How a betrayer Lover and an unsuccessful Spy become PPP’s “Close Associate”

Guest Blog by Talkhaba

I’m unable to understand as why the news editor didn’t make heading of it. Was it important to tell that Brigadier® Imtiaz had once saved Nuclear Assets by arresting the failed lover cum spy, whose plans became known to Mr Bila only after when his annoyed beloved felt betrayed and not as result of extra ordinary efforts by our intelligence agencies or this fact is more meritorious for heading that the spy being arrested was set freed by PPP’s first government and he later joined the party?

After reading Rauf Klasra story about the failed love story which cost the US loose her spy being hired and trained as informer about Pakistan’s nuclear assets and his subsequent arrest, I even didn’t noticed the death and life imprisonment sentence as those were obvious. I thought the man; Rafique Munshi would have been hanged.

Titled as “Brig Imtiaz reveals CIA plots”, the news story by Ansar Abbasi on Tuesday, September 01, 2009 reads; He [Brigadier Imtiaz] claims to have foiled two American CIA plots to sabotage the country’s nuclear programme.

I am not going to discuss the second Plot of CIA. We are going to discuss here that part of story which was reported by Rauf Klasra few months back but not with such big discloser.

The story by Rauf Klasra in the same newspaper on Thursday, May 28, 2009 informs us that Pak N-program was saved by a jilted Karachi woman.

The story reads;

“As the nation celebrates the eleventh anniversary of Pakistan’s nuclear tests today (May 28), a shocking 30-year-old secret has been exposed. It reveals how a young woman college lecturer, feeling betrayed after a romance with a nuclear scientist of the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP), had given a lead to the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in 1978, which in turn had led to the dramatic arrest of 12 Pakistani scientists and engineers, planning to sabotage Pakistan’s nuclear sites at the behest of a superpower.”

It further reads;

The startling spy ring was exposed by this female college lecturer of a Karachi Memon family to the then head of ISI Sindh Brig Imtiaz Ahmed (Operation Midnight Jackals fame), only because she wanted revenge from her lover for being unfaithful. The expose led to the arrest of Pakistani scientists who were later given death and life imprisonment sentences by the special tribunal set up by the then president General Ziaul Haq.

Actually, It was brig (retd) Imtiaz Ahmed who in Rauf Klasra’ words “broke his silence of over 30 years to share this amazing operation with The News on the eve of the 11th annual celebration of Pakistan going nuclear. He said that while many people take credit for saving our nuclear programme, no one actually knows how an unsung jilted girl had actually ended up saving Pakistan’s nuclear project out of sheer vengeance.

Here in the story by Ansar Abbasi, the source is same Brigadier Imtiaz who told him what he had shared with Rauf Klasra for his story published on 28th May 2009 except the one sentence which speaks volumes. Just to mention here, the Second part of the Ansar Abbasi’s story is about Brigadier Imtiaz’s Success in persuading the individual, “Star”, to work for Pakistan as a double agent; however there is nothing new in his story except these lines which in my views should have get place as heading;

“Brigadier (Retd) Imtiaz said that he was decorated with Sitar-i-Rasalat for foiling the CIA plot. However, he said, Rafique Munshi, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, was released during Benazir Bhutto’s first government and got closely associated with the Pakistan People’s Party.”

It may be called professional inefficiency or political duress to not highlight it, the fact remains as why PPP freed a traitor and betrayer and as a worst case why PPP opened her door for such a person? I am not going to issue a verdict as why so many traitors have managed to get associated with PPP but I would certainly ask about this proven traitor and betrayal. I am also worried about the now older beloved of Munshi after all he has get freed.

    Rafiq Munshi's Version: ‘American agent’

    Perhaps the most bizarre of such incidents was the arrest of a trade union leader in Karachi, Rafiq Safi Munshi on the charge of being an American agent. A few months ago Imtiaz Billa ‘disclosed’ in a newspaper interview how he trapped an ‘American agent’ who was passing on nuclear secrets in Karachi to his ‘handlers’ at the US consulate. Many may differ with the Rafiq Safi’s style of politics, but the fact is that he was associated with the PPP, and was a prominent leader of the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation’s (KESC) trade Union, and was not working at Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (Kannup) as the retired brigadier had portrayed. Even otherwise, what has Kannup plant got to do with Pakistan’s nuclear weapons programme? But in the martial law period the arrest of any opponent of the military junta was justified, and branding them as Indian or Soviet, or in one case, even American, agent kosher. Jang Group of Newspapers, GEO TV, Salim Safi, Shaheen Sehbai, Rauf Klasra and Ansar Abbasi should be ashamed of theirselves before filing a Cock and Bull Table Story of Secret Cell and State Funded APP Journalists because it was the Jang Group of Newspapers which statrted giving undue attention to Brigadier (R) Imtiaz since July 2009.

    On the same Mehrangate Scandal, Brigadier [R] Imtiaz had said to to Salim Safi in GEO TV Program JIRGA that money was indeed distributed to keep the balance between left wing and right wing political parties of Pakistan and he further said that Jamat-e-Islami was provided money and they provided us receipt of every penny they spent in the election campaign against Benazir Bhutto and PPP. Brigadier (R) Imtiaz repeated these claim again in yesterday's Daily Jang (pasted below). Dear Talkhaba and Friends,

    Reality of these TV Channels [a glimpse] is as under:

    These top TV Anchors are more ruthless than Intelligence Operatives.

    I had joined Express News TV Pakistan in May 2009 ago as a Researcher and read it yourself as to what kind of treatment I received from their top management.

    http://chagataikhan.blogspot.com/2009/08/unethica

    Funniest thing is that on 10th July 2009, THE OWNER OF EXPRESS NEWS TV [Sultan Lakhani] made me Incharge of Express News TV Research Section to coordinate with everyone in Expressnews [Current Affairs Anchors e.g Qatreena, Mubashir Lucman, Imran Shirvanee, and Kamran Shahid] and 13th July 2009 I receiveda telephone call from Director Program – Senior Executive Producer Karamullah Ghumro that "your services are no more required because we don't want Retired IB Officer working in Express News TV. Read my resign and analyse level of these numskulls insecure Owners/Anchors of TV Channels:

    Unethical Behavior of Express News TV Pakistan.

    http://chagataikhan.blogspot.com/2009/08/unethica

    They didn't even clear my dues for the work I gave them in advance for 6 months.

    Aamir Mughal,

    It kind of make sense. BUt Kanup still has direct relations to the Pakistan Nuclear Programme….

    But I would agree on Brig Imtiaz's profile. He looks like a Gand__ out of (Na)Pak Gand__ Fauj

    All he is trying is to take away hanging of Pervez Musharraf. I don't think Pakistan Govt has any GUTS to try Musharraf. On the other hand I strongly hope that a SON OF MUHAJIR will hang this bastartd from Habib Bank Plaza..

    UGLY FACES OF PAKISTANI MEDIA [Dawn Group, Jang Group, GEO TV, NEWSONE, INDUS VISION]

    In 2002/2003 I was thrice interviewed in The News International [Interviewed by the then Executive Editor Ms Humma Ahmed, Shahrukh Hasan (Group Managing Editor, Jang Group) and three other gentlemen of HR. My appointment was finalised all the papers/contract were signed [that Humma Ahmed much before this official work 'used' my services for the Jang Group of Newspaper – nowadays Humma Ahmed has suddenly become Human Rights Activist protesting in favour of Child Molester Journalist of Jang Group Nayyar Zaidi who is in US Jail for Child Molestation] and out of nowhere after three months of waiting period she suddenly called me and said "we couldn't appoint you because you are a Retired IB Officer [I just asked one question that why did you accept my CV in the first place???].

    Similar treatment I received at the hands of Mujahid Barelvi [Indus], Shams Kazmi [Aurat Foundation/now GEO ], and Adnan Awan [GEO TV], they all used my work/research and then didn't even pick up the phone. Same treatment I received from NEWSONE's Director Ashraf Khan [he said why dont you remove the IB Service Record form your CV].

    Dawn Group of Newspapers is even worse, they call me for interview in July/Aug 2005 and I was interviewed twice by the so-called Intellectual Muhammad Ali Siddiqui and I was also give a test paper to solve with clear instructions by this Muhammad Ali Siddiqui,

    "quote" Dont Cheat and Dont use Influence/Source for appointment. "unquote".

    After the test/exam Mr Siddiqui said come back after three months and when I went there after three months Mr Siddiqui again gave me another question paper to solve and after that test he said we will call you in three months {as per him I have a flare for writing and as per him my answers for the test were excellent} and I am waiting for that call since 2005.

      Just a little reminder to Aamir Mughal… his initial meeting with me and work at The News was "freelance" when he offered to do some research on background material. There is no doubt that he is talented individual and the interview he refers to was genuine in intent and purpose.

      Hiring policy in organisations is not up to an individual alone. The same applies in large publishing houses and therefore given his vast experience and knowledge I am surprised that he would hold it up as a personal slight and to name and blame.

      The fact that it took 3 months was certainly not deliberate and given that "his appointment was finalised" the 'intention' to hire him was genuine and thus recommendations were made by me for this purpose. However the unfortunate decision to withdraw the job offer would have come at Group management level and the Executive Editor tasked to deliver the news. Thus this certainly wasn't a personal action to slight Aamir Mughal.

      I say this because of the comment in reference to my suddenly becoming a "human rights activist" on behalf of another former senior correspondent of The News (who is 60+ years old) jailed by the American authorities. Aamir surely has heard of "innocent until proven guilty" and that when there is "reasonable doubt" in a particular case then the extended incarceration of an individual must be questioned. One is surely entitled to an opinion as a private citizen when no longer a part an organisation where both (Mr. Nayyar Zaidi and I) have worked?

      Even "a retired IB officer" should surely understand "motive", "intent" and how individuals can become trapped victims of a frame-up when they get in the way of agencies and governments? Mr. Mughal himself once told me of such activities which I am sure he does not recall now?

      However I will only say that he is entitled to his opinions though I do not think that an offensive stance is the best way to get even. Aamir Mughal did some valuable research work and was always brisk and timely with any task requested of him. It was because of his professional approach and his frank manner that he was considered for a job position. I am sorry that he remains aggrieved at the outcome and can only apologise on my part.

      Hummaa Ahmad (former Executive Editor, THE NEWS International)

      MS Huma,

      Ignore thie hue and cry. I think you can judge from Amir's post that you guys saved yourself from the heck.

      The accusation aginst Nayyar Zaida are that he went out to meet un-underage girl. The accusations never say that he molested children.

      On the other hand his ability to make 'baat kaa batanggar' qualifies him to be in GEO News :) LOL

    Imtiaz, Gul, Durrani, Beg are worse than Animals. You were not even close in defining them [as you have above] they are far worse and you must believe me.

    Regarding Trial of Musharraf [forget about it because Pakistan Army will prefer breakup instead of their men in court room] because when you hold trial then trial would be of whole army, read why?

    Mr Ansar Abbasi 'forget' to mention that the so-called Sitara-i-Basalat [not Risalat] was awarded to Brigadier Imtiaz on Sifarish because Brigadier was very 'poor' and sole brother of 5/6 sisters [Reference Profiles of Intelligence by Brigadier I A Tirmizi – Former number 2 in ISI].

    Yes, we are all as a nation traitors as we betrayed the ideals of the great Quaide, in the first place, by allowing the obscurantist religion-mongers to subvert the Constitution of Pakistan of 1973, embodying those ideals, into theocratic, anti-Islamic, inhuman Fatwa. To-day we are fighting this very monster of theocratic extremism with, what we call, 'moderation', without touching its root-cause.

    As for Musharraf he was playing just a very petty pawn in the history of this great betrayal. Why should be singled out?

    @ Amri UNCLE!

    It is interesting to read your comments. These mostly cut and paste from the original post at your blog. I am sure you haven't read the whole post but have jumped to the conclusion or found it an appropriate place to discuss our personal issue with a TV channel which couldn’t bring to the limelight through your own blog e.g. not a single comment there. We need to question our reporters, especially the “Nazir Naji” of English Journalism, I mean Rauaf Klsra.

    Your original post starts with the words" Anchors/Editors/Owners are more ruthless than Intelligence Operatives" but your communication through office ID shows that you had problem with producers and not host. Karamullah Ghumro is the brother-in-Law of Adnan Awan who personally didn’t let me to appear in interview leave a side appointment. Just because of my background.

    But frankly speaking I wouldn't be able to comment regarding your case until and unless I see that you had been providing research material other than blogs and internet data. Your intelligence background is also negative point as we have everything but not investigation. It seems that our intelligence officers have nothing to do except as to act as suppliers. I am sorry to use these words but this is the reality and this is what I have witnessed in KU.

    Post a single comment on the above post without bringing your personal rift with TV channels and only then will be I able to say something useful.

WOW.

    Who is to be believed Usman Khalid, the born again democrat, Abidullah Jan whose website say and preach something entirely different and his 'fellowship' with Brigadier Sahab, suggest something entirely diverse!

    Dear Ms. Farah,

    I had an opportunity to listen to the "Bunkum" of Brigadier Imtiaz in 1991 when I was in service in IB. You wont believe me but he while addressing an "Official Darbar" of Officers had declared that

    "QUOTE"

    I AM A SADIST

    "UNQUOTE"

    May Allah forgive me for even repeating the words of Brigadier Imtiaz.

    "QUOTE"

    Prophet Mohammad [PBUH] and his Companions [May Allah be pleased with all of them] had adopted espionage during Ghazawa-e-Badar.

    "UNQUOTE"

    Shame on my former boss for comparing ruthless, unscrupulous , cold, cruel, and dirty espionage of nowadays with Prophet Mohammad [PBUH]'s life.

    FYI, this so-called Sadist wept like a Child when he was put on trial. Bloody Looter.

    During Musharraf's Regime another gift IB had as its head in the shape of Major General Rafiullah Khan Niazi [he was like bull in a China Shop] and while addressing an "Official Darbar" of Officers advised to all the officers

    "QUOTE"

    "offer Jihad in the way of Allah from Fajr to Isha. Those amongst you who are married when wake up take a bath, offer prayers and then leave your home for Jihad and then come back in the afternoon, have lunch and take a nap with you wife and then wake up take a bath and then leave your home for Jihad and keep doing it 24 hours a day.

    "UNQUOTE"

    Officers there were amazed at the advices and they were wondering that, was it official/professional briefing or short course of sexual intercourse from Baheshti Zaewar????

    Even the Rampant Musharraf in 2000 sacked Rafiullah Khan Niazi from the department and that too forcibly [he was not leaving the charge] because newspapers were full of Rafiullah's Corruption, Nepotism, and Incompetence. Even in Darbar this Major General Rafiullah Khan had no table manners, he was eating like pig.

    Amir Uncle;

    I have picked that picture because I agree with its content. You may differ but I strongly believe that Pakistan Army is fighting an American war as mercenarily force. This what Musharraf himself has established in his book. The caption is exactly what which Musharraf has proved through his policy and his successor Kiyani by keeping this war continues. Pakistan is our and so is Pakistan Army and we have the right to criticize it if it deviate from its stated role. As for as Abidullah Jan’s nexus with LISA is concerned that’s not my concern although I agree with most of their write-up I have strongly disagreed with Abidullah Jan Sb inevitable pak Afghan Union’ a chapter in LISA’s journal.
