A day back around 11:30 at night on Feb 6th AAJ TV was suddenly taken off the air in the regions of Rawalpindi and Islamabad and according to AAJ it was blocked up to Chakwal 60 km away. Live with Talat was due to air a discussion with Nusrat Javeed while some sources say that the shut down could also have been due to Aaj live broadcast of Nawaz Sharif’s Lahore address in which he accused that the militants had shot down the army helicopter.
AP Reports that prior to the broadcast, Musharraf’s spokesman Rashid Quereshi had advised Aaj that it should not allow Javed to appear on any of its programs, Aslam Dogar, an assignment editor for the station.
The international media rights group Reporters Without Borders accused state-run Pakistan Television of bias against parties opposing Musharraf. The media group noted Musharraf had promised fair and free elections when Pakistanis choose a new parliament Feb. 18. “The absence of fairness in the coverage provided by the only national terrestrial broadcast channel shows that this is not yet the case,” the group said in a statement Wednesday
There is a ban on live broadcasts under the new PEMRA code of conduct that all the restored channels either signed, or implicitly agreed to adhere to. We must also not forget the explicit warning issued by caretaker information minister Nisar Memon’s to all media outlets to strictly adhere to the PEMRA code or face Nov 3rd like consequences while addressing a gathering in Hyderabad on Feb 2
This screen capture shows a repeat telecast yesterday of an older episode originally aired on Wednesday. A caption ticker informs its viewers that Live with Talat is temporarily off-air.

I still wonder whether its the right way to go…shutting down tv channels…does throw a bad impression about the government but the way people come out on the streets some times…I think our nation is not ready for free media…
I do not think shutting down TV or gagging media helps anyone except the dictators (that also temporarily). Open and free debates of what is going wrong with the country is the way to come to a common ground. People will mature if we let them but unfortunately that is not in the interest of many corrupt politicians, army generals and the so called elites of the country. I hope and pray that some day soon we really put Pakistan first and not our own self.
yes pakistanis are ready for free media and democracy. If not why is this differet for India?? i think we are quiet alike. if they can be a democracy then why cant we???
It is not the question of whether we are ready or not ready the question is whether we can live without it or not? I think we can not live in this world without considerable amount of media freedom.
So let us not turn into a fascist state and let media destroy our moral fabric free of charge. But with it will come one blessing and that is some sane opinion which will help educate us masses.
give me an example of one tv channel in the whole world which damages the image of its own country and brainwashes the people towards hatered for the nation and there own home land.
Cmon on guys even islam says that think before u speak and not to hurt the feelings of others but we to sell our channels r f***king PAKISTAN.
every channel that wrongly asscuses pakistan and its assets should be banned .
channels now r saying that they tell the truth and nothing but the truth and in telling this truht they r losing there sense
quran says that it is better to lie than to tell the truth if it saves two brohters from fighting but these channels wants 16 cores people to fight and we morons do fight
I agree with “Malik Aman”. I would never tell My one friend that the other was saying “This this this this” against you, even if it’s truth. That’s a Simple Logic. I still wonder why don’t these people (target: TV Channel’s) get this point.
I personally am Angry at a “TV” Channel for a few of their statements aired during elections although am not with nay party and have boycotted Elections all the way.
Stop watching GEO, Stop Watching AAJ, Go For: Express NEWS!
For all the time Pakistan has endured dictatorship it has suffered censorship. Despite the fact that people never different TV channels and did not have the benefit of the Internet, people still managed to get rid of dictators. Censorship never prevented the fall of dictators. The most powerful tool is the word of mouth, rumours. Rumours are a dangerous weapon more powerful than any other. A dictator is very weak when people turn him into a laughing stock. Any person with the slightest self respect would step down. Everyone made fun of General Zia. No one watched the state owned PTV people watched Indian films and English films. So any thinks that by banning a particular TV channel will stop the devastating rumours, they are mistaken. The best thing a government can for its survival to end every kind censorship. When censorship is imposed it means the government has something to hide. When speaking the truth becomes a crime, then lies rule.
