 80s

""The Soviet Foreign Minister, Gromyko, speaking in New Delhi on February 12, 1980 had warned that, "If Pakistan continues to serve as a puppet of imperialism in the future; it will jeopardize its existence and its integrity as an independent state." The United States, too, could in certain circumstances accept the dismemberment of Pakistan as it did in 1971. Henry Kissinger, the US Secretary of State during President Nixon's administration, had said: "In my conversation with Ambassador Jha I reiterated my constant theme that we considered Indian and American long term interests as congruent …. I emphasized that the United States did not insist that East Bengal remain part of Pakistan. On the contrary, we accepted autonomy as inevitable and independence as possible. A war was senseless; Bangladesh would come into being by the spring of 1972 if present procedures were given a chance. We differed over method, not aim."On October 7, I told WSAG meeting that if India would accept an evolutionary process, it would achieve most of its objectives with our assistance. If they would co-operate with us we could work out 90 per cent of their problems, like releasing Mujib or attaining some degree of autonomy for Bangladesh, and these steps would lead eventually to their getting it all." With the return of a Republican administration and keeping United States global interests in mind, it would be prudent to assume that should the US interests in the future be better served by sacrificing Pakistan or a part of it, Henry Kissinger's successors would not hesitate to do so. Pakistan must, therefore, strive to keep itself together by weakening those forces that are pulling it apart and this cannot be done by force of arms. The use of strong arm methods has shown that the situation did not, to say the least, improve."

Extremely interesting posts by Amir Mughal.

The crises of leadership in Pakistan is deep.

One thing I would like to point out to further the discussion when these "appointed leaders" of USA get real power ,they are ambushed.

Like Zia,with him we lost master minds handling Afghanistan.

    So a vaccum was created.

Like Benazir ,a vaccum is created.

    Like Bhutto …….

Why there are no people to fill this vaccum because these political parties are non-democratic.

People are frustrated, angry at PPP and Zaradari but would they react?

Would opposition Nawaz challenge the government?

    Would Army step in?

None of the scenarios seem to be taking place.

A common person like five people die in the ques for Atta…

Mass protest in Faisalabad last year against the load shedding and no work for the poor…..

Yet none of this gains momentum…….

In Pakistan there is no root for people struggle and strife…

Everything begins at the Top and finishes there.

Unless it is people who bring in the changes ,there would be no change in Pakiatan.

There are many gloomy stories about Pakistan today in the media……

I see it only as management crises….

So why people choose PPP even after Bangla Desh???

Why the poorest vote for RICH and POSH NAwaz,Why they vote for feudal Benazir?

Electing Zardari and putting up with it means ,we as a Nation have no political understanding of the Civil and political values.

It is very easy to blame on Army Genrals or Feudal and Industrialists ……But the basic question is again of values……

We appreciate people with fake values……who speak good English…..who wear expensive clothes……

who have big car ……and who have power to abuse us.

    ——–

I am not an MQM supporter but surprisingly only Altaf Hussain takes pride in following his dress code and speaking in his language.Without flashing expensive cars

    —–

Imran Kahn is a classic example though of being humble and polite,he infact tries to play down on his charisma BUT would people of Pakistan follow him.

    —–

our intellectual scene (if there is one)is full of psuedo intellectuals.

———–converstaion in political shows is regarding USA ,Afghanistan ,Ministers and their actions ……

    not about common man……

    ——

We need to focus on the common man….when the common man begs and not demand his rights what can we do.

    ——–

Justice does not lies with Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry….Justice lies within the understanding of the common person that Judges, police ,lawyers, politicians and beaurucrate are sitting o serve my purpose……

Are they good value for my vote….

    ——

Our focus is wrong …….FOCUS should be people…..us,not USA.

How we react and force our governments to act…….

Can USA handle Pakistani people marching in the streets against their occupation …….NO.

Than this is what our leaderhsip is paid for or kept in position to do.

See …it is People of Pakistan, the media ,the politicians who want to keep people depoliticised.

You decide after reading this as to what should we do:

ISI Chief Ahmed Shuja Pasha meets CIA director Updated at: 2130 PST, Thursday, October 01, 2009

    http://thenews.jang.com.pk/updates.asp?id=87992

WASHINGTON: ISI Chief Lt. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha, who is presently on US trip, met with high security officials including CIA director, Leon Panetta and President Barack Obama's national security advisor, Gen. James L. Jones. According to sources, matters relating to Pakistan and prevailing security situation in the region came under discussion during the above meetings. ISI Chief Lt. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha has been on official visit to US for the last one week.

    LETS GO BACK TO HISTORY:

    AFTER 9/11.

In the afternoon, Mahmood was invited to CIA headquarters at Langley, Virginia, where he told George Tenet, the CIA director, that in his view Mullah Omar, the Taliban chief, was a religious man with humanitarian instincts and not a man of violence! This was a bit difficult for the CIA officials to digest and rightly so as the Taliban’s track record, especially in the realm of human rights, was no secret. General Mahmood was told politely but firmly that Mullah Omar and the Taliban would have to face US Military might if Osama Bin Laden along with other Al-Qaeda leaders were not handed over without delay. To send the message across clearly, Richard Armitage held a second meeting with Mahmood the same day, informing him that he would soon be handed specific American demands, to which Mahmood reiterated that Pakistan would cooperate. {Bush at War by Bob Woodward, published by Simon & Schuster, 2002, New York}, p 32. {Pakistan: Eye of the Storm by Owen Bennett Jones, published by New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 2002}, p. 2.

General Mahmood on September 13, 2001, was handed a formal list of the US demands by Mr. Armitage and was asked to convey these to Musharraf and was also duly informed, for the sake of emphasis, that these were “not negotiable.” Colin Powell, Richard Armitage, and the assisstant secretary of state, Christina Rocca, had drafted the list in the shape of a “non-paper”. It categorically asked Pakistan:

Stop Al-Qaeda operatives coming from Afghanistan to Pakistan, intercept arms shipments through Pakistan, and end ALL logistical support for Osama Bin Laden.

Give blanket overflight and landing rights to US aircraft.

Give the US access to Pakistani Naval and Air Bases and to the border areas betweeen Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Turn over all the intelligence and immigration information.

Condemn the September 11 attacks and curb all domestic expressions of support for terrorism.

Cut off all shipments of fuel to the Talibans, and stop Pakistani volunteers from going into Afghanistan to join the Taliban. Note that, should the evidence strongly implicate Osama Bin Laden and the Al-Qaeda Network in Afghanistan, and should the Taliban continue to harbour him and his accomplices, Pakistan will break diplomatic relations with the Taliban regime, end support for the Taliban, and assist the US in the aforementioned ways to destroy Osama and his network.

    Having gone through the list, Mahmood declared that he was quite clear on the subject and that “he knew how the President thought, and the President would accept these points.” {Bush at War by Bob Woodward, published by Simon & Schuster, 2002, New York}, p 58-59. Interview: Richard Armitage, “Campaign Against Terror,” PBS (Frontline), April 19, 2002}

Mahmood then faxed the document to Musharraf. While the latter was going through it and in the process of weighing the pros and cons of each demand, his aide de camp that Colin Powell was on the line. Musharraf liked and respected Powell, and the conversation was not going to be a problem. He told him that he understood and appreciated the US position, but he would respond to the US demands after having discussed these with his associates. Powell was far too polite to remind him that he in fact was the government, but did inform him that his General in Washington had already assured them that these demands would be acceptable to the government of Pakistan. {Pakistan’s Drift into Extremism : Allah, the Army, and America’s War on Terror by Hassan Abbas, published by An East Gate Book , M.E. Sharpe Armonk, New York. London, England.}.

US is just an ally of Pakistan in war on terror, and supporting Pakistan on economic end or in other fields. It does not mean we have sold our country. Govt of Pakistan is striving for its national interests not promoting US. Zardari has negated af-Pak policy. Zardari did not attend the speech of Mr. Obama. Zardari has signed Iran gas pipe line plan. Zardari did not compromise over our atomic assets. He refused to hand over Dr. AQ khan to US. Govt is very much vigilant towards our national interests and security of Pakistan. Govt of Pakistan itself is running state affairs; don’t detract people by such stupid questions.
