Nasim Ashraf Resigns – Bluff ?

Cricket Bloggers of Pakistan : Geo.tv has just started displaying of a news report that Nasim Ashraf has handed in his resignation as Chairman of PCB following the miserable debacle at the World Cup. His reign of 5 months at the helm of cricketing affairs in Pakistan were far from smooth and attracted some unnecessary attention to himself rather then allowing the smooth functioning of the cricketing body and its team.

It is rumored that he has offered his resignation to the President of Pakistan, but it has not yet been accepted. Personally the President of Pakistan has too many things already on his plate to worry about cricket but then again I feel this is just another clever ploy played by Ashraf to attempt to avoid a beating at the hands of Pakistani fans. He is just dilly dallying and will use this news report of having offered his resignation to allow him enough time to sneak the cricket team back into the country and when addressing any press conference he can catapult past the harsh questions which many Journalists will throw at him by simply saying ‘…hey I offered my resignation but the President insists that I stay’

I would like to stand on record to be willing to call this a bluff, I could be wrong but gutt feeling and his loyalty to Pervaiz Musharraf reeks of something fishy. Interestingly cricinfo also still chooses to call it as ‘citing unconfirmed sources’, I assure you it will forever remain unconfirmed.

Cricinfo reports

A local station said that he handed in the resignation letter to the president of Pakistan, who is also the Patron of the PCB, late on Monday. It was not clear, however, whether it had been accepted. Citing unconfirmed sources, the station said the chairman had accepted his responsibility for the World Cup debacle. He had only been at the helm for five months as he took over from Shahryar Khan who resigned in October

I hope, for the sake of Pakistan Cricket, nothing else, that you’re wrong Awab. May god give Mushy some long awaited sense and may he rid Pakistan Cricket of the nuisance that he him self and his faithful bunch of tail waggers are. Please, please, please.

There are many factors to consider before we base any conclusions over the resignation by the Chairman PCB. Every one is quite preturbed over untimely death of the Coach who would be remembered for his professional upright which was overshadowed more due to managerial hiccups. However, coming back to the resignation decision of the Mr Naseem Ashraf, his decision can be based on more of a flow with the water course. The selection committee resigns, Captain Inzy announces retirement, President condemns Pakistan Team’s performance and then logically the burden of criticism shifts from Bob’s death to the Chairman. But wondering, what can you expect from a person to revolutionize who has only taken over the charge approximately 5 months ago. He should not be expected to play a magic stick to turn the complete infrastructure upright. Unfortunately, pathetic physical standards, management loopholes, non availability of bouncy and grassy pitches in the country and psychological pressure of nation’s expectations are more intangible attributing factors than the tangibles. Lets not loose our hopes but reduce our expectations, and wish that this shamful defeat posture gives birth to an opposite responsive and macro+micro shuffles of our cricket policies. Bangladesh Team has defeated India not because of motivation (in my opinion) but more because of the youth comprising an average of 19 years. We are at a threshold where if we do not run the PCB as per the constitution and grass root talent hunt, i am afraid we shall be doomed our National Sports (Hockey).

I share your cynicism regarding this news. It is hard to walk away from a business generating hundreds of millions of dollars.

Lucky, youth is naturally motivated and fearless. We’d do well to completely rehash the team, inject some under-19, and prepare for the next world cup. But we heard this idea last time so maybe, not such an inspired thought.

OK here is the scenario. Previously, some members of cricket team are accused of misdemeanor (spending nights in night clubs, etc). So the slack created by them is fulfilled by tablighi jamaat inspired cricketers. As a whole the team sobers up and becomes mature. When they are doing fine, controversies are created (artificially – like the Darryl Hair episode). Shaharyar Khan is forced to resign. And ‘Roshan Khayal’ Naism Ashraf is erected in his place, nothing more than to discredit the now disciplined team members.
Trust me, there are more things happening behind the ‘global’ scenes than meets the eye.
In all GOOD RIDDANCE. And hope his chief and buddy follows his footsteps – namely Musharraf.

I don’t share your skepticism at all TM and I agree with Lucky that this was always on the cards after our shambolic performance against the Irish.

with all respect due, Wajih, I have to disagree with your line of thought. Those drinkers you mentioned were the ones who brought the nation its greatest cricketing moments. With them gone, there is no one with any fighting spirit or imagination left on the squad. No one to pick up the slack if you may.

Good riddance to dr. nasim, I agree. I can now only hope we can send the maulvis back to the madrassa.

alibhai, if you remember well, these drinkers sold (literally) the 1988 worldcup, the 1996 worldcup etc. what was the greatest achievment after 1992 (the great tukaa). who can forget the match fixing? who wants that era back. and mind you try to learn to distinguish between mullah and maulvi. you will be surpised.
