Iftikhar Day on 31st January – protest at KPC

Sindh High Court Bar Association is planning to commemorate 31st January as Iftikhar Day to highlight the hardships faced by the legal community in Pakistan following the illegal imposition of emergency on Nov 3rd in Pakistan. The SHCBA will have a bar meeting and then take out a procession to finally stage a massive protest outside the Karachi Press Club. The same call has also propagated to other cities in Pakistan and such similar activities are scheduled to be held there as well

All those who support this cause are called out to the Karachi Press Club at around 10:30am to give these lawyers a rousing welcome for their sacrifices for Pakistan and then join the lawyers in the protest activities. I am informed that various Civil Society groups, NGO’s and other similar organizations in Karachi who have been struggling for this cause are planning to come out in full solidarity to show their support

Attached here is the request for support sent out by the President Sindh High Court Bar Association, Justice (Retd.) Rasheed A. Razvi

That on the 3rd of November 2007 , under the pretext of ’emergency’ the Constitution of Pakistan was suspended and as a result approximately fifty five (55) judges were unconstitutionally retired out of which thirteen (13) judges were from the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Eleven (11) of those judges are still being detained under house arrest, which includes the Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. The removal of Judges was most unconstitutional and malafide as General Pervez Musharraf was anticipating a decision against his candidature for presidentship from the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

At the same time, some two thousand (2,000) advocates nation wide were also detained and later on released, however, the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association Mr. Ch. Atizaz Ahsan, Mr. Ali A. Kurd and Mr. Justice (Retd.) Tariq Mehmood are still under detention. All these ultra constitutional acts were done to perpetuate one man rule in Pakistan.

Therefore, to lodge an international support and to campaign for their release and to highlight the hardships and illegalities being faced by them, the Sindh High Court Bar Association in its General Body meeting held on 17 th January 2008 passed a resolution dedicating 31st of January 2008 as ‘Iftikhar Day’. We urged that on this day the entire legal community and other professional bodies/organizations, trade unions, student community and other members of civil society should express full support to the cause of independent judiciary and rule of law in Pakistan and to arrange protest rallies/meeting/demonstration throughout the country and abroad.

We request your prestigious organization to also take part and help us in making this day an international event.

I hope your continuing commitment and support for the restoration of judiciary and the rule of law in Pakistan will help us achieve our objectives.

Thanking you,

Yours sincerely,

JUSTICE (Retd.) RASHEED A. RAZVI
President
Sindh High Court Bar Association

    @ Nazia,

I am also away from home and wish to be back next month, before you go back, you can participate by calling your family, friends and those who care to vote against dictator in comming elections (although it doesnt matters in such large scale rigging) and tell them to support “freedom movement” untill we are a free nation.

Or, if you are in some place where there are quite a number of our countrymen, then arrange some procession there, but unfortunately the place I am in dont have many Pakistani’s.

When I am back I will try to pay this debt by participating actively.

    To unaiza
happy iftikhar’s day to specially people like you.If you dont understand the dignity of justice movement in our weak nation then no problem because we know very well that most people still believe in continuity of slave master culture and any movement that is hurting the masters’ unlawful acts is not acceptable to our system.so keep on reading the different articles regarding dictators ,human rights values and its importance,Principles of ruling mafia, real problems of pakistani culture and sooner you would realise that why civil societies are joining hand s to support our CJP ch iftikhar.

Nice trick Maestro! This is the way you belittle those comments not supporting your viewpoint! Who knows better that your supporting comments are popping from the same IP addresses too. I think you are levelling ground for not publishing mine and many other contradicting comments next time (as you might be very busy in deleting them as “trolls”).
Have some tolerance in a tolerant society, is the message of the day 🙂

    Unaiza… its evident!
Musharraf is corrupt… he just wants to be in power.
There is no justification for him to oust Judges of Superior Court, make mockery of law by totally abridging its intent and spirit… like today Aitzaz Ahsen has been further detained… this is not even allowed under his own law…i.e. MPO.
Mind you the Lawyers movement today was a hit… thousands joined in …. Police and Rangers had to back off.
Think out of the shell Unaiza.
LongLive… Struggle for Restoration of Judiciary!

Unaiza – I had no intention of belittling you / shut out opposing views, if that were my goal I would have simply deleted it from the start, it is not in me to shut out opposing views, every argument as two sides and its important to listen to both – no one is perfect.

I have never edited YOUR comment but when I saw two comments back-to-back originating within a matter of minutes off each other, something struck out as suspicious and just a casual look revealed the matching IP – I would have let the comment go unedited but since someone from the same IP stooped to camouflage the comment I thought people should know. But in all honesty I might not like your arguments but that does not mean I block you out. Its a free world, and as long as its decent – we are all ears.

All said my commenting system does have a profanity check, and is hard at preventing spam – if your comments get lodged in there I cant help it. but have never deleted a decent comment ever, apart from those who go beyond decency or resort to personal attack – that said I do still reserve the right to decide whats acceptable and whats not
