Why is India behaving like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)?

Guest Blog by Azhar Aslam

India today is considered by the world to be an established state. Indians think they are on the brink of acquiring super power status. LeT on the other hand is a banned organization considered to be a terrorist non-state actor. So why is it that the belligerence and jingoism Indian state and media is what would be expected of an organization like LeT. How come Indian state is behaving like a terrorist organization?

Non-state violent actors, until recently have been called mercenaries and have been used, by different powers throughout human history. British imperialism started its life in this shape and form, the most famous being the East India Company. Sir Drake , Sir Raleigh and other such “privateers,” were all non state entrepreneurs who advanced state power. Lawless violence often preceded the rule of law.

More recently after the Second World War United States has employed several non-state forces in various parts of the world to further its foreign policy agenda, often at high human and economic cost to that country and its people. Ironically Afghanistan was one such theatre. The Indian support for Baluchistan insurgency is an open secret. There is a strength of evidence for Indian and US support for ‘Jihadist’ groups operating on Pakistani territories.

After the recent Mumbai attacks it has been claimed by India ( serious evidence still pending) that a non state actor LeT has infringed its territory and perpetrated lawless violence. Indian state and its leaders are now invoking this as a reason to respond in kind. The jingoistic antipakistani stance of Indian media and politicians is being built to hysterical levels. There have been calls to respond in ‘manner of United States’.

It is most disturbing that Indian government instead of behaving in a lawful manner befitting the largest country in the region, has tried its fullest to take ”advantage” of human misery in its own country and of its own people and made this a ‘Pakistan-centric’ event. When it should have been paying attention to healing its own wounds, India has seen it as an opportunity to salt these wounds and create fresh ones. And here the state has been led by hysterical media. That tells volume about the structural stability and framework of Indian institutions claimed to represent world’s largest democracy.

Indian state wants to behave like private bullies , justifying violence , revenge and torture just like non-state terrorists. As Arjvind Rajgopal has put it ‘War has become the preferred means of practicing politics under the guise of opposing terrorism, and it is endorsed as a sacred duty’.

India seems to be following in USSR tradition and trying to create an aura of invincibility for its own ego satisfaction without considering the hundreds of millions of its citizens who are hungry, poor and destitute. Is the death of nearly 250 people, mayhem for a few days in one city, a little hurt ego more important than the teeming masses who linger in poverty. Should India not be concentrating its efforts on spending money for creating infrastructure for its own; of education, health, transport , economic opportunities. Is it worth a war?

Common sense answer is ‘No’. So Why is it that certain parts of Indian media/intellectuals/politicians triumvirate, want India to respond in an American manner? Our analysis leads us to two reasons.

First, Indian leaders and intellectuals suffer from severe inferiority complex and generational anger lingering on from British Raj days. For all the talk of rising power of India and Indians taking over the world India is desperate to declare itself as a super power one way or another. Look closely at the pattern of Indian media’s coverage. It was not designed for Indian masses. It was designed to be fed to the international audeince, in particular US and UK citizens, whose gullibility has no limits. And it is seems India has decided that its response to Mumbai attack, (which by the way was smaller in number of casualties compared to 1993 or 2006 or Gujrat, just to quote few examples) is going to declare to the world that it has turned into a regional or world super power.

India has this complex about being ‘Like America’. This is no more than a sign of serious inferiority complex and insecurity of its own identity. The most obvious sign of this inferiority complex is that the event is described as India’s 9/11, with enemy intruders committing murder and mayhem. “9/11″ has become a nationalizing mantra across the globe, an invocation to remember violence in order to garner consent for violent retaliation.

No one has even considered that what the world has turned into after the American response. It is not as if the world has become a safer or better place that this response should be imitated. The signs of being super in power are maturity and sagacity. It is to reach out and stand against terrorism of any kind and take other ( in this case smaller) countries in the region with her. It is to lead. But has India done any of it ? No sir. So forget about being super in power. India needs to set its own house in order.

This brings us to the second reason behind India’s jingoistic stance. It is related to the long standing failure of Indian state. It has failed in three important respects. First, it has failed its own secularism and failed to forge an Indian nation; second it has failed its own poor in pure economic terms; and thirdly it has failed its Indianness in its eagerness to ape the west.

Not withstanding show boys of Indian Muslims (from Abul Kalam Azaad to M J Akbar) there is the increasing discrimination in civil society and the media against Muslims. Indian state continually fails to provide justice to its minorities and masses. Then there are Dalits, Chrsitians, Bhuddists, Tamils, Naxalites. The list goes on. I quote Gopal again:’ Muslims in India have, for some time, been treated as internal enemies, through a combination of covert and overt socio-economic boycotts, state discrimination, episodes of intense political violence, and anti-terror legislation granting judicial powers to police.’

And what is Indian response to all this. For Kashmir, it blames Pakistan; for the seven sister states Bangladesh is the culprit and China takes the blame for the Naxalite insurrection. India has been in a state of perpetual war due to its ego, border disputes with all its neighbours and misplaced priorities.

Then there are pure economic issues. Here again Indian leaders ego complexes have led to failure of its own people. This failure is villainous in part and negligent to criminal extent. It is multifold and multilayered. While ‘India is shining’ for an elite minority, the masses and the land is being opened up for a new form of colonialism for Bharati and multinationals corporations, in the name of reforms and progress.

What Indians have failed to grasp or at least have shown no capacity to put any such understanding into context is that they are seen as no more than a big economic market opportunity for western nations and corporations, due to sheer numbers. Research from the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) shows that within a generation, the country will become a nation of upwardly mobile middle-class households, consuming goods ranging from high-end cars to designer clothing. In two decades the country will surpass Germany as the world’s fifth largest consumer market. It is this which attracts West; not some attitudinal shift in Anglo-Saxon thinking. If they are under any illusion that suddenly Westerns have started seeing them as equal partners, all they have to do is to sit in few pubs across middle England. That shall be more than sufficient to clear such delusions of grandeur.

Consequently in the name of progress, poor are marginalized. Cities suffer from severe economic and social segregation. The slums for the poor are demolished and ghettos moved around. Muslim and Dalits in India are overwhelmingly concentrated in such ghettos and, in episodes of Hindu nationalist violence, have been the principal victims of assaults. It is not India shining. It is Bollywood shining and like tinsel town it is more razz matazz than substance . The Justice Sachar Committee, in 2006, reported that ‘the condition of Muslims had deteriorated to such a point that they were worse off than the untouchable caste, which has traditionally occupied the lowest rung of Indian society’. In some cases, Muslims are ostracized to the point of social death.

And for all the talk of famed reforms by the present Indian Prime Minister in early 1990s, when he was a finance minister, it was more a case of India being at the right place at the right time by sheer luck than any planned strategic goal achievement. Indian progress owes much to certain historical events converging fortuitously at the right time. The collapse of USSR forced India into balance payment crisis, forcing Rao and Singh’s hand to deliver economic reforms where by Licence Raj was ended. At about the same time seeds of globalization were being sown while West was recovering form the recessions of early 1990s. The scores of English speaking graduates of IIT were now suddenly available at cheap labour adding impetus to Indian preeminence as outsourced markets. Western corporations were looking for cutting their costs and they started outsourcing. Indian diaspora played its part. Manufacturing was outsourced to China and IT services to India. Subsequently ore reforms followed and FDI increased as western corporations themselves sought a slice of the market.

This brings us to the third Indian failure. The fact is that Indian middle class is fast losing its ‘Dhesi’ values and the South Asian culture is being undermined by the still persistent and widely prevalent ‘ Ghulam Zahniat’. For all the slogans of ‘new super power’, ‘largest democracy’, ‘big and powerful country’ etc, the Indianness is fast ebbing away.

Most middle class Indians feel more proud to speak, act and live and display the consumerist western lifestyle than any indigenous South Asian, Indian or Baharti lifestyle. Their tastes are indistinguishable from those of prosperous young Westerners – high-end luxury cars, designer clothes, maids and full-time cooks, and regular vacations, abroad.

One sign of this is the elites in Mumbai assuming that they too must respond “like America’’ and asking where their Rudy Giuliani was ? The irony is that the sign of being developed and civilized in India is no longer the welfare of its general masses in economic and social terms but ‘ State terrorism and war’.

Like Pakistan Television is being watched increasingly in India and nearly two thirds of the population has now access to television. And it is very profitable. Consequently there is intense competition in news sector and live TV. Many of 24 hour channels are owned by transnational media corporations. And Like Pakistan a disproportionate number of prime time viewers tune into news channels (perhaps due to the age old Subcontinental taste for politics). Consequently this was the first attack that was being telecast and watched live. It seems that even the planners of these attacks knew this and planned to take full advantage of the global audience on offer. The death of V P Singh and eight people in Tamil Nadu rains from 26 to 29th November went nearly unmentioned. To quote ‘They died unmourned and even unmentioned on the explosive screens that kept millions enthralled’.

As some Indian pundits have asked that while media fixated on ‘who’ and ‘how’ for these attacks, ‘why’ was completely ignored. It is the media which seems to be leading the response of Indian State rather than the other way round. In other words, the corporate agendas of the media owners has dictated the response of Indian rulers and Indian state. The proof of sympathy to the upwardly mobile middle class urbanites it seems is war with Pakistan at the cost of teeming poor and destitute billions. As Gopal points out that the ‘the media in India is only nominally public. …it is elite who own the space and dictate the terms of its discourse. In the recent attacks hardly any attention was paid to the railway station where sixty people were killed. TV crews stayed focused on the luxury hotels, where “People Like Us” were affected.’ To quote J S Raman ‘The elite of Mumbai and elsewhere, mourning the fall of the elegant Taj, have been trying to sound tougher than even the politicians of the Parivar (the Far Right “family”).’

We thus see that these three fundamental failures of Indian State that have either incapacitated the senses of Indian State and its rulers and they are being unwillingly led by the media or they have simply become complicit in the dangerous egocentric brinksmanship regardless of the cost to people of Subcontinent. That the complex to ‘be big’ and ‘super power’ is fuelling this on cannot be doubted. But the world is watching. And India must take a note. The very status it craves for more than anything else is under threat due to its childish and amateurish actions. The more it acts like ‘Non-State’ actor the more it risks its status in the comity of nations.

Jairam. Let us first control our words, abuses and foul language. we are all educated and we can discuss in a civilised manner. Let me be clear. I am from India. Please have no doubts about it. You cant thrust your views on anyone. Everyone has the right to live his/her life, as they want to. This is actual democracy. Everyone has the right to have his own religion, but telling someone, you are wrong about his religion, is uncalled for. You follow your own religion as you wish to and let them follow their own. But please for God's sake, dont try to find faults in other religion. This is wrong. I would request all the people on the blog, let us go beyond religion and see what both we can do to uplift our poor people, which unfortunately is the same in India and Pakistan. Why cant we talk constructive and healthy, which makes us closer to one another ? Why put religion always first and close our eyes for mutual love, friendship and brotherhood amongst us ? There is a huge potential, waiting to be explored, beyond religion. Love, affection, brotherhood, emotions, our common culture and heritage. Our ancestors and the land we belong to. Our land is so pious and beautiful. Our nature is not western. We have common values, ethos and family bonding, which the westerners envy. Why shatter all this for religion ? i hope i am not lecturing, but these are my emotions, which are coming thru my keyboard and reaching you all. Cant we co-exist ? Or we should keep on fighting on and on…We are being fooled all the time by vested interests in the name of religion, caste and region. Remember our grandfathers shared the same land before 1947. If they co-existed for centuries, respecting each other, why we should not ? Boundaries and borders are created by men but our hearts beat in the same manner, whenever there is a problem in the family. We weep, cry and feel joyous for the same reasons. e.g. family. Why not discard this, once and for all and talk Peace and only peace. Our respective govts.will laugh, if they read our comments of hatred for each other. That is what they want!. That's what we are giving them on a platter. Please stop discussing religion as is too private a matter to be made naked. If you think, i am wrong. I will stop writing in future, I am trying to build bridges. Please dont break them in the name of religion. My love to you all. olease excuse me, if i have exceeded my limits. The keyboard is typing automatically, what i am feeling now. Let us rise and shine as good friends and fail the plan of our respective govts.

A Practical Advice to All (INDIANS AND PAKISTANIS)

I am a Indian, but do not believe that common Man of Pakistan has any contribution to Terror Acts in Mumbai….Similarly, no common Indian Man is behind Lahore Bomb Blasts and NWFP aggravation.

Its the individual Government's Failure that is responsible for such events.

    The Logic:

    – None of the Indian or Pakistani Middle and Lower class have time or Resources to invest in Aggression or Belligerent Strategies against each other.

    – Both the economies want to do better after a long American and Russian Interference in State Affairs.

    – Its not the Kashmir problem that is the Issue, its just the reason to militarize further aided by Arms Companies from France, Israel, China, Korea, US and Russia, disguising themselves behind the apparent Regional Conflict

    – Both Pakistan and India have been suffering from inconclusive confrontations lead by International exposure of the Region

    NOW SOME WORDS OF ADVICE

    – Conflicts between India and Pakistan may have been in Indian Favor, but the damage was severe and none of the countries can afford it right now in wake of recent developments in economies.

    – No one really gains by spreading hatred amongst masses…Look at the Cricket Fans who were largely disappointed by the indirect influence of Political Policies.

    – Common Man's Security is the Responsibility of the Govt and not the Neighbor State.

    – If we want to grow, we need to grow together and Rise above Extremism and Fundamentalism- which has become a Truly Profitable Business of Arms Companies, Extremists and their Allies…Not in Favor of Common Man's Welfare

    – Govts has been successful in hiding their respective failures in improving Health,Infrastructure,Eduction and other matters of National Importance…Behind Militarization and War Handling

-India and Pakistan are two Strong Countries Now.

Is it necessary to test the strength against each other and drag ourselves back by 10 years ?

Common Interests of Citizens are still Education, Development, Employment, Health and certainly not Wars.

Both India and Pakistan have the potential to ward off the International Influence and Disguised Policies by uniting together.

    Just one Question: Ask Yourself

Who gains by bringing Extremism of the other country in Front of the poor state of Internal Affairs ?

Wise people of Both countries know what we have lost in all these years of useless conflicts.

………..Trillions of Dollars on Military Expense that could have bought Food for 10 years, Thousands of Human Lives that would have prospered by now and lack of attention to the Hard Hitting Issues !!!

WAKE UP BOTH BROTHERS…WE HAVE GAINED FREEDOM TOGETHER……HAVE SAME HISTORY……SIMILAR FOOD, LANGUAGE,PEOPLE,RELIGIONS,CULTURES !!

Mumbay Terror; who are the beneficiaries?

Who are the beneficieries of Mumbai Terror?

    Lashker or 'BJP'!

1-Unlike other terrorists, Terrorists in Mumbay has not demanded anything? They don't demand release of their co-prisoners nor demanded money… why?? what was their target then?

2-Unlike other islamic Jehadis with beard and turbans, why Mumbai terrorists came with strange look – they wore jeans and T-shirts; clean-shaved and no turbans nor any sign of muslims terrorists we normally watch on media?

3-And the Terrorists attackers did nothing specifically for western, even Israelis, it was sure if they were Jehadists!

4-Beer drinking terrorists; Jehadi are non-alcoholic,
however Mumbai Terrorists goes to the cafe and drinks beer before they start firing??

5-Mumbai terrorists (as shown by media) had close similarities with RSS cadres: Mumbai terrorist wearing an yellow band on his right hand as RSS cadres wears normally (see pictures of Kasab).

6-Mumbai terrorists immediately find their targets by killing ATS leaders [Hemant Karakare, CP Ashok Kamthe & Vijay Salskar) in first 15 minutes of the attacks of their terror? Karakare was wearing bullet proof jacket , he was fired right on his neck!!! he was in a crowded place , so it was not easy to find and identify him. how they got so much information ????????? why they targeted him!!!!!!

How and why they so specific the clearly chose ATS
leaders? And the terrorist immediately ran away, why? & who was that terrorist?

(ATS was investigating about BJP involvment in terrorism, General Prohait , Samjhoota Express Blasts)
    http://www.ocnus.net/artman2/publish/Defence_Armshttp://www.sahilnews.org/english/news.php?catID=v

7-Only one terrorist caught lively (?), all others killed as in every encounter in recent past?

8-Mumbai terrorist are very clear about their targets, they are well experienced their hide abouts in Taj and other places?

9-Prime Minister, Sonia & LK Advani visits Mumbai, but no clues or no claims about ISI or Pakistan.. However No1 terrorist, Gujarat CM Modi hurry-up to Mumbai and declares that Pakistan is behind the attack without any doubt!

Note: no other CMs goes to Mumbai.. And he offers rewards to every military men killed of 1 crore unlike PM and LK Advani? Even he offers aid to MahaRastra!

10-Media was widely reporting that there were IDs of terrorists recovered which shows Malaysian and Mauritious IDs however such references disappeared once Modi's arrival!

11-The timing of Mumbai terror is well planned, just before state elections! (so who will take beneficent ? lashkar-e-taiba or BJP?)

12-We are told that they came from Pakistan by sea? Indian military in boards sea were sleeping?? We are told they came by speed boats? is it possible to travel so long on such boat?

13-It took contineous 60 hours to stop the terrorism! and most of terrorists killed!!!!!

    14)Karkare's wife declines 'Modi's compensation' offer http://www.expressindia.com/latest-news/Karkares-
Mumbai The family of slain Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare has declined Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's offer of monetary help, sources said on Saturday.

Modi on Friday visited the residences of Karkare and encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar, who were killed while fighting militants on Wednesday night.

Modi also announced that his government would give Rs 1 crore to Maharashtra for the families of policemen killed in the attacks. Karkare's widow and other family members have declined Modi's offer, the sources said.

I think the admittance of Mr. Gilani that Ajmal Kasab is indeed a Pakistani proves it all…it proves indian media to be correct…it proves dat the indian govt was not playing the blame game and proves dat as usual pakistan blamed india for everything but had to admit the truth eventually……and i hope that it also proves that whatever "Mr. Bhanu prakash sharma"(so called) said is crap…

den to i will try to contradict all of mr bhanu prasad's stupid and illogical points….

    1. I guess jihadis never demand for money or release of their jihadi frends…unless the jihadi in prison is at a very imp post…

    2. just because they were not dressed like orthodox muslims, u cant say dat they were not muslims or pakistani…dont tell me dat no one in pakistan is casually dressed…specially these terrorists were really young…

    3. they specially aimed western tourist and israeli jews…nariman house where they carried out their brutality only had jews living in it…

    4. so are u saying dat every muslim follows the non-alcoholic principle and u don get alcohol in pakistan…

5.first of all they were too young to b a part of RSS cadre and if they were a part of it den y wud they wear a yellow band which they normaly wear…i mean they cant be so dumb dat they will give the world such a big clue when they don want to reveal their identity…

6.dis point is the worst point.U said dat Mr Hemant karkare,Ashok kamte and vijay salskar were killed in the first 15mins of terror and they were in a crowd so how did the terrorists recognise them…bullshit…this happened a lot after the attack started. secondly all three of them were in a police jeep(qualis) and the terrorist while running saw the qualis and opened fire without even knowing whos in it because they wanted the car to run away from there…we have seen the recorded videos showing the whole incident…so don spread such shit…

7.i guess u shud have tried to catch all the terrorists alive…its not easy when the opposite person also have weapons…atleast one terrorist is caught alive…they should be appreciated for it…

8.anybody who wants to give result to such a big massacre wud obviously not come without any planning…they were trained for more than three years..so obviously they must have acquired all the possible information about the TAJ hotel…

9.i guess Mr Narendra modi was not wrong if he said dat pakistan is involved…was he? even Mr Gilani has proved Mr Modi to be right…i hope you are updated with the fact dat pakistan has officially announced dat the terrorists were indeed pakistanis….

    10. To hell with malaysian Id's…when pakistan has admitted it there is no debate about this point…

    11.co-incidence…does not prove anything…

12.i think they were not on a vacation dat they wud think about their comfort on the boat…and by the way pakistan has also admiited the fact that the terrorists had left from karachi and have also caught the shopkeeper of karachi from where the terrorists had bought the Yamaha motor to run the boat…

    13. so what…i guess u dont know that there were hostages in the hotel and our brave soldiers tried saving all of them…and all the hostages complemented indian cops and soldiers for their bravery and professionalism which they showed by tackling the situation brilliantly.

    14. Even I wud not take compensation for the loss of my loved one…that wud be insult to him and his bravery…

After reading the article, I am reminded of Zaid Hamid, a self styled Defense Analyst of Pak who accuses India even when a child has diarrhea in Pak. He believes Pak is so strong on the crumbles fed by USA, IMF that Pak can take over Israel, India and US together. The picture of Pak is GLOOM and during such times, such articles provide morale boost. Nothing wrong, go ahead. We are very secured in our identity and especially no Paki can undermine that for us. FYI, ur own ministers have owned up that 26/11 was indeed planned on Pak soil. (Also today they said there is lot of similarity between SL team attacks and 26/11.) Now u guys will go ahead and accuse Zardari/Gilani for butt kissing USA govt. Whats new??

Vaneet, I have read ur comments and frankly I am so proud of u. U depict a true picture of tolerant secular Indian. Inspite of so much abuse by these Pakis, u keep ur cool and stick to ur "love spreading point". Unlike this farrah. I read her comments on ur article. She supports and now poops on other blogs against India. True Paki, eh?

But dear I dont agree with u. I dont symphatise with Pakis (neither do they need it, completely aware of it)They call Masood Azhar a freedom fighter. What else proof do u want that they deserve whats happening with them. Dr. says that Islam gives u right to Jihad against Indian USa British forces. Imagine if a literate person says this, can u blame an illiterate fool?? Jis thali main khate usmain mootte harami saale. USA ke tukdon pe zinda hai and hate US. When Azhar Alam asks India to introspect, what has he to say about some introspection expected of Pakistan itself ? Is it not reaping exactly what it sowed some years ago? Your own people set up by your own establishment against some other nation are now targeting your guests in your country ! Can anything be more shameful?

As for India, yes it is time to sit and ponder…its time to sit and ponder over how to tackle this paki nuisance once and for all.

Once India neutralises this problem, it will have enough spare resources and time to deal with its developmental issues and take a quantum leap in overall progress…inshah allah.

But who is this Azhar Alam by the way? A Talibani, an LeT sleeper cell or what?

12 naked Manipuri women carrying banners which screamed in Halloween font: “Indian Army rape us”, “Indian Army take our flesh”. According to reports, as the women stood outside the gates of Assam Rifles, the Manipur police, for 45 minutes, Army and the paramilitary forces were alert but too shamed and shocked to do anything.

This unique protest, organised by a group of Manipuri women in Imphal on July 15, 2004, sent shockwaves across the nation.

These women were protesting against the custodial rape and killing of 32-year-old Thangjam Manorama who had been picked up by the paramilitary troops on the night of July 10 on the suspicion of having links with militants. When her bullet-riddled body bearing signs of torture was found the next day, not far from her home, it triggered a wave of anger.

The Manipuri women were particularly enraged over the brutalities perpetrated by the security forces on a defenceless woman.

They came out on the streets, sat in dharna, called for a state-wide strike but their cries were falling on deaf ears. That’s when they decided to do something drastic.

Defying prohibitory orders, a dozen middle-aged women assembled outside the Assam Rifles headquarters at Kangla Gate and stripped. This was unprecedented.

    Mass Murder in Kashmir

"Whether or not one agrees with President Clinton's policy in Kosovo, we went there to stop the `ethnic cleansing' of the Kosovars by the Serbian government. Yet we have averted our glance from a similar campaign throughout India , a situation the Indian Supreme Court described as `worse than a genocide.' This ethnic cleansing has taken the lives of over 250,000 Sikhs since 1984, over 200,000 Christians in Nagaland since 1947, over 60,000 Muslims in Kashmir since 1988, and thousands upon thousands of Dalits, Assamese, Manipuris, Tamils, and other minority peoples."

    Al-Qaida & India – Strange Bed Partners

In response to the unprecedented attack on September 11 on American soil, U.S. entered Afghanistan with gun blazing last October, the end of Taliban and their ‘guest’, the criminal terrorist organization Al-Qaida was imminent. Al-Qaida immediately went into hiding in the mountains, US. Led anti-terror coalition followed them leaving no place for them to run.

Those who tried to run into mountains areas near Pakistan were met with U.S. forces and heavy Pakistani border patrol. Pakistan, the frontline state in global war on terrorism, relaxed border rules allowing U.S. forces to pursue running Al-Qaida across its border.

The first setback to anti-terrorism coalition was letting go of tens and thousands of Taliban and Al-Qaida fighters by the ‘Northern Alliance’, the pro-India group of warlords the coalition relied on to topple Taliban. The Taliban quickly dispersed themselves making it impossible to distinguish them from Northern Alliance or ordinary Afghans. However, the small band of hard core Al-Qaida vowed to continue fighting.

The ruthlessness of Al-Qaida is evident from the fact that a band of captured Al-Qaida members over powered and killed 42 Pakistan Army men who were hauling them away after their capture. Pakistan has lost many more of its soldiers in helping fight back Al-Qaida than all the other members of global anti-terrorism coalition. Taliban and Al-Qaida is no friends of United States or Pakistan, although both helped establish Taliban as a unifying and stabilizing force in Afghanistan after the Russian departure.

The plans of Taliban and Al-Qaida for Pakistan were no different than the Indian plans. That is to destabilize and take over Pakistan. India found Al-Qaida a helpful ally in this regard. The increasing number of religiously motivated incidents & killings among others were already taking place in the entire Pakistan long before September 11 terrorist attack on the United States. The Pakistan Government was scrambling with controlling this menace. It was evident that a small developing country constraint with resources will have a difficult time in its efforts to curb terrorism. Hence, it was not a surprise when Pakistan welcomed the coalition to fight against a mutual enemy.

However, when by December 2001 it appeared that Al-Qaida had no place to hide and no place to run, help to Al-Qaida came from a strange corner – India. Rushing its forces to Pakistan border after a foiled attack on its parliament. India was not able to provide any evidence although was quick to blame it on Pakistan. India knew its actions would impede Pakistan’s ability to help fight terrorism as well as throw the whole region into nuclear war threat. This Indian created distraction provided vital time for Al-Qaida to regroup.

Pakistan stood fast and refused to move its forces away from Afghanistan border. India continued to build pressure on Pakistan to a point where she was shelling Pakistan’s towns and village along the border and killing civilians daily. After two weeks of consecutive cross border shelling and severe threats to its sovereignty Pakistan has finally decided to move it forces away from Afghan border bringing a halt in pursuit of Al-Qaida.

However, this is exactly in accordance with the Indian plans. Moving forces from the border is likely to provide opportunity to the fleeing Al-Qaida to infiltrate into Pakistan and continue with its plans to destabilize Pakistan.

In its zest to destroy Pakistan, India has embarked on a very dangerous road of supporting and helping Al-Qaida, a known terrorist organization. Next time there is a terrorism attack on US by Al-Qaida, India for one will be directly responsible for it and must be ready to bear the consequences.

The post September 11 Indian designs — I

    Asad Omar Cheema

The events of September 11, 2001, are etched in the whole world’s mind and every understanding human would have a vivid picture in his mind, thanks to the media, of the horrific and horrendous loss of live and property perpetuated by the hijacked aircraft slamming into the world Trade Centre buildings and the Pentagon.

The fallout of the devastation has literally dumped billions down the drain.

The loss of thousands of priceless lives can never be gauged or explained away by anyone.

The economic loss, the fall in stock markets, the loss to the airline industry, the increase in the recession and the loss of thousands of jobs would have far reaching effects, more than what most are evaluating or professing now.

The geo-political situation in the unipolar world has started shifting and I estimate that in a year’s time from now, we would see a new world order, which very few can foresee now and others have not been able to look beyond the immediate future.

Pakistan, due to its geo-strategic location and geo-political situation has suddenly became an essential requirement of the in its “war against terror”.

This situation, almost God sent, has put Pakistan back in the headlines and a key player in the whole game.

Thanks to the pragmatic and courageous decision by President Musharraf, Pakistan has been accepted by the whole world as a moderate, tolerant and progressive Islamic country.

The extremists or fanatics have sidelined and the whole population stands firmly behind the president sans a very minor or negligible group of ignorant religious zealots, who have been gaining both monetarily and politically for throwing in their lot with the Taliban and have lost their self esteem.

This American war on terror is far from over, however, the base camp of Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaeda has been uprooted from Afghanistan and most of these Taliban have melted away in the local populace, from where they could re-emerge.

The headlines of the major media channels have gradually started covering other stories in the world also.

This approaching end of the war in Afghanistan had been very heavy on the Indian mind since the middle of October.

Before I go further, let me explain the Indian mindset and what has been going on in there since September 11.

The Indians had been investing heavily, both in monetary terms and politically, in its design to undermine Pakistan in almost every field since the last decade or so.

Their strategy was to sideline Pakistan in as many aspects as possible to project it as a failed state.

Economically, they were trying their best to wrest all the markets from us in the world, where they could compete with our exports.

The Indian government gave incentives to their exporters to undercut Pakistani products everywhere in the world and promised up to 25% subsidy to all exporters to sell at a lesser price than the cost price and be compensated by the Indian government.

Politically, they had been trying hard to get Pakistan declared a terrorist state and get the condemnation of the world.

They were gloating at Pakistan being strangled by the IMF and getting crushed under its insurmountable debt.

They were talking of further sanctions against Pakistan for having gone nuclear, being a non-democratic country and one, which abetted terrorism military.

Since the unpleasant shock of being caught off guard in Kargil, they had gone to improve their arsenals of all three services to have a clout, which it found itself seriously lacking then.

Externally, since the demise of the erstwhile Soviet Union – its trusted ally and benefactor, India had been almost shamefacedly harping the tunes that the USA preferred to hear and been trying very hard to get as close to America as possible, primarily to be accepted as a regional power and also to edge out Pakistan of any favour worth the name it had with the USA since the imposed sanctions and to literally get it cornered as a failed state in all international world forums.

They even managed to oust Pakistan from the Commonwealth for having a military government led by their nemesis of the Kargil days.

They were succeeding quite well in their grand strategic plans and were quite happy with the progress they were making for having carved out a very special relationship with the USA in the days of President Clinton.

Then came September 11 and suddenly they were having a nightmare, which was worse in reality.

The Americans needed Pakistan to assist them in their war against terror.

We were suddenly a frontline state and the closest partner with the USA in the coalition of the whole world against terrorism.

The almost failed state, which was about to default on its loan repayment schedule and was at the mercy of all the financial institutions of the world, was being given a chance to recover itself with rescheduling and write-offs worth millions of dollars.

This cozying up of relations of Pakistan must have sent shivers down the Indian government spine.

The Indians were very fast in realising that Pakistan would gain from this new situation and were quick to offer everything they could to the USA so that the war against terror was fought from their soil and they hoped that the border would be their western border instead of the Durand Line in America’s war against terror.

Suddenly, a nation which used to have so must of chauvinism that they would not even allow a foreign multi-nation commercial company to have independent stakes or base in India, were offering their ports, airfields and what ever else was required to the Americans.

But they were really disheartened when their offers were not accepted by the USA and they found the new relationship forming between the USA and Pakistan as very distasteful.

The Indian crooked psyche started working overtime from then onwards.

They put their best minds together and came up with a policy to kill two birds with one stone.

That was to sour the relationship between Pakistan and the USA with anything which would go against the American mindset, which at the moment is fight against terrorism and religious extremists like Osama and his Al Qaeda network.

They worked out a plan similar to one they had hatched immediately after the Kargil episode, which was, to blame the Pakistan government for abetting terrorists and that the Kashmiri freedom fight was an act of terrorism by the mujahideen.

They had some loose ends left unattended since December 1999 due to their own “faux pas” or shoddy planning and they had watered down the whole affair then to avoid further embarrassment which they are now trying to tie together.

The Frontier Post, Updated on 3/10/2002 10:43:59 AM

The post September 11 Indian designs — II

    Asad Omar Cheema

The Indians had staged and managed a drama of hijacking one of their own airline IC-814 from Katmandu.

This aircraft had gone to Amritsar, Lahore, Dubai and finally to Kandhar, where the hijacking was “resolved”.

They had then released two Indian occupied Kashmiri natives and a jailed Pakistani, who had been under detention for almost two years without being charged of any offence.

Maulana Azhar, whom they now say as being a terrorist, was lying in their jail for having entered India with no papers.

At that time, he was a religious leader who was inciting the Kashmiris to stand for their right of self-determination.

The masked hijackers, who were paid Indian intelligence operative, after enacting the whole drama, returned the next day in an Indian aircraft sent to collect the crew and passengers of the hijacked aircraft.

The Indians are now recapping about this maulana as being behind the Indian parliament attack of 13 December.

Now after two years since that hijacking, the Indians new plan to implicate Pakistan is becoming clear.

One thing that has always been very clear is that Indians are masters of deceit and Machiavellian schemes.

They had been enacting all kind of dramas at the opportune times when they could derive political mileage out of such incidents, where even killing its own citizens has never mattered to them, as long as they can convey or bring home a point to their advantage; they even staged and massacred almost three dozen Sikhs, just before President Clinton’s visit to Agra, but luckily the would be perpetuators were caught by the locals and identified as members of the Indian Border Security Force.

Such dastardly acts can be expected from the Indians anytime they need an excuse to get one up.

The Indians have been losing a lot of sleep since the September 11 incident on how to implicate Pakistan into anything that would distant us from our new found friendship with the USA.

The ‘in’ word is terrorism and that is what the Indians are trying to do since then. They want the freedom struggle in Kashmir to be put under the heading of terrorism and the best way is to blame Pakistan for assisting terrorist, thereby proving to the USA and the world that we are sending terrorist to Kashmir, therefore, we should be equated with countries which harbour them.

To paint the freedom struggle in Kashmir as terrorism, the Indians first engineered the attack on the Kashmir Assembly building in Srinagar itself, and conveniently made sure that no one was left alive to tell the true tale of who was behind it.

All Kashmiri freedom fighters denied any hand in such cowardly acts.

The Indians were shamefully rejected by the world.

Then, they tried the melodrama of an aircraft hijacking, and started blaming Pakistan about being the mastermind behind it, before the aircraft had even landed at Lucknow.

Now the Indians are trying to go further with their deceitful attempts by painting the 13 December attack on their parliament as an act of terrorism abetted by Pakistan.

The Indian media had started harping on this whole incident as being the handicraft of ISI and jaish-e-Muhammadi even before the shooting had stopped in the parliament.

This was a similar pattern as they had done during the IC-814 hijacking, when the Indian media had started showing the demands of the hijackers almost twelve hours before they had talked to any one at all about their demands, and surprisingly, the media had read their mind, before they had opened their mouths.

As the handouts had already been passed to the media by the agencies which had masterminded the whole episode, similarly, this time also.

Jaish-e-Muhammadi and Lashkar-e-Taiba were already on the mat, while the so allied terrorist were still alive and kicking around the parliament building.

The freedom fighters have always restricted themselves inside or outside Kashmir.

The unsuccessful attempts by the Indians to taint them terrorist have always boomeranged.

This war mongering is basically to put pressure on Pakistan to desist from even providing diplomatic, political and moral support to the Kashmiri freedom fighters.

So where are we going from here.

Let us look at what is the Indian strategy now after seeing the failure of their earlier attempts at wooing the world to see Kashmiri freedom fight as terrorism.

They have embarked on a highly irresponsible and costly gamble of threatening us with war and other dire consequences for not toeing their line.

All the rhetoric by the Indians and putting all the troops and other war machinery into action to threaten us would actually backfire for them soon.

Their war mongering and trying to browbeat Pakistan into submission has failed.

They are naïve enough to think that Pakistan would give up its principled stand of favouring the Kashmir struggle for freedom because of fear or awe of the Americans.

The Indian strategy is to put so much pressure of going to war so that we would buckle in and accede to all their demands.

The fact is that they are having too myopic a view because of their own short sightedness President Musharraf has taken the challenge very bravely and while vying for peace through dialogue has mobilised our own armed forces to be ready for any eventuality, including war.

So will we have a war soon? Let us see the perspectives of the Americans, Indians and Pakistan about the whole affair and the success expected militarily or otherwise to each.

The Americans obviously do not want a war because it presently needs Pakistan for its war in Afghanistan and does not want India to sabotage its own plans in the region.

Secondly, it does not want any cracks in the coalition as both India and Pakistan are on the same side of the fence.

Thirdly, they know that the present government of President Musharraf has managed to draw a line and differentiate between the extremist and religious zealots who are in very less numbers and the general public, the majority of which favours his policy.

If a war breaks out, the dividing line would vanish and the whole nation would unite in its fight against India, thereby leaving the Afghan war in the lurch and having a jihadi population of almost 140 million people to deal with especially when these would have fairly potent conventional and nuclear arsenals.

Lastly, if the present showdown leads to a war, the American operations and their people in Pakistan, including over 1000 personnel in Jacobabad and other associated places would be in danger to getting caught in the crossfire, which is the last thing the Americans would want.

What does India gain or lose in this confrontation.

The only thing that they think they would gain is that they will manage to break our will and see us backing off.

    Here they are sadly mistaken.

The other extreme is their present mindset that they can win a war with Pakistan.

What would be the political objective of such a war? To take some part of Pakistan’s territory and then to negotiate a deal in their favour? They are sadly mistaken in this premise.

And if they have a military objective, their planners are grossly overestimating themselves.

The reason being that while they think that can use their armour to wrest any chunk of land in area known as south of Sutlej, they do not realise that they would also have to forsake some of very vital territory somewhere else, which would be of more value to them when in our hands.

If they believe that they can mount a 1.3 ratio in their favour for an offensive to succeed, they would have to de-induct troops from Kashmir, which is highly unlikely.

If they believe that they can succeed in Kashmir, they know how difficult it is to fight in snow covered terrain and that too when the local population is hostile to the troops there.

What advantage they had in East Pakistan in 1971 about the local population and immediate access will not be available to them this time.

Ajmal kasab and other zealots involved in the mumbai attack have been recognized as pakistanis…even the pakistani govt has admitted that they were indeed pakistanis(after a lot of denials though)but they were compelled to admit the truth eventually….so how is india supporting terror in any way….even the pakistani govt has not blamed india that it has links with al-Qaida…so r u a part of al-Qaida that u know all the facts about it and no one else in the world….u've just thrown out whatever came in your mind, with no evidence, no reference or whatsoever….

VHP be declared terrorist: US forum

    By Our Correspondent

SAN FRANCISCO, March 5: American Muslim groups have denounced the massacre of Muslims in the Indian state of Gujrat and urged the US administration to declare the Indian extremist organizations as terrorists.

The Pakistan American Democratic Forum (PADF), a leading organization of American Muslims, in a statement said the massive killing of Muslims by Hindu extremists is another example of terrorist activities launched by Hindu groups.

"The massacre of Muslim civilians in Gujrat gives credence to the PADF call on the US administration to declare the Hindu extremists organizations, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Shiv Sena as terrorist groups," the PADF statement concluded.

United Muslims of America, another organization of Americans Muslims, has supported the PADF's call for banning the VHP.

The UMA said: "Since Sept 11 event, many Muslim humanitarian organizations in US have been banned on the suspicion that they were funding some terrorist activities abroad. While Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), an extremist Hindu organization that has branches in USA and is responsible for many anti-Muslim and anti-Christian pogroms in India, including the one going on in state of Gujarat now, is free to operate and fund its terrorist activities in India."
