A President and A Prime Minister for Sale!

By Omar Javaid, Sr. Editor, Critic Magazine

Sounds familiar? I won’t bias you rather will try to be as neutral as possible. I know a few names pop in your mind when you read the title. Top of which would be … cough, cough … this makes me cough while typing, not strange though!

Since a couple of days I felt like writing something on the subject, wanted to expose, stripping out naked, revealing the ugly faces, but couldn’t not because I was afraid or didn’t had any material, but because what I intend to make obvious is already as obvious as the sun at noon on a clear sky, need less if I emphasize more. Incomprehensible though.

Truths are proven as correct, even if one try to disprove, honestly though. Hence the question, Is it just a myth or a conspiracies erected by the opposition against the leadership of this country? The allegations, the charges, the blame game, couldn’t all be the political gimmicks? The dyeing economy, the runaway inflation, shortages of essentials, the war on terror, increasing hostility at boarders, the threat of Blackwater (Xe) … et al, couldn’t all be blamed to the preceding governments … na its the terrorists! … right!?

There can be two simple answers, Yes and No! If the answer is yes, then a layman one wonders, what measures the government has taken exactly to tackle the crises? If the answer is No, then … it gets very complicated for at least a common man to comprehend.

We have an instinct to forecast so that we my plan ahead, and we do so on the basis of the trends we see around, which today points towards an even more dark future. This makes one wonder for natural reasons “towards whom the loyalties of our leadership inclines?” I am not a political scientist, not a professional journalist even, nor I am a conspirator funded by the opposition, I am just a common man trying to figure out what’s the hell is going on. For me the demagogy is getting more and more obvious, so as my problems are … and I just can’t help shout, “Lemme out”! ….

It has been weeks since I wrote the preceding lines, and right now I can only move on to a higher – superlative degree if I portray the situation again. It is now becoming an open secret that our establishment is becoming more of a mouth piece of international powers, only taking dictations and ensuring submissive corporation.

But is it really their fault, or I would say, Is it really a fault in the first place? Or they are just doing their best? … It is an undeniable fact that personality of the leader reflect the characteristic of the masses; hence if the establishment looks sold, then make it clear that masses have already sold their honor, believes, values, pride, self-respect for pennies, may be to fed their empty stomach or to tame their lustful desires.

Now comes the K-L Bill! Did anyone notice the increasingly unreasonable tone of our (un)holy masters with white skins? … Put yourself in their shoes; simulate your behavior in your imagination, as if you are among the masters, for a beggar or a prostitute who keep asking you for more cash! what would you do with her, how would you treat her, how long would it take to tame you if you have unlimited supply of cash, wouldn’t it feels like as if you own or her, wouldn’t you stop unless she screams and beg for her life? (satirically)… Am I getting unreasonable? … now come back to reality, i.e. in your own shoes … how it feels now, is it like you are a sweeper working in a brothel? … Need a new career?

Beggars are not choosers, hence choosers are not beggars. Choosers own a free will rather; have self-respect, a vision, and a set of values or ideals! hence a criterion to make a choice. It’s a paradox of life, protecting these ideals and sacrificing things dear to us and our stomach eventually brings results which are most unlikely i.e. most rewarding, though in the long run . History is evident, the latter generations never honor and inspire riches of the past, unlike those who have made great sacrifices for their people like Prophet PBUH and companions etc.

What a common man can do? I would rather ask, who is a common man? In my view, a common man is common because he thinks so! … Ever heard the phrase “the flaps of butterfly wings on one side can bring a hurricane on other side of the planet“, if not then Google “The Butterfly Effect”. You can never estimate that your single seemingly insignificant deed can lead to unimaginable results at macro level, but nothing would happen if we choose to sit idle or rather prefer selling our soul for a piece of bread or a brand new car rather; but remember if you do so then may be coming generations of women of your society, let alone family, might be selling their bodies to survive (sorry! need to be that blunt) … you can drill only a single finger sized whole at the bottom of a ship to sink it, or vice versa … so would you like to give it a try … again!?

Awesome narration – so true and so close to the confusion faced by Pakistanis on a day-in and day-out basis –

YES sadly enough the President and PM are for sale – to this highest bidder on the block

No doubt people don't have any hopes from the government of Pakistan and it is one of the worst time we have ever seen. Can't say what is next to come.

We can not ignore the fact that Pakistan is on a decline from a long time, or may be ever since it came in to being and our Quaid departed. Our external and internal enemies, combined with the devil are fighting to finish us as a nation ever since 1947. But we are still alive, aren't we?

For those who are, they can stay like this or do some struggle to make a change. Our government is not in our control, so lets do something which starts from ourselves, practically for the cause of our great leaders.

I am proud of all those who are doing it and believe me, I see a big change coming in Pakistan and there are many who are working day & nights for it 🙂

    Long Live Pakistan !!!

If one goes back a year or so and reads local papers, one will find that the alleged mastermind of the attack on GHQ, Aqeel alias Dr Usman, had in fact been arrested by the secretariat police in October last year, for suspected involvement in the attack on the Marriott hotel. Reports published in national newspapers on Oct 25, 2008, said that an anti-terrorist court (ATC) in Rawalpindi had been told that four people had been arrested by the police in connection with the attack on the hotel. The report said that investigation officer Altaf Khattak had informed ATC Number 2 that the Secretariat police had arrested Dr Usman, Rana Ilyas, Muhammad Hameed Afzal and Tehseenullah Khan.

I have reread this post a half dozen times. Far from "awesome narration" [sic] it is quite possibly the worst piece of writing I have ever come across. Your point could have been summarized in three lines, and as an added bonus the grammatical mistakes would have been fewer. Why waste people's time with such drivel?

that said, there were a couple of hysterical (albeit unintentional) parts. My favorites were "the dyeing economy" …umm are you referring to dupatta dyeing in liberty market? also, "hostility at the boarders"…umm is that a reference to an Aitchison College phadda? There are tons more, but those were my favorites.

I normally don't make fun of people's English skills but since you are a "senior editor" at "Critic Magazine", I couldn't resist.

An extremely badly written, immature rant without any real grasp of the current political situation, or even just appreciation of the work and sacrifices Zardari has made for the mere survival of this country. He is one of the few reasons USA has believed that we are truly working against terrorism, and not come barging in with guns blazing to make us the next Afghanistan. Moreover, I suggest you properly read the Kerry-Lugar Bill and assess our need of those funds before passing judgement, and while you're at it, consult a dictionary, sir.

The only problem with the bill is the money isn't given to the Army "directly" as done in the past. The only difference is we never hear the terms which our Army agreed in the past recall Dr. Qadeer's house imprisonment in General/President Musharaff's tenure.

The Americans poured nearly $2bn into Pakistan from 1953 to 1961, when a succession of authoritarian rulers allied themselves with the US's worldwide defence cordon around the former Soviet Union.

In 1981, they negotiated a five-year, $3.2bn package for the military regime of Gen Zia-ul Haq to enable it to counter the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

During 2002-07, the US funnelled another $10.5bn to the military regime of Gen Pervez Musharraf for its help in the war against al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Source

I don't like Army and Civilian tussle, its not healthy for anyone specially when Army can only get rid of the evil created by US and Saudi money. Hopefully we all wake up and able to invest money to create jobs for poor and Majboor eho these extemists using as hired killers.

    Dear Neena,

Military Establishment cannot absolve itself from the Evil Created by US Money and Aal-e-Saud. Military Establishment committed a big mistake after General Zia's death by unnecessary fingering and manipulation in the body politics. Present mess is the direct result of that fingering of 90s.

    Read

Editorial: General Beg’s mess Tuesday, September 01, 2009

    http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=200

Ex-army chief General Aslam Beg (Retd) gets bogged down in damning facts whenever he tries to fend off criticism of his past misdeeds. In the latest attack launched by an ex-ISI officer Brigadier Imtiaz Ahmad Billa (Retd), his tenure as the army chief is again highlighted. The charge — as framed by those who are taking note of Brig Ahmad’s campaign — is that the PPP was victimised by Gen Beg and President Ghulam Ishaq Khan and that Ms Benazir Bhutto was dubbed a “security risk” in order to get rid of her.

In answer to Brig Ahmad’s accusation that operation “Midnight Jackals” against the government of Ms Bhutto was at the behest of General Beg and the then ISI chief General Hamid Gul, Gen Beg has now asserted that “Benazir Bhutto was no threat to national security”. To prove that she was “loyal” rather than a “risk”, he cites an incredible but typical secret agency report in 1990 that “the US, the Israelis and Indians were planning to attack Pakistan’s nuclear facilities”. According to him, her response was that “the Pakistan Air Force should be ready to attack India’s nuclear facilities in case Pakistan was attacked”. But if one reads the memoirs of Ms Bhutto, she doesn’t return the compliment. In fact her version is that General Beg didn’t trust she would be sensitive to the security of the country and was warned off certain areas of policy that the army had monopolised and was not willing to change despite a string of failures. She was asked to stay sway from the Afghan policy, Kashmir policy and the nuclear programme, among other issues.

Gen Beg is also keen to divert attention away from his Mehrangate scandal and focus instead on — in his thinking — a less culpable source of the money that was distributed among the politicians to defeat the PPP at the coming polls. He says, “The Saudis had given bags full of money to Mahmood Haroon to woo politicians to join the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI), which was constituted to ensure that Benazir did not return to power”. To make it more realistic he has added the detail: “Haroon had claimed that the ‘money-bags’ were so heavy that his shoulders hurt for days”. But evidence shows that it was not Mr Mahmood Haroon’s shoulders that hurt but the hearts of the account-holders in the Mehran Bank that bled when details of how the bank had disbursed big amounts of money to Gen Beg came out. However, Gen Asad Durrani, the then ISI chief, has stated that he had distributed the IJI funds on orders from the army chief. If Mr Beg knew that the money was going to unfairly tilt the elections against the PPP, why did he allow the ISI to distribute it? Especially as he thought Ms Bhutto was no security risk.

Gen Beg is apparently running out of his stock of red herrings. Instead of explaining his own problems with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, he has chosen to explain how Mr Sharif fell foul of the then army chief General Asif Nawaz. He should have explained his insubordination when he went and discussed the nuclear programme with Iran without consulting the prime minister. Mr Sharif is on record as having complained that Gen Beg was running his own nuclear policy in violation of his oath as the chief of Pakistan Army.

Gen Beg is in the habit of floating impossible theories as “breaking news” simply because there are people in the national media willing to listen to his anti-American rhetoric. Whenever there is a need for this kind of catharsis, he contributes fantasies that he has named “strategic defiance”. His latest pronouncement is that the people (read the US) who killed General Zia in 1988 also killed Benazir in 2007. He has blithely disregarded the fact that in any investigation of General Zia’s death his name has cropped up again and again.

Not surprisingly, this has compelled General Zia’s son, Mr Ijazul Haq, to say: “Mirza Aslam Beg should participate in the criminal investigation into the deaths of General Ziaul Haq and Benazir Bhutto if he has information about the killers”. Mr Haq is also on record as saying that he had read the “secret” Justice Shafiur Rehman (Retd) Commission report on the death of General Zia and that it had contained information about how the army had obstructed the commission’s inquiry. *

South Asia – Pakistan lays down the agenda for the US

Meanwhile, what surprised some was Karamat’s dismissive tone about the A Q Khan affair, which he labeled a “proliferation episode” while denying any government complicity in it. “There was no government sanction, approval, or any kind of government connection with what went on,” he said flatly. But Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, in his 11-page confession reported in the US press in February, named Karamat, former chief of army staff General (retired) Mirza Aslam Beg and President General Pervez Musharraf as the men on top who were aware of what was going on. As the chief of army staff from 1996-98, Karamat was directly responsible for the safety and security of the nuclear program.

One example will show the negative impact of such maneuvers. DG ISI Ziauddin Butt was close to Nawaz Sharif and not trusted by GHQ. Army chief was dealing with some crucial matters through his own intelligence officers. Taliban of Afghanistan were getting two sets of emissaries and they were fully aware where the real power centre was in Pakistan. Butt’s ISI emissaries were in contact with Taliban while representatives of army chief were telling Afghans not to listen to Ziauddin Butt.

@Omar Javaid you wrote a superb article. But you said that one man can make difference and i agree with that. But in Pakistan every man doesn't want to be the first one to sacrifice or compromise. One more thing that leadership plays an important role to make people united like Nawaz Sharif and other leaders did in long march. But now Mian Brothers are not trying to attempt anything like that you know why coz they have their own concerns. So i think a leadership must come in front and should take the flag of honor is his hands and lead the massive army of common men.

@ sikandar, i agree but let us just not wait for the leadership to wakeup …. let us also do what we can do in our limited capacities.
