PRESS CONFERENCE: Protest Against Nationwide Government Ban of Facebook

For Immediate Release

Defenders of Internet Freedom Protest Against Nationwide Government Ban of Facebook

On Wednesday 19th May 2010, the Lahore High Court ordered the banning of Facebook across Pakistan. Facebook is the world’s most popular social media network and is used by over 400 million globally. In Pakistan, over 2 million people use Facebook to stay in touch with their friends and family, conduct business, manage events, and share photos, news, and other content. A few days ago, a page called “Everybody Draw Muhammad Day” was created on Facebook asking users to submit drawings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on 20th May 2010. This page, interpreted as blasphemous, has triggered a nationwide ban on the entire Facebook domain.

While we recognize that sites on the Internet are used to spew hatred and incite violence, we steadfastly believe that governments have no right to control access to information. We believe that every citizen has an inalienable right to freely access information and by censoring Facebook, the Government of Pakistan has taken away that right. This action will have a very negative impact on Pakistan, especially considering that countless small businesses, nonprofit organizations, restaurants, art galleries, magazines, and media outlets use Facebook to conduct day-to-day business and share information with their stakeholders.

In 2006, the Supreme Court of Pakistan banned the entire blogspot.com domain for over 18 months over a similar incident where only one blog carried blasphemous cartoons. Thousands of Pakistani bloggers were deprived of the freedom to express themselves and interact with others. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority now has the ability to block specific pages on the Internet and could have banned just the single blasphemous page. As members of civil society and professionals who depend on social media networks for our daily communications, we demand the immediate restoration of Facebook and an end to Internet censorship by the Government of Pakistan.

We would like to invite you to a press conference to discuss the worrying trend of Internet censorship and the resulting impact on civil liberties and the free and unfettered exchange of ideas and information.

Date: 20th May 2010
Time: 5:00 pm
Venue: Karachi Press Club

    Yes, let there be ban.

Yes this ban will not stop people from insulting Muhammad S.A.W.W, but at least they know that we disapprove their actions.

These are the double standards they play day in and day out.

If a similar group was created to deny or belittle the hollow-cast, there would have been an uproar and facebook would be appologizing to the jews….

But when it comes to insulting Muhammad (S.A.W.W), we are told to embrace *freedom of speech* and told to not see content if it hurts you. Why can't this same reason then be applied to the anti-semitism too?

I agree with QaimKhani here 100%

I would like TM to reply to this.. why the double standards for freedom of speech … I deny "hollow"-cast … its my freedom ..

BUT try making a group called 'deny holocaust day' and in 24 hours your community with your profile would be taken down by the fb, and there are huge chances that your name will get included in the al-qaida wanted list and you may get sold for around 5000$ to the USA…

      freedom of speech my foot!

I don't think you can compare the Holocaust, where about 6 million Jewish people were tortured and killed, to cartoons of a religious figure.

Denying the Holocaust is illegal because it was decided that such a terrible time should never be forgotten. I think that is a good reason for the law.

I hope you can that remembering the Holocaust ensures that, for example, if someone declared war on all Muslims, we would say NO! We would see it was another Holocaust, and stop it.

So there is no reason for you to deny the Holocaust. It is not a bad thing that people of the world have chosen to remember it, so such things never happen again to anyone.

      @David:

"I don’t think you can compare the Holocaust, where about 6 million Jewish people were tortured and killed, to cartoons of a religious figure."

      That is your thinking…

We Muslims put the Prophet above ourselves…hence it can be used to metaphorically show the equivalence!

"I hope you can that remembering the Holocaust ensures that, for example, if someone declared war on all Muslims, we would say NO! We would see it was another Holocaust, and stop it."

So are you waiting for 6 million Palestinian/ Iraqi/ Afghani to die before you say

      "oops" another holocaust has occurred?

Apparently, Any NO is not loud enough to be heard as of yet!

"So there is no reason for you to deny the Holocaust. It is not a bad thing that people of the world have chosen to remember it, so such things never happen again to anyone."

If i am not mistaken the guy (Qaim Khani) was trying to say is that someone suggested to draw out how the holocaust looked like…

Would you like that? That group was banned by FB within minutes! But drawing the prophet was left despite people protesting…

    4. Ali Adnan Avatar
      Ali Adnan

      @David:

now you "might get" my point . regardless of whether I accept/deny Holocaust or not

think about this . the real reason is that when u deny it … it hurts a lot of people's sentiments mainly jews

now why doesnt the non-muslims understand that its equally if not more hurtfull for muslims of the "whole" world .. more than 1.5 billion people , when some one ridicules our Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) .. and let me add here that drawing any type of caricatures of The Prophet ((S.A.W) is "forbidden"/blasphemous and hence "hurts" us to the fullest degree.

I ask you .. what do these artists gain from it ? why do it ? . its just for the "pleasure" of hurting us … I think everybody calls this "sick" and "sadist" . right?

why is people's amusement dependent on hurting "muslim" sentiments ? have the topics in the world come to an end ?? .. is there nothing else to joke about ?

Does freedom of speech really means to go and "delibrately" hurt 1.5 billion people's sentiments ? to "delibrately" flame them ?

I totally agree with Nazia. We Pakistanis are truly hypocrites, we are forgetting the fact that the cartoonist who started the group to submit caricatures of Prophet Muhammad as part of “Draw Muhammad Day” is an american and so far U.S. Government has not taken any step against the woman who has hurt the emotions of countless Muslims all around the world.

Instead of imposing a ban on Facebook, Google, Wikipedia and Flickr don't u think it would be wiser if we ban whole of "United States of America". Stop speaking english, ban CNN and FOX NEWS and most important stop begging them I wonder where does our Islamic teachings go when america bully us to do more send Black water on our land, where does our Islam go when so many innocent people are killed in frontier province in drone attacks, nobody ever stood up and said Ban America, we have done enough, no more killing of innocent lives.

Where were we? when america invaded Iraq, Afghanistan and was backing Israel in killing of innocent Muslims. We never fail to beg or take aid from USA. We go there scrub floors, become waiter, salesmen, take admissions in their universities get taught by their non-Muslim teachers and are willing to do anything for green card. How many of us are willing to give up our american nationality and payback the aid for dignity and honor of our Beloved Prophet(P.B.U.H) and for all those lives that were taken by these cold blooded Americans. We never ban the corrupt politicians, who become the head of state, pardon criminals like Rehman Malik and suck the even last drop of the blood from the poor citizens of Pakistan.

The only thing we Pakistanis are good at is making noise over petty issues. Instead of conjuring up stupid controversies like the recent bans of Facebook and YouTube because of some silly drawings, the 172 million citizens of Pakistan should focus their political attention and economic resources on educating their women, improving their rule of law system. Its idiotic closing eyes like pigeon, it won't going to stop them and would not change their views by this stupid move instead we closed the gateway of knowledge and communication , it has isolated us from rest of the world. We should have used these websites to promote softer image of Islam and spread the message that we are not terrorists. We have given them free cheap publicity. We should step up and face these fitnas and try to become better Muslims who sees bigger issues.

I do not know why do we have to put an end to Facebook, and Wikipedia, and Twitter and Youtube to show we are protesting (while porn still continues to be widely accessible). The animation says it right, we have been flung into the dark ages, and what's worse, is that some of Us, who think they have their act together as Muslims and want to send the author of this post (and me after my comment – of course) to the banishment of hell, and nothing less, because apparently (God forbid) we apparently don't love our religion, and the Prophet as much as they do. However, they seem no to realize that if media of information are banned, then no matter what you do springing up and down in your little rabbit hole, no one in the world is going to give a flying rat's ass! Because they are never going to find out… because PTV is not one of the local channels of the Seattle cable network (and honestly even if it were, their language is hard to understand for the locals of S.I.T.E let alone Seattle)

So stop being judgmental, and stop living in the middle ages. Get your act together! and Dr. A Bravo! Your efforts are highly commendable, and appreciated! 😀

"I do not understand how you can end up in the dark agaes from lack of facebook or wikipedia or youtube and twitter??"

It's not the medium that is bad, it's the content. Content, that should have been deleted by facebook and banned by PTA but not the medium.

"You are left behind if you are incapable of adapting- THAT is true…but why do you want to adapt to wrong things?"

Who says that youtube and flickr and Wikipedia and facebook are wrong things? It's like saying pencils are evil since the artists used them for this. How hard is it to understand for someone that can write English (and use Internet)? Google still indexes all that content, should we switch that off too? There are like millions of facebook pages, youtube videos, wikipedia articles that are spreading the peaceful message of Islam. All gone with this stupid decision.

"Hence, create a social site that moderates hate speech even hatred against non-muslims..because if you hate them then how can you pass your msg to them which mind you is fardh!"

Yes, by all means. Please go ahead and do that. After all, we are most technologically advanced nation in the world. We can sure create this, naheen?

"Furhtermore, before facebook we were in the same condition as we are now…so by having facebook we did not actually get enlightened nor are we going into dark-ages by loosing facebook…"

This is like saying that since people managed to live in stone ages, let's all burn everything and go back to the caves, we'd manage that too. But that won't be going back to the dark-ages, would it be?

I really am disturbed to see how our educated class is behaving on this. I think there is no wonder that we are in the shit that we are in.

SO the idea of a nany state comes in. Where they tell us wat to watch and what not. Youtube, facebook and all these sites are closed. How Jahil we were…If im not wrong FACEBOOK wasnt famous yet back then…AND we were still in the dark ages…

Then came Afghan and Iraq wars…what did we do? We watched it on tv and complained!

Then came Dr.Afia's case…What did we do? Curse non-Muslims and sit and watch it on tv…

Now the government took an action we are upset we were involved?

    Funny isnt it?

You must be saying "I wanted to JUST watch it on tv and curse the Non- Muslims/Kafir"

Please do not become a nation that doesnt know how to show gratitude…

You dislike something do something abt it…PROTEST – PEACEFULLY

If you JUST WANNA SIT AROUND then do not curse the NON MUSLIMS…not that i am saying now that we did something we can justify cursing non-muslims NO

SHOW ur A UNITED MUSLIMS NATION!

This is why i think Pak govt blocked fb and other sites- to show we are united and will ban it if it is preaching such things…

They took a stand…have some respect or atleast learn to appreciate something…

Shas! Are you some sort of self-appointed corrector of the people? And before you begin bashing my reply, tell me this:

On 15 May 2010, I found out about this "Blasphemous" event and immediately put it on my facebook profile. Not just the event but my actual status was to encourage people to research about Islam and educate those who didn't know.

I had made three videos about Islam and educating those who wished to draw these cartoons and I wanted to roll them out on May 20.

The whole bloody ban made it impossible for me to spread the goodwill message and now I'm stuck here listening to self-proclaimed righteous people like you debating mindlessly about right and wrong.

YOU ARE WRONG SHAS! THE WHOLE POLICY IS WRONG! THIS WHOLE BAN IS WRONG! OUR GOVERNMENT IS WRONG!

Now stop bickering about and face the facts. The ban ultimately made more of a mess than making amends.

    2. SHAS Avatar
      SHAS

      @Haroon…

I believe you read in between the lines…

All i said i am for temporary ban not permanent FULL STOP..

IF the govt puts a permanent ban then im against it because media is a powerful tool which can be used in both directions…

And if the ban is long term the positive usage of the media is lamed…

The above statement was an answer to a particular post…

ALL I AM SAYING (and believe me i have repeated this about 3 times here alone) IS:

TEMPORARY ban should not show such a negative ATTITUDE BUT

IF the ban is permanent i have no problem with everyone opposing to it..

BTW, this is why we are here to give our ideas/feedback of HOW WE UNDERSTAND THE SITUATION…

But if someone is whining i believe they should see the bigger picture so i picked up a few points where we (majority) and the govt of Pak did nothing!

I am just happy govt of Pak showed it is capable of doing something (as long as they do not over do it)

-NOW IF THEY (the govt) is doing for own self interest then i am also against it…

ALL I CARE ABOUT IS PUTTING OUT FOOT DOWN…if it means a 1-2 week ban (temporary ban)i am not gonna be classified into the dark ages…

NOW, that the govt wants us to know they are not dead, i would like them to show reactions towards other WRONG things going on..

      WHO AM I BASHING?

JUST BY SAYING WE MUSLIMS ARE TO SHOW WE ARE UNITED IS BASHING SOMEONE?

I was saying through unity we are capable of achieving a bigger GOAL rather than small scale works (as you stated what you did)

I am not sure why we Muslims take everything negatively when it comes to unity?!

Did you not see the consequences of the UHUD war? When the archers left their positions? EVERYONE HAS A ROLE…be it significantly small or big…BUT UNITY IS MORE IMPORTANT!

    @SHAS:

I never said we are in the dark ages because we don't have FB any more… We are in the dark ages because we are being told what information we can access by someone, who has no right to monitor and/or control portals of public information in the first place.

Did you know that HIV/AIDS awareness campaign of the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation financed a series of 5 documentaries, which were produced under the banner of Mira Nair films. They were made in Urdu, Hindi and Tamil, and focused on issues pertinent to the South Asian subcontinent. It was a great pleasure for me to show those videos from Youtube to an Aids patient meeting that we had arranged (I am a doctor)and since they were widely available, we could stream them any where, and educate people on those issues.

We can't do that anymore, because those videos were hosted on YOUTUBE and what I'd get to show in the next Aids education seminar is ACCESS DENIED with any luck … Nor can anyone reading these posts who does not know the origin of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation or the full form of HIV or AIDS, be able to find the meanings as quickly as they previously could, because the first entry after a Google search is from Wikipedia and the meaning they'll get to know is ACCESS DENIED!

Bill Gates foundation announces new grants on their Twitter page, and I was subscribed to that, and the UNHCR (I'm sorry I'll want you to find the full form on your own) page on FB was recruiting people to participate in this human rights campaign, but I'll never know when that's happening…

    Welcome to the Middle Ages.

      @ Reader,

      I understand your misery here…

Like i said if the Ban is temporary i agree with it but if it is here to stay…I do not agree with it…

Media is a strong tool – as you described above…

It has both pros and cons…depending on usage..

IF the authorities in Pak banned it to strike out "rubbish" videos/sites then that is good- you can call it upgrading…

IF they did it to show their protest- to a certain degree it has worked as fb is also looking into giving a censored version of itself to Pakistan…

This is helpful esp for the youth!

However, if Pak govt treats it as a permanent antidote then even i will protest against that…

MEDIA is something MUSLIMS are behind in…and even i myself have a few groups in fb to help with Islamic knowledge as well as scientific knowledge and comparative religion discussions…

All these will be useless if people can not access them!

So please read my full statements…

For those who are opposed to this protest, this protest is not because we are being deprived of certain websites. It is has a deeper insight this is a breach of our rights as a citizen, the right which enables us to have accesses to information. We stand in unity against the deceiving clergy whose sole aim is chant “Murdabad Slogans” set fire to public property and watch the country turn into ashes!

We cannot let the extremists force drive our nation towards destruction.

  16. SHAS Avatar
    SHAS

The reasons as to WHY i agree to temporary ban:

    a) You reap what you sow or to every action there is a reaction…meaning you (facebook) did not listen to the protest by many Muslims about that page…now face the reaction…

    b) Will give youths time to do something else…Scientists have proven that computer communication is not the healthy…

    c) IF this ban was not set up…Pakistani Muslims (esp the extreme ones as you have seen after Banazir's incident) would have caused havoc all over the country (their attempts at demonstration are not very healthy!

IS it not better to loose some websites for few days then to live in fear of stepping out of the house (as condition of Pak was after Banazair's incident)?

AGAIN i would like to stress I AGREE WITH TEMPORARY BAN not PERMANENT BAN!

Its a high time and we Pakistanis should start realizing now that imposing a ban permanently on social networking and other major websites would only going to make a matter worse.

Just because of 1 sick minded individual they shouldn't have blocked the whole medium. this world is filled with good and evil it's upto us to chose the right path. frankly Facebook has lot to offer because of FB Muslims and Non-Muslims were interacting with each other and lot of misconceptions about Pakistanis being ill-literate, extremists and terrorists were being cleared. We forgot about those countless groups, forums and videos which were promoting the good image and proper message of Islam on Facebook and YouTube

And not to forget because of YouTube we came across some wonderful eye openers such as 'The Arrivals'. and I wonder why are we even believing that they are drawing our Beloved Prophet(P.B.U.H) we should be courageous even to say on their faces that this stupid drawing of yours can never be our Holy Prophet(P.B.U.H) even believing that they are drawing Him is sin and by putting a ban these websites we have closed ourselves behind walls where no one can hear our protest.

abu jahl wasnt abu jhal becuase he was a non Muslim. both abu jahl and abu talib were prophet[s] uncle. both died as a non muslim. but one is remembered as a friend as the other as an enemy.learn the difference 🙂

it takes 5 MINUTES by "the civilized world" to DRAW a sketch and tamper with the sentiments of the Muslims. as i said Muslims aren't lab rats where " the civilized world" has the right to conduct tests whether the rats will react peacefully or aggressively.

when Muslims of mecca tolerated cruelties it was because they didn't have power nor a social status and more importantly they did have a voice but no willing ears. even then there was a protest conducted by the prophet[s] for three years.so why cant we as a nation protest till only 31st may?

for two whole weeks the cartoons were on Facebook . Muslim reported abuse. the Facebook authorities didnt deem it"civil" enough and hence no action was taken.

the profit loss made them so sensitive and civil that with in less than 24 hours they were considering banning the objectionable content from Pakistan.

ironic isn't it>? only from Pakistan they were considering removing the pages. does the Muslim world resides in Pakistan only ? if civility is money oriented than didn't we speak their language ? after all its their civility who understood our civility with in 24 hours.

the examples you gave there are Muslims who raise voices against it. if the civilized world is so deaf regarding those voices than thats not our issue.is civility objective ?. it should have been a civil stance by Facebook as well as rest of the world that sketches should not be drawn or posted but than again whats the fun in that? after all they are getting free specimens for their experiments right?

the ban is a simple way of showing that we disapprove of their action.is it less civil than facebook turning deaf for more than two weeks?

      =========================

Wrong rather absolutely wrong. Abu Jahal aka Umar Bin Hisham wasn't Prophet Mohammad [PBUH]'s Uncle. Abu Lahab whose real name was Abd-al-Uzza ibn 'Abdul Muttalib was Prophet Mohammad [PBUH]'s Unlce and also condemned in Quran. Abu Talib whose real name was Abd Munaf ibn ‘Abd al-Muṭṭalib [Father of Hazrat Ali – May Allahe be pleased with him] was also an Uncle of Prophet Mohammad [PBUH] and Abu Talib never embraced Islam and that's why Abu Talib is condemned in Hadith as Kaafir [Read Saheeh Bukhari].

I simply say on its reply

"Although we were addicted to facebook, we are not going to die without it."

Shame on those who still think of using facebook after their owners reply

"those blasphemous events which are annoying for muslims are not violating our rules and we are not going to remove them…..

    @aamir

jazakALLAH FOR CORRECTING ME ! still my point still remains.

and regarding the denial part i didn't say DENy ISLAM i said undermines it.holocaust was a reality that was done by a LOONY HEAD . any reality denial by the Muslims undermines our religious teaching.an atrocity is a atrocity whether done by a Muslim or a non Muslim.

anyhow we are getting away from the topic.

…just wanted to point out that the DARK AGES was really the Golden Ages for the the Muslims so maybe we really do need to be flung back to them……hmmm;)

Why are the citizens being punished by restricting their rights?

Students of our country are suffering who depend upon the internet for research and studies. Businesses are also being affected due to the ban on facebook.

PTA needs to restore facebook immediately.

We want facebook back. Instead of progressing, why is the nation planning on going back to the stone age. If we have to go back to the stone age, then we might not even have a government! (NOT TO OFFEND)

FB should be banned till may 31st..

they should bear losses for what they did..!

still we r thinking of our own!! feeling like oh my god if fb bans permanently what would happen to our business, jobs, communication mediums?..cant we wait till may 31st?? what could happen worst if we'll stop using facebook..?.before facebook we were in the same track on which we r now! still u guys r thinking what world 'll think about us? ha…world is laughing on us since the day zardari became our president.. choosing zardari did'nt effect our image on global level but banning fb 'll do that..haha funny! either jahil zardari'll turn us in stone age or BAN OF FB? get a life!

prophet Muhammad S.A.W.W) for muslims is the most respectable person on earth..how some kafirs preparing their selves for hell could INSULTED HIM..!!

they used to call us fundamentalist when we protest against these hateful attempts from them..

so what should we call them when their so called 'most reliable detective agency' FBI destroys lives of millions of Muslims without having proofs against them..just because they felt them suspicious..just because those innocent were Muslims..

if we r fundamentalist then they r foools a big fat group of fooolss sitting there capturing muslims for no reasons..huh hypocrates!
