Student refuses award from US Ambassador

Samad Khurram, an active member of SAC and an undergrad at Harvard Business School refuses an award from the US Ambassador to Pakistan, Anne Patterson in protest of US policies regarding the support of an illegal President Musharraf and the Mehmand Agency attack.

As the video shows that Samad Khurram is called on stage to receive the award and simply walks past the US Ambassador in defiance and to the podium where in his 30 second speech, he simply hits out on the American Government for supporting this illegal military ruler and severely condemns the recent American attack within the borders of Pakistan. It reminds me of the photograph from China when a lone man stood in front of a tank. The United States is also a similar juggernaut all muscles and no brains. They are not used to seeing people who can stand up with dignity and protest boldly and publicly.

What really make us proud that our leaders stumble over their feet trying to please the American leaders and an unknown student has the courage to defy this hegemony and chooses to stand up for his country

I personally had a telephonic discussion with him barely and hour before when he was going to the event – at that time he mentioned that ‘someone’ might not be ready to take the award and he is going to the event to support him, little did I know that the ‘someone’ was he himself. Bravo Samad you make us proud

ONLINENEWS: A Pakistani student, Samad Khurram vociferously refused his Harvard University scholarship award presented to him by the American Ambassador Anne W. Patterson, which simply awed her into a terrible confusion. The said student refused the award, which was presented in an event held by a private collage at the National Art Gallery, as a protest against the recently carried out American attacks on Mehmand Agency. The American Ambassador greatly regretted these attacks, terming them as a “terrible misunderstanding”, and stoutly refuted the notion that the student was refusing the award, maintaining that currently there were 5400 Pakistani students studying in America. The entire hall resounded with thunderous clapping for the student, who was later on restricted by management to talk to any media member.

Samad’s intention was not to insult the ambassador. His intention is to record the protest against the blind killings by USA and silence of USA backed government in Pakistan.

    >>so why not abandon Harvard?
Because if he would have abandon it, how would you come to see this protest?

The people appreciating him actually want to show true thoughts of Pakistanis & USA backed Pakistani Government.

Samad has made me proud of my country.
It’s always depressing to hear about the politicians who have looted the country and have come back to rule it.
But this gesture by a pakistani student brings back hope!

    Rizwan,

    First things first..

the ceremony wasn’t a venue to record a protest.. and if US government is killing people in Pakistan, then why are Pakistanis wearing bangles and supporting them. And for your USA backed government?? I can understand the Q league was backed by US government but what about PPP and PML N. Are all the politicians in Pakistan are backed by USA?

Yes, and if he has to protest, do it against his own “USA backed government” not the US Government. I fail to understand his achievement. It’s hypocrisy to the extreme; he’s studying at a place where he is eager to be brainwashed with the same US foreign policy which he is protesting. Have him burn his Harvard degree and make him goto some random mom and pop university in Pakistan will be an achievement that I’ll respect.

The whole nation is proud of you Sarmad. At least there is one Pakistani who has enough courage to stand against the crimes committed against Pakistan.

    Bravo.

    @IC

If you have watched vidoe, Begum General Ishfaq Pervez Kiani was standing right beside an ambessador of a country who bombed and killed soliders of very same army which is headed by her “Brave” husband.

If and (a wish) she would had shown courage, a decent protest of refusal, there wont have been a second attack on Pakistani land within next 24 hours!!!!!!

But our generals are shameless slaves of Americans.

This is the army who killed our elected Prime Minister and slaved nation while surrendering before enemy, this is the army who can not respond to our enemies but can kill countless of our own citizens to stay in government.

How can economy be better when we spend the biggest part of our budget to feed these cowards?

This protest not only made US realise what people think but also is a slap on face of US puppet generals who are suppose to protect our borders but they protect american intrests.

But if people want to show their real face to them, they impose martial laws and start killing Pakistani’s.

Assault is a means of expressing and inflicting injury.

Injury is a painful episode that causes damage physically or mentally, through deliberate or accidental infliction or expression of body move of assailant with weapon, words and behavior.

It is said that physical inflictions are easy to treat but injury caused by reserving words never escapes the mind of victim.

Similarly action speaks louder than words.

Movements serve the function of intended action towards termination of motivated desire.

A move that causes more damage than benefit is avoided although accidental happening are neglected and forgive.

If I perceive the incident under the meaningful contest of above cited definition I have no option but to conceive and curtail my thoughts and thinking process that the person has infact caused more trouble to the nation in the context of education and award of our young generation to compete at international platform.

Although at one end his desire to uplift the image is a factor but on the other hand indecent assault has created an embarrassing position for the nation.

If I shortsightedly analyze the incident there will be little difference between people who have compromised our integrity in the name of their uncontrolled lust and insane thoughts, the Taliban and Mr. Samad khurram who has indulged the whole upcoming future generation in the domain of debarring and confiscation by shuttering the door of education.

If we remove our emotional and bias mode of attitude from table of opinion, the act seems to be a very untoward behavior, and real unbecoming.

In my opinion he should have received the trophy through the hand of Patterson and then, should have requested to take action regarding his plea reflecting and endorsing his desire to revert the award if prompt actions are not initiated.

Embarrassing a representative of a nation is a serious issue, and we as nation should be apologetic to the sufferer.

””””””Embarrassing a representative of a nation is a serious issue, and we as nation should be apologetic to the sufferer””””””

    Agreed 100%.

    1. At the same time Vietnamese must apologise from US, they not only hurt Americans dream of imperialism but also put in to a state of humilation around the world.

    2. Iraqi’s must appoligise because even they failed militarily after the fall of statute of Sadam, they are still causing ” Injury is a painful episode that causes damage physically or mentally” and fighting aginst occupation.

    3. Pakistan must also appologise to Americans because 160 million people have use bad words against american killing and assasinations of leaders.

    4. African Americans (Blacks) must also appoligise as they not only hurt feelings with words (and still continue to do so)of imperialist whites but fight then with guns.

    4. American nation itself must appologies from Neocons as 80% of Americans are against Neocon agenda and inision of soverign states.

And in the end every Pakistani must appologise from American backed generals dead and alive, espacially Zia ul Haq who was very well mannered and loyal to US that he kept the foundation destruction which Iraq, Iran, Pakistan and Afghans are going through.

We are rude, ill-mannered and we are all liable to be killed just as alqueda members because we protest on our dead bodies.

    Its a bad world!

Our generals are well mannered, soft spoken and friendly, loyal and never hurt anyones feelings have not you seen Generals wife standing by US embassedor exectly as slaves stand behind masters.

Thats is the reason we are a developed and indipendent nation today, thanks to our well mannered generals.

WELDONE SAMAD WE ARE PROUD OF YOU.

  • Ali |

Thanks Samad… all my prayers and best wishes are for you.. may Allah swt shower blessings of this world and hereafter on you.. You made as proud! :)

  • Shahryar Khan |

Sarmad is pride of this nation, USA is now the SHO of World Police Station, the award he refused was nothing for the prays he is getting now

  • Pakistani |

Ironically, after having a great publicity stunt, Samad will now go back to US and and stay there to complete his stidies from Harvard. What kind of principle stand is this??

  • alias |

if pakistanis suffer cuz of USA, then they shud not study from havard. Moreover, Samad shud not continue his studies there.

Intelligent students like samad shud study in his own country and give more fame to his own country and educational institutions like the punjab university.

we shud also not 4get that musharaf, is himself responsible for what he is doing, not USA.

  • Maria |

Samad, let me tell you you weRE very brave out there. may God enlighten your mind and help you in making the right choices in life so that not only you but sleepy people like us also get to realise the ways in which we can, if not physically but verbally express our solidarity to our nation. May God gives us all strength to stand up for our country and do something against all the atrocities we have to suffer.
hoping that whatever you did will have a positive impact on you, and everyone who sees it and last but not the least our country.

There is a lot of HOORAY, BRAVO, WELL DONE, WHAT A GUY going on here… this is all fake adulation because given half a chance most of us will jump without thinking twice on the opportunity that this guy has.
I don’t blame him for any thing, I think we all do have individual responsibilities and even with his protest he should continue his education in Harvard, this is unparalleled opportunity. However, if his morals and values remain at the good place he will remain in Harvard, play the game right, make the empire believe that he is their loyal foot soldier and when he is ready he will come back (not like our last prime minister) to serve his country and deploy all that he has learned to serve his people. But alas, having said that, what will most likely happen is that the power, money and glory will intoxicate him, he will buy a big mansion and will have a big mortgage, soon after he would want to send his kids to Harvard, Yale or Oxford with hefty tuition fees, and he will say well…I just did what any body else would do! In the meantime please do go on with …..HEY SAMAD WE ARE WITH YOU MAN….

First ~ Well Done Khurram for protesting in the most literate manner for the poor people of FATA ~ May ALLAH Bless & Reward You (aamin).

Second ~ what for Khurram, we people, all 160 million are a bunch of assholes, for whom your Great Gesture does not matter at all. we are not bothered whether your future is spoiled by this, we just are clapping AND SHAMEFULLY wishing for a glimpse of the US Amabassador.
All of us in the hall had no shame, to leave the hall at your gesture, but kept on sitting there.

Third ~ as for Mr. Musharraf, I salute him for being a GREAT Solier ~ BUT as for his acts, imposing himself on Pakistan as American agent ~~~ we shall not worry, as all such people are KILLED by the Americans like a Gali Ka Kuta, such as Zia Ul Haq, and other ~ Mr. Mushasrraf time is just there.

Forth ~ will all those congratulating Khurram, MAKE SURE that he continues his studies, and extend financial support, etc. if required by Khurram ~ NO, because we all, starting with me are Pakistani assholes.

Finally ~ Bravo Khurram, I will second you ~ BRAVO.
