Shministim – are 16, 17, 18 and 19 year old students studying in the 12th grade – these are a new breed of conscientious objectors in Israel and right now they are taking a stand. They believe in a better, more peaceful future for themselves and for Israelis and Palestinians, and they are refusing to join the Israeli army. They’re in jail, holding strong against immense pressure from family, friends and the Israeli government.
The Shministim are reaching out to people to let the Israeli government know people are watching, and that we support their courage. They’re hoping to receive hundreds of thousands of postcards to be delivered to the Israeli Minister of Defense. Especially now-while bombs rain down on Gaza and we are reminded that when the soldiers say no, there will be no more deaths.
I, as a Pakistani Muslim, fully condemn this recent offensive by the Israeli army on Gaza, but passionately believe that the world must quickly search for a peaceful solution in this half century war, it is heartening to note that young Israelis are standing up against their government to condemn this brutal offensive. The Shministim’s have my full support in their struggle to attain peace in their region – Do go to December18th.org website to sign their petition
