Lahore High Court orders Facebook blocked till the 31st of May

Following hot in the footsteps of the controversial Draw Mohammed Day, Lahore High Court has issued orders to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to block facebook up till the 31st of May on an petition lodged by Islamic Lawyers Movement on Tuesday

Daily Times: Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry of the Lahore High Court on Tuesday issued notice to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority secretary to reply until Wednesday (today), on a petition seeking a ban on Facebook, which is holding a competition of caricatures of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Islamic Lawyers Movement filed the petition through Chaudhry Zulfiqar advocate, who stated that a competition was announced on Facebook on April 20 which would continue until May 20, asking all the members of the website to create their caricatures to participate in the competition

Tribune reports that PTA urged the court to only ban those particular pages showing the offensive drawings. It is said PTA still awaits the orders when they will be handed down from the Ministry of IT, after which a nationwide ban will go into effect on facebook.com

I believe this is an overkill on an issue that could have been handled easily by placing a filter/block on the particular offending Draw Mohammed Day Facebook page URL. It must also be noted that the Draw Mohammed Day campaign has registered an official website which is no where mentioned within the petition or the court judgment and remains freely accessible. Blocking a website with the hope that the evil curse shall disappear is counterproductive and only draws more attention to the issue.

In 2006 Justice Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry ordered the PTA to block 12 website on a petition filed by Dr. Mohammed Imram Uppal which resulted in the blocking of 10 million blogs hosted on blogspot.com, at that time PTA did not have the ability to block a particular URL and the filters that it had installed on the Hubs catered for only filtering out IP level blocks which forced PTA to block the blogspot.com IP and hence all the blogs located on its sub-domains were rendered blacklisted for Pakistani, this continue for a good 18 months until Google upgraded its servers and changed the IP, PTA never reacted hence forth. Since a good two years PTA has some very high end cutting edge technology and they are able to block any URL on the internet, to youtube videos being blocked at the whims of politicians and even some Anti-Pakistan propaganda that the government may deem unhealthy for Pakistanis.

Blocking the entire facebook, that too for a good 11 days until the 31st of May is mind boggling, it would render only about 2 millions Pakistanis hungry for their daily dose of social networking, but it sends a wrong message to the world.

While I may halfheartedly agree with a particular ban on the offending Draw Mohammed Day page, but I must condemn the across the board ban by Lahore High Court, it does little to solve the problem, we as peaceful Pakistanis were lobbying to force Facebook to block the groups activities, our outreach was peaceful and with a definite commitment we had condemned this issue to such a strong degree that we might have possibly been on the verge of a break through, to be honest no one from the Muslim world was so emotionally charged lobbying against this group as we were here in Pakistan, now they have a free reign to celebrate the Draw Mohammed Day. to have won, while our government simply forced us to keep our eye closed.

Why should the people of Pakistan suffer for an action committed elsewhere, it may have better been to order a Pakistani lawyer to represent the people of Pakistan filing a lawsuit in the jurisdiction of Facebook and accuse them to having violated their own terms of service listed on their own website. It may have taught them a lesson to not repeat such a mistake again. Little good this ban shall do now in Pakistan.

    Dear Awab,

I don't agree with you at all. Facebook is clearly involved in it and we must ban them. Do you know facebook banned the "May 20 – Everybody Ridicule & Draw Holocaust Day" in 20 minutes after it's reporting (http://www.thejidf.org/2010/05/action-alert-muslims-launch-hate-group.html ). Where their free speech gone while banning that page? Now when 35,000 has reported about a page as "Hate" which is clearly a "Hate" why facebook is not banning. Go to hell Facebook. 55% Muslims use Facebook and If we boycott we can make a difference. Insha Allah.

    complete facebook.com should be blocked

at-least it will give a strong message to facebook's Jew owners that we DO CARE about our religion and can also live without facebook

IMO just blocking the offending URLs would be counterproductive as it would just go unnoticed by facebook and the world, when traffic will drop to zero form Pakistan than it will sure ring some bells at places where it matters most

and lastly, facebook isn't wikipedia or Google that its ban would hamper our 'research' and 'learning', it should be banned for good as it is just a waste of time

WOMAN" (en auzobilla!) do u realize that its our struggle to control temptation not take the object of the temptation and destroy it… we should set fire to all living things that think put them on stakes and watch them wretched things burn… oh sorry folks we will all be there too you know… we got (wankers in our pants too!)dude.. this is brilliant.. KILL THEM ALL (including our selves).. all religions tell us we are fundamentally evil.. you know thats why the prophet killed all folks in mecca when we captured mecca those infidels that were still living there with idols in their houses and a different faith..now is that what he did? or did he burn all the bars??? or stop … what did he stop… wait he stopped nothing he left the choice to us to choose which path we take, shame on you people. you know you are right… knowledge and wisdom are curses.

Do you ever think how much FACEBOOK gets financially from us? If they don’t care for us, they why we should use it. Its a positive move for LHC, PTA & PAKISTANI Government. YouTube is blocked too.

I must say that Government is doing good so far, we’re Muslims, we’ve our rights, so don’t get loose in front of these jews (which are involved in it).

Why ‘FACEBOOK’ blocked us even we are reporting the group having ‘porn content’,'hatred speech’,'Direct Violence Call’, but why these jews groups/people remains safe?

Boycotting/ Banning/ Blocking the whole ‘FACEBOOK’ & ‘YOUTUBE’ will turn Insha’ALLAH both of them into a huge loss.

We will built our own Social Network soon Insha’ALLAH.

Since we don't have what it takes to block/remove that single page, blocking the site is the next best thing.

Yes, it may make the issue grab more attention but at least we are protesting at some level.

  6. shobz Avatar

I agree with doc. There really was no point in blocking the whole website. It will not make the problem go away. Ironically we gave this issue more attention than everything else. What happened to the Muslim World who is silent on this whole issue? It's not as if facebook will feel bad and block the page. Doc is right when he says we should go file suit in their jurisdiction and challenge them. Banning Fb will not stop Islamophobia. The purpose of asking FB to stop them from promoting hatred was a noble cause. Our nation is known to be too emotional and we never take any practical decisions. We could have achieved something by lodging a protest instead of drawing more attention to ourselves by blocking the site. So the court fears that our people will g to the site to check out blasphemous images of our Holy Prophet PBUH. If people are so upset about it they wouldnt do a thing like that. This is all very stupid.

Yes, as you say, it is all very stupid. I ask, why should one open the site one does not like and why to debar those who like to see it from seeing it? It is sheer hypocritical absurdism of the people who consider themselves 'Pak', citizens of Pak-stan. They won't stop killing Hussain, Aal-e-Rasool, or target killing his prodigy, but would not let Pakies only to decide how to deal with a hateful cartoon.

I totally disagree with you, boycotting their website shall make them suffer with the loss, but i am surprised to see the comments of you people, you still want to surf their websites and help and contribute in their economy, which they use back against us? it was a bold step taken up by High court we should appreciate it. The problem with us is that we have become so much modernized and we barely care about all this non-sense, because we cant leave their tendencies their ways of living their eateries, this is the reason our hearts have become so cold. And i am so much depressed to read that you guys mentioned we Pakistanis are emotional, i ask a question.. they are Humiliating our Prophet P.B.U.H, whom we should love more than ourselves, more than our souls which calls us true Muslims, so we in return don't have the right to become emotional?? this is the most decent way to protest, the way the web has been blocked. I believe that's the best way and all other Muslim states must follow it.

    1. Appoint one or two lawyers representing the state of Pakistan, filing lawsuit and if they do it (which would be a perfect utopian dream), then mind you it will be the biggest lawsuit on Facebook yet, and because their case is pretty weak, so…!

    2. The threshold needed for blocking a certain group on Facebook has been already achieved long time ago but the group is still there so seems like it is definitely been backed by Facebook itself (even though it violates its own terms), so there is no logical reasoning left for reporting more and more the page, instead, the specific URL can be blocked or even the URL, because in the same way as Danish products were blocked in some countries (and it gave Denmark a sizable trade shock), Facebook also is an internet/intellectual commodity, and according to CNN and Facebook statistics a huge financial gain comes from the millions of muslims worldwide, and boycotting the whole site will definitely result in a pretty sizable and shocking financial gains, remember. Meanwhile the proper legal action could be, and should be taken. To me it seems like a reasonable and logical way for a proper action.

Umm. Sorry, @Hira and anyone else who took my comment seriously, I was being sarcastic. I think this is a completely ridiculous decision, a waste of judicial time and quite frankly, an embarrassment to the Pakistani community as a whole. I didn't even KNOW about the page on FB until I started getting messages about how the Lahore High Court had decided to put a temporary ban on Facebook.

The logic makes no sense, and nor do several of the responses people have put up, cheering this decision. By the standards of decision-making displayed so far, you may as well ban the entire Internet, because somewhere out there are pages that contain material you may find offensive.

@ Mohsin: Friend your judgment needs logical reasoning, how do you think a ban on the website is waste of time and energy? If you acknowledge the fact that FB is an internet commodity and only Pakistani 2 millions+ users are a source of huge financial gain for it, why don't you think it will create a monetary shock for FB admin? all depends on if you believe on putting sanctions to register your aggravation and protest in an effective manner!

…It would be a lot better and less loss of 'your' energy and time too if you give logical reasons in support of your arguments + reasonable alternatives…so far your comments have been void of these unfortunately..

… West always does this to you when it wants to prevent you from doing something, i.e, it puts ECONOMIC SANCTIONS on you….

……..the banning of FB here is also a type of sanctioning because it will hurt the website financially!!

so please try to realize the bigger game here! its called, 'playing in their own terms and on their own turf'…

in other words, take the wit from your enemy if you lack some of it,— or at least if you oppose the argument, give logical reasoning to support it too! quit the emotional game.

I personally agree with the facebook ban, however, blocking Blackberry & now youtube is a bit extreme.

If the world is talking about promoting inter-faith harmony, than the world should realise now how sensitive muslims are when it comes to Prophet Muhammad(PBUH). Not understanding their sentiments will only amplify clash between civilizations. Ideally & per FB rules, the group should have been deleted by the FB admin themselves, just like they do with other offensive and violent stuff. Not doing so itself shows their double-standards, and I guess it is sane and humane that it should be protested in someways. Remember how a 50K Zaid Hamid page was brought down by them considering it offensive!! It would have been, but likewise the world knows how offensive caricatures are for muslims.

Some people are objecting even FB ban, stating that it has only spilled the dirt which was previously limited to one page. I disagree with that. As a general rule, I consider it cowardise & immoral to hide or cover up any offense or wrongdoing.

  26. Mohammad Avatar

The point of blocking the website is not to "kill the evil"…it is to bring to the attention of Facebook the fact that is bothers us when they allow such things and that it can hurt them (financially)…as we are such a fragmented society someone has to make a call when something like this comes up. I believe it is the right call made by the LHC. This should also teach us something as Muslims and Pakistanis…that we are totally disunited and cannot positively assert ourselves as followers of Islam…had it been so, the LHC would have had no reason to ban the site as we would have self banned ourselves and shown by our restraint that we are disciplined and united and will not stand for nonsense dished out in the name of freedom of speech, expression etc.

Now, we have stop to rely on these sites, we're condemning but this should not just for a short time. These sites must be banned/blocked forever.

In Saudi Arabia, Iran and other Muslim countries all kind of 'Porn' sites are blocked and soon Insha'ALLAH, they will be blocked in Pakistan.

China had blocked 'FACEBOOK' since many years. They today too rely on men not on machine (Mao Maxim).

But Sadly we MUSLIMS don't even think about the Sunnat and Quotes of Muhammad (S.A.W.), but after today Insha'ALLAH, we will survive on this planet according to the sayings of MUUHAMMAD (S.A.W.), Insha'ALLAH.

Thank ALLAH that Pakistan blocked/banned ‘Facebook’ & ‘YouTube’. Other MUSLIM countries should also perform the same act in this situation.

We MUSLIMS don’t want anything which is against all religions.

The ‘BAN’/'BLOCK’/'BOYCOTT’ will Insha’ALLAH give a huge financial loss to the ‘FACEBOOK’ & ‘YOUTUBE’.

I’m a user of ‘Facebook’ since 2007, but now I’m thinking to shut down my profile. Also I’m using ‘YouTube’ but after this action against our ISLAM, we will give them a huge ‘Reaction. Because “Every Action has equal & opposite Reaction”.

We are not afraid of anyone else accept ALLAH. We’ve our rights, if anyone will try to break them, then the ‘one’ will be punished.

I’m 18 year old and all my colleagues, friends, family members, Pakistan and the Muslim countries don’t want to use these websites anymore.

Insha’ALLAH we will develop our own ‘Social Network for MUSLIMS’.

Nobody living today has seen prophet Muhammad (pbuh)so nobody can be sure about drawing him (pbuh)

The pictures on the page are outrageous and people who have posted there should be prosecuted for religious hatred?

ive been talking around to a lot of people and taking notes about their opinions about the matter…

there are many misconceptions people have at this point

    1. facebook will be economically strangled if we boycott.

no sir… pakistan itself on an international level will be strangled… makes no difference to facebook if 2 out of its 440 million stop using it..

    2. economically affecting them will make a difference.

wake up… the people who are making these pages and posting on them will have no affect what so ever… the authorities might have some affect… and they can stop the public.. with force ofcourse… but heres my question to the people in favour of the boycot.. is it better to abandon these people with their incorrect faith or to correct them… and although im not a very good muslim myself heres a couple of examples…

a woman used to throw garbage on the prophet… eventually.. the prophet was able to convert her to a muslim… it is to be noted however that the prophet didnt stab her or even say anything to her

AbuJahls wife used to curse the prophet along with a lot of other people… at the time mekkah was taken over the prophet forgave her and almost all other people involved in harassing and ridiculing the prophet

the prophet forgave people who stoned him as much that his shoes filled with blood

so if the prophet can forgive like so… who are we ? are we right if we boycott these people and leave them or their own ? isnt it our duty to convince them to believe in the truth rather then use force against them ?

Generally ive noticed that the intellectual people ive met… with generally high IQs… have all accepted that a boycott is not a sensible thing to do… and in these intellectual people were some of the most staunch muslims too…

unfortunately for any country… people who use their brains to think logically are very few compared to others…

PS. Facebook is owned by Christians not Jews

these people forget that pakistans largest export market is the USA.. and when its not USA.. its majorly the non-muslim world

if America were to boycott pakistan because they were offended at our public cursing them in protests all over pakistan… today… pakistan would have lost all its international market.. we would have been a bankrupt nation… abandoned by the world…

and with the type of neighbors we have… we would have either been under taliban rule.. or indian rule…

and the funny thing is … 90 % of the people who are making so much noise saying the boycott is right… visit porn websites on daily basis…

so basically… its okay for us to Watch porn… which they make mostly… but its not okay for them to make drawings of our Prophet… which we have an option not to look at…

our public is so fond of boycotting the non muslim world.. perhaps we do not understand fully the consequences if they bycott us…

If we really like to be a Muslim then we cant be one until we love Allah and Muhammad (S.A.W) more than our lives, kids, wealth and beyond every thing. This is a true saying of our holy prophet.

I dont care wheather banning FB will impart financial losses or not but if this act can make me stand high in front of my prophet I will Inshallah never use this channel of communication again as they have ridiculed him who we love most

Well I am really disappointed with the attitude of facebook as they have deleted my account without giving a single damn warning. My fault was that i wrote strict letter to them regarding this discrimination in freedom of speach. When zaid zaman hamid wrote about zionists, they banned his page within couple of minutes.what a ridiculous matter of fact it is

Hi Dr Awab ! If you are worrying yourself because banning Face book will send wrong message to the world then it is ok. A wrong message should be sent to world that we take our religion before social networking.

I have another concern here. Now that the lady who initiated the whole issue has apologized and FB peoplehave shown their interest in solving this issue..how you think it going to happen?

my suggestion is that we have to beat them with the same weapon they use on us not by aggression….like there are news about Turkish students hacking the blasphemous pages… something intelligent will work!

    POINTS TO PONDER:

    1. BBC NEWS DOES NOT CONFIRM ANY LOSS TO FACEBOOK REVENUE.

AS USUAL ARE WE DISILLUSIONING OUR PEOPLE.

    2. BY BLOCKING ACCESS TO COUPLE OF SITES, DO WE CONSIDER OURSELVES TO BE MOMINS, OR ARE WE BEHAVING LIKE THOSE COMPANIONS OF THE PROPHET ( P.B.U.H) WHO BACKED OUT IN A BATTLE WHEN THE PROPHET NEEDED THEM MOST. ONLY MAULA ALI STOOD FOR HIM.( SHULER ALLAH ).

3.I COME FROM CHRISTIAN BACKGROUND, WHERE EVEN MENTIONING NAME OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD WAS CONSIDERED TO BE A BAD OMEN.TODAY THE CHRISTIANS AND JEWISH SOCIETY HAVE COME A STEP FORWARD, AS TO IMAGINE THE PROPHET.

IMAGINING THE PROPHETS AT THEIR END IS NOT BLASPHEMOUS. SO MANY PORTRAITS OF THEIR PROPHETS AND MOVIES HAVE BEEN PRODUCED BY THEM AND MUSLIMS HAVE WATCHED THEM KEENLY ALSO, NO ONE PROTESTED AGAINST THEM.SO IF ANY PERSON WANTS TO IMAGINE THE PROPHET WHY STOP THEM WHEN WE KNOW AND BELIEVE THAT THERE CAN BE NO IMAGINATION FOR HIM. EVEN IF IN THE FORM OF CARTOONS, LET THEM. WHY ARE WE AFFIRMING THAT THE CARTOONS ARE OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD BY RETALIATING. ARE WE NOT OURSELVES COMMITTING THOUHEEN E RISALUTH.

THINK POSITIVE. I GUESS THE TERM WAS ‘ DRAW MUHAMMAD’S DAY. ( NOT PROPHET MOHAMMAD), AS A NAME MUHAMMAD CAN BE ANY ONE MAYBE THE GUY WITH WHOM THEIR WOMEN DATED AND IT ANGUISHED THE WHOLE SOCIETY. DONT FORGET LADY DIANA CASE.4.WHY ARE WE WEAK IN OUR FAITH, WHY DID WE NOT OPT FOR JIHAD,

REMAINING ON THEIR SITES AND WAGING WAR PEACEFULLY. WHY HAVE WE RUN AWAY,FROM OUR DUTY TO PROPHET MUHAMMAD ( P.B. U. H) TO SPREAD ISLAM THROUGHOUT THE UNIVERSE.WHY HAVE WE FORGOTTEN THE CONDUCT OF BELOVED PROPHET IN WINNING OVER JEWS AND CHRISTIANS WITH PEACE.

    5. WHY HAVE WE AFFIRMED THOSE CARTOONS TO BE OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD.ARE WE NOT GREATER SINNERS THAN THEM. THEY ARE IGNORANT SO THEY WOULD BE FORGIVEN, BUT WHAT ABOUT US WHO KNOWING THE HIGHNESS OF CHAHARDA MASOMEEN, STILL GOT INFLUENCED BY THEIR NEGATIVE THOUGHT.6.WHY DID WE NOT FORM A GROUP TO WORK ON ALL SUCH SITES, VIA VIDEO CLIPS, RADIO PROG, PREACHING ISLAM AS TO ELIMINATE THEIR MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT ISLAM7. A QUESTION FOR YOU.. IS IT BETTER TO WIN SOULS FOR ISLAM OR IS IT

BETTER TO FLEE. ITS IS US WHO NEED TO CHANGE AND THINK POSITIVELY AND JIHAD PEACEFULLY, BUT ALAS WE BECAME THE TOOLS TO AFFIRM THAT WHICH HAS NO GROUNDS AT ALL.

ALLAH SUBHANA THALA SAYS IN QURAN.

    SURAH INAM ( VERSE 113)

To such (deceit) let the hearts of those incline, who have no

faith in the Hereafter: let them delight in it and let them earn from

    it what they may.

IF I BEING A WOMAN CAN WIN VICTORY BY PEACEFULLY STAYING IN JIHAD AND SHUKER ALLAH TODAY MY CHILDREN FOLLOW ISLAM. WHY CANT THE WHOLE NATION WIN SOULS FOR ALLAH RATHER THAN BACKING OUT. WAKE UP. RECITING KALMA DOES NOT MAKE YOU A MUSLIM BUT MARCHING AHEAD WITH THE MISSION OF HOLY PROPHET AND WINNING SOULS FOR ISLAM AND ALLAH MAKES YOU A MOMIN. THINK , CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDES, STOP FOLLOWING MAULVIS AND EXTREMISTS. THINK IN YOUR HEART , HOW WILL U FACE THE PROPHET , ARE YOU READY FOR THAT. MAY ALLAH GUIDE MUSALMANS OF PAKISTAN AND HELP THEM TO BE MOMINS. AMEN

    MashAllah …

Pakistanis are out there trying to fight the whole world and trying to defend the honor of Prophet(SAW).

Why not start at home and stop fighting among themselves? That would take more than mere words i guess … so that means no chance if you see the track record of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

So much love for the prophet??? Or is there any at all???

Some of glaring examples of that …

When words and actions differ …HYPOCRISY

lies, cheating, corrupt practices, nepotism ……DISHONESTY

Rape, murder, prostitution, child abuse, child trafficking, smuggling, militancy, sectarian violence, robberies, women treated as commodities, children as a property ………

So much love for Prophet???? Really who are you kidding?

Bring your own house in order rather than trying to correct others …you have no right to criticize others when you yourself are neck down in corrupt and unislamic practices.

This false sense of patriotism and false love for religion will bring you nothing.

Duped. A drug addict always thinks he is most honest person in the world, but is he?

Same is the case with religion addicts …I am calling addicts because most are over-dosed with religion without understanding the basics of Islam. Mostly never care to do some research for themselves are our education system takes cares of the rest. So doped they are all along their lives. A miserable state to be in indeed.

well i know wat ur talkin abt but u know i would disagree withu till some extent ..

even i thought tht negociations shouldve held between the producers of facebook n the pakistani authorities but when i got to know tht the producer of facebook doesnt caren n it was reported by 35000 ppl but he said tht the group doesnt violate any of our terms so a man on facebook made a group draw the holocast of jews which was deleted with in 20 mins u see i know tht we r not the true believers but why r u forgettin tht we will have to start frm somewhere … n let this be the place frm where it should start ..

    2. Malick Avatar

Well i truly agree wid mahnoor!

dey hav insulted our religion! More than 35000 ppl reported it, did facebook take ny action?? I gues not!!

Then ther u go FB BOYCOT!!

takin abt da corruption nd othr things goin on in PAK, we do no tht we arent fulfilling wht our religion asks us to do, bt yet we r MUSLIMS after all! if we cant follow every thing tht our religion asks us to do doesnt mean tht we r nt MUSLIMS, nd it doesnt mean at all tht ny1 can talk or try insulting our religion!!
