After Lahore blast, people will give you different reasons for the blasts; they will say that it is Pakistan and America’s fault; America and Pakistan trained these people earlier to fight against Soviets, and now they have turned against both; they will say these people have nothing to do with Islam, and Islam is a peaceful religion; they will say these people do not represent Islam. May be it is true. But somehow, somewhere religion is involved, and one can not deny that–hence, these savage killers believe that they are just about to meet 71 virgins after committing mass murder. They are doing all this in the name of God, the most compassionate, the most merciful; whether with his approval or without.
It is not just one particular religion, most religious people, whether belonging to Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism or Islam, are different from people, who let’s say have very casual attitude towards religion or do not believe in God at all. Here in USA, I have personally experienced, the more religious a person is, it is more likely that person would hate certain “others”. In the case of Christian religious fanatics in USA, they have long list of people whom they hate, but these days mainly Muslims.
In the case of Islamic fanatics, they have long list as well, in fact Islamic fanatic hate almost every other religion, every other religion is their enemy, be it Christians, Jews, Hindus. In the case of Pakistani fanatics, the situation very strange, the only other culture they seem to like is Chinese, who don’t even have a religion. A Pakistani fanatic would prefer a Chinese over a Shia or an Ahmedi without blinking his eyes.
The more religious you are; it is more likely that you fail to accept or tolerate any other belief, but yours. This is where missionary zeal leads people to fight it out with others. Some religions seem to have more of it than others. Almost all the wars were, and are being fought to advance religion, or in the name of religion.
Few years ago, I was talking to my uncle, who is very religious person himself. He mentioned that how he admires Hitler, and if only Hitler had stayed in power few more years, all the Jews would have been wiped out from this earth. It really got me thinking, and I asked him, do you mean all? He said, yes, all, because all Jews are horrible people. I asked him again, what about countless little babies, few days, months or years old? What crime those little kids committed, for which they were killed, assuming that may be adults did something wrong, because they at least had the chance to do it. He had no answer. It seems like religious hate and zeal completely blinds people of any rationality.
The most hated people in religious philosophy are those who do not believe at all; Atheist/ Liberals etc. But who do Atheists/Liberals hate? If you are an immigrant in USA, having different religion and culture, the only people who fully accept you wholeheartedly without any judgment are the ones who don’t believe in God. It is an important question to ask, why believers of God are so full of hate and non-believers so full of compassion and understanding? Why so much killing in the name of most compassionate, most merciful.?

Actually, my experience was quite different. The people from whom I experienced greatest acceptance in the US were people of faith, from religions other than Islam. To be fair, most of the non-believers I came across were courteously tolerant of my faith. But because, as you say, there is a difference between people who believe in God and religion, and people who don't, there was always a slight barrier.
I recently met one of my American friends. Fifteen years had passed since we last met, but both of us immediately felt at home, and discussed that the search for the Divine crosses cultures and religions, and is a pretty universal human yearning.
So yes, there are many religious people who are extremely intolerant. But by no means all. And atheists can often be just as intolerant of the religious as any religious zealot.

Muslim immigrants may relate more to core bible built values because of shared values. Anti-abortion and anti-gay values for example are common. It may just be more comfortable to interact with individuals who share such important values which are the core of our identity.

Religion is problematic due to the value judgements involved. Every person has their own interpretation and their own value system. Its more difficult to find common ground passively but much easier to find common ground if it is based on hatred.

A timely topic for discussion indeed. But to start with can any body define religion, except as 'absurdism', used by vested interests to divide humanity into conflicting irreconcilable groupings of 'us' and 'others' in the name of their respective god and/or prophet or guru, etc., etc..
Atheists are just as prone to violent behavior as anyone else. We have examples of Soviet & Chinese atrocities in the last century.
Do you really think the world would be a peaceful place if all of us did not believe in a God? Is the believe in God the real reason for all the wars that we face today? Was Hitler motivated by religion to carry out all the atrocities that he did? Are the Israeli's motivated by religion in carrying out the massacres of Palestinians? Is America waging wars in Iraq & Afghanistan because of religion?
You need to dig deeper into every conflict and war to find the real reason is always economic & political. Where does religion come in between? Religion is just a marker that people use to identify with a certain group & it is easy for those in power to manipulate people to fight their wars using religion as a pretext. When religion cannot be used the power elite use other markers – ethnicity, nationalism etc.
If the American President launched the Iraq War by telling the truth that they wanted to secure the oil flows from the region would the American public have supported him? So he had to mask the rhetoric in nationalistic bullshit like they are against our freedom & stuff like that.
When people are denied their rights they will retaliate & religion becomes the rallying cry just as in many cases it is nationalism.
Do you think Muslims are inherently prone to violence because of their believes & it has nothing to do with the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine?
In a way you have answered the question yourself. You write that "A Pakistani fanatic would prefer a Chinese over a Shia or an Ahmedi without blinking his eyes." Why do you think its like that? Is it because of State Propaganda that portrays China as a great friend of Pakistan or is it because of the religious beliefs of the person?
