Update @ 1555: Tips for protesters marching towards Karachi Press Club

Bloggers who are participating in the protest at the Press Club in Karach which started about a half hour ago, have sent in messages stating the visibibility of a heavy police (Nafri) prescence posted around the Karachi Press Club (KPC), and the numbers are continuing to increase. The roads around the KPC have been cordoned off and it is predicted that that the police opposition to the protest will be one extremely brutal scene. Protesters have been urged to bring helmets and other personal safety gear to dodge rubber bullets, tear gas and batons with the request to stay peaceful and keep the protest non-violent even if provoked by the police since a non-violent protest sends across a powerful yet effective message.

Some suggestions below from bloggers/organizers for those planning to attend the protest today and others in the days to come:

1) Meet closer to press club, like PIIA and then walk together to the press club, in groups of 4.

2) The rule to follow: no adventurism — we’re not much use to the cause if we’re jailed or killed. So try to stay out of trouble, but don’t give up.

3) Please sit down or lie down upon the ground and refuse to budge/move and the police will find it much more difficult to be violent if there is ‘passive resistance’.

4) Home-made Tear Gas Remedy (via a message posted on a facebook group):
-Take a bottle of tap water
-Take an onion
-Take a thick towelette
-When teargassed, wet towelette, bite down upon the onion and wrap towelet around face.
