PTA Blocks websites with Salman Taseer’s pictures ‘Harmful for the integrity of the Country’

Its being reported that PTA has recently blocked six specific URL’s in Pakistan deeming them “harmful for the integrity of the country“. These websites are blocked for carrying a certain set of pictures containing Salman Taseer, The Governor of Punjab & his family.  The PTA is said to have complied upon the request from the Inter Ministerial Committee which has prefered to monitor and block anti-Pakistan, blasphemous, and pornographic web sites.

The alleged pictures had started making rounds on the Internet in early November and consequentially did find its way on a few specific websites, we too did share a couple but preferred to ignore the remaining as they were definitely too personal for public consumption.

Though on a personal level we exercised self-restraint in choosing not to publish the private pictures of his daughter, but I am shocked to see the official bureaucracy go begging at his mercy deeming these websites as harming the national integrity of Pakistan, quite definitely a far fetched lame excuse at best. I am sure there could have been other effective legal measures to bring down these pictures, which would then have been a better representative of a democratically elected government but it seems they still choose to rule by the dictatorial stick. All said, I am definitely shocked to see how easily PTA was eager to comply to this lame excuse on the whims of certain individuals and hope that they quickly revert their decision to block these websites

Though I still choose not to share those pictures myself but some common sense needs to be knocked into PTA and our Governor that its nearly impossible to totally block / censor content on the Internet as even now a simple Google search will list a dozen more websites which are also sharing the same images

The following are the six (6) URL’s that are supposed to be blocked from Pakistan

  1. http://www.dictatorshipwatch.com/2008/11/08/governer-punjab-salman-taseer-%E2%80%93%-history.html

too little too late, pictures are all over the internet, there are loads on youtube.

I agree thats this could have been prvented at first place if atheist salman taseer would have taught his family some lessons on how to act especially when father is on key public post and is consider public figure. Since he haven’t, lesson must be learnt now harder way.

I bet majority “upper class” in Pakistan consider it liberal and who consider it against Pakistani and Muslims ethics, no one really cares listening them unfortunately.

I wrote to Tahir Sarwar Mir “a self proclaimed journalist” when I saw his article in a paper defending Taseer’s nudist family by saying that these photos are manipulated and anyone with little know how in computers can easily do that. When I explained him that being in media industry from 10 years I can assure you that those are not manipulated, his reply was “Behave yourself”.

    hello people
What happened to salman Taseer himself ?Once he was a good looking guy like his son too.
Well!nice family having good time.Good luck to them.
People of Pakistan I know what a shockit is to us to accept that yes!people do live upto Western standards and do drink in Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
This is not something new.It is happening before Pkaistan was made. The truth is even during Zia time people were drinking and living high fly life style .
Religion ,modesty, simplicity ,gracefulness, education, arts, crafts, ideas ,culture cannot be forced down through the throats of people like a medicine or hammered like a nail in a head.
There are two sorts of people in Pakistan, one which is extremely moddy scoddy and the second who are followers of tradition culture.
In my conclusion both are muslims, both are Pakistanis and both should be able to accept each other .
Regarding banning the websites is sheer hypocracy.
This is what I hate.Double standards.
This is not acceptable. This is what causes confusion in personality.
Either accept who you are what you believe in and respect that and stand for it or else shut up.

    @Farrah,

interesting to know your two sorts of Pakistanis only,

but the strong majority of Pakistanis have civic sense

and aware of the ravages of alcohol, smoking, drugs,

and vulgar Bollywoodism, I don’t think these social evils

should be forced down the throats of Pakistanis like a

Asad, I live in UK too, binge drinking is just tip of an iceberg, there is a long list of social problems in this country. Antisocial activities, teenage pregnancies, sex attacks, child and female molestation, racism are few to begin with.

This country is going down the drain at speed of light, believe me I even current situation I can walk anywhere in Pakistan without fear, but not in UK, 3 is exact number of my friends who have been beaten half dead because they were Asian in last 2 years by drunk white males. Police here is service rather force. UK is the only country in world where Christians have gay priest, underage girls have kids to claim state benefits, old people thrown to care homes to die, govt. is making sex education compulsory from age of 5 soon, not to teach kids physical sex changes and different stages but how to do safe sex and avoid pregnancies so govt can save money from benefits, majority Britons are heavily in debts, you’ll see these people crying dead over animal problems, but not bothered at all on death of human especially if its not English. Did you see news today? Pope is asking for change in financial system, archbishop of Canterbury is calling overhaul in family system for a while now, because they know western values and system is brink of a disaster not because of external dangers but because of themselves.

Sorry for rant guys, but this is just a glance of so called advance nation, we Pakistanis are way much better and I MEAN IT. But when we’ll start accepting things like Taseer’s family and many more, we’ll be not far from above few problems.

I am not advocating Western life style.Binge drinking or alcohalism for uptill now my lungs would have expired with cerocis.
Bhutto,Mustafa Kher,Tehmina Durrani,Shehbaz Shrief,Imran Khan,Tahira Syed ,Miss Pakistan and many more these are people of Pakistan.
I am not saying what they do is right, what I am saying is we should not live in denial that it is not a part of Pakistan society.
Pakistan TV is full of Makeup and fake woman ,Mera etc etc,
    why?
Our life in reality is different.Pakistan woman and men are different .Why they are not portrayed? We do not live in twenty canal house with Jeeps and servants?
    This causes a friction.
Ask the son and daughter of any politician to come and work with us as a Teacher,as a banker?
Do they need to?Yet we vote for them. They cannot be teachers they cannot be soldiers but they can be leaders. What these corrupt politicians have brought us.
We need to elect decent middle class people.Who know the hardship of sweating in loadshedding and making chappaties in 40 degree temprature for whole house in a small kitchen made of concrete.Or standing in a bus stop.Tragedy is not bombs, tragedy is when it is final exam of a student and there is loadshedding?
Pakistani woman needs glucose drips so much. Thanks to sukanjabeen and Tarbooze we survive?
Why we vote for such people?Who do not represent us ?
The upper class is madar, pider azad and lower class is same so PPP thrives.
Middle class does not like PPP and Fahashi, yet does not stand up in elections either nor votes for moderates????
At least these Westernised people should be shown the reality somewhere and that somewhere is not taking them out of meida eye, that is allow them to who they are.Press should be filled up with their gossip and romances and boyfriends and girlfriends and misery and explotation of ordinary beings.
We have used to live with hypocrasy in the name of Islam.
I might be living in UK but no that day has not dawned yet when Pakistanis would be ready to say ,Yes darling your girl friend ,you can bring her home.Or hi dad!meet my boy friend and let us drink and dance altogether .
But yet Pakistanis are like that ?Muslims are like that.

  12. farrah k raja Avatar

freedom and liberty are huge responsibilities ,one has to make own boundaries and set limits.in case of muslims if they follow Islam is best .It saves ,being a woman,me from exploitaion in the name of free sex and being a single mother or sole reponsibility of bringing up a child.
People in the modern world have access and choice to everything particularly in the presence of internet. We need to educate people ,this education must start when the children are still children.
Yes we could simply turn a blind eye to all this and pretend we are safe or accept that ,no this is reality, what is my child learning and doing ?How I am behaving and what affects it will carry on my child?
    Live with responsibility.
This is vision of Salman Taseer and his family ,well people voted for this SAHAB .People were crazy for Bhutto and people were tired of Islamisation of Zia as well? What do people want?We have to learn to co-exist.
Can we stop people from behaving in a reckless manner.Britain has a problem of obesity.I do not know to be honest where to draw a line in the name of morality? It is such a difficult issue.
I do not see a point of forcing a girl to wear hijab with a line of boyfriends neither I see the point of observing Ramadan and affering Namaz and Hajj when rest of the life or 335 days drinking is fine with men(mostly it is muslim men in Pakistani society and abroad who do consume alcohal). But if people do it,they do it.
the best we can do is to preserve our religion.By not accepting that yes woman without hijab is allowed in Islam.Islam is not so strict or by saying that Spirits business is ok or drinking is not forbidden,to be drunk is.etc,etc.

I can see people have refrained from commenting on this thread.
That is what I do not like.We are afraid to face challenges and our morality.
This divide in Muslim society a difference of English and Urdu Medium ,this gap is widening ?Who is going to bridge it.WHo is going to address it?It is we and mutual consencus of people.
Our sub concious and concious decissions.
who is goingto tell Taseer ,we do not approve of it.Who is going to tell human rights that no my human rights are not voilated because of Islam.

    @farrah

i beg to differ with your concept of accepting each other, the reasons:

pakistan was created in the name of islam not culture or tradition, people do have to live as they want and no one should be allowed to force their believe on to them, however people like STaseer are not ordinary people, they present a Muslim nation and Pakistani culture, and being public servant he must do what ordinary Pakistani wants him to do.

Once in west pornography was considered unethical, now sex is profession, because people start accepting it! then homosexuality was almost considered sin, now it comes under human act and same sex marriage is allowed with pride. Now west hates and are very against child sex, believe you me few generation down the line people will start accepting it as some sort of fun related activity.

If we start accepting what is wrong, that becomes a right.. very recent example is US drone attacks on Pak soil, once we accepted that, now its routine…

Someone has to pay; PTA took a good step!!!!

ZAB publicly claimed in a rally at Lahore, “Yes, I am an alcoholic; atleast I do not drink people’s blood”…and the good crowd cheered.

Governor Salman is not a hypocrite man but a patriotic Pakistani who would say what he wants to say without fear.

The Nawaz Leagues cheap propaganda of publishing his private pictures shows the mentality of paindoos and Islamist in Pakistan.

Point is that there has to be some form of self censorship imposed by blogers themselves or the law must take its course and ban; block and punish those who invade someone’s privacy just because they think the pictures/content will attract more traffic….

  17. barristerakc Avatar
    barristerakc

This is what I had written before,

“I personally think that personal aspects of the life of a politician should indeed be granted the protection of privacy. So in this respect the politician is no different from anyone else. But the peculiar ethical demands of political life mean that this protected area is smaller for politicians and furthermore, not very secure. The privacy of a politician is always liable to be under scrutiny and what is to be regarded as private depends on the politician’s own wishes is not acceptable. It would make politicians judges in their own cases, whereas empirical studies of corruption show that politicians are very poor at drawing an ethically acceptable line between public life and what is properly private. So although the blogers community were justified in posting Governor’s pictures with the drinks but absolutely, broke all forms of decency by producing his family pictures since personal aspects of the life of a politician should indeed be granted the protection of privacy.
Politicians should have their personal lives protected only on the assumption that the way they behave in their lives – the character, principles, attitudes, beliefs and virtues they display are not only quite distinct from but are also greatly superior to their behavior and character in their private lives. While the Blogers fraternity should understand that publication of information or images about someone’s / anyone’s private life without that person’s consent is only acceptable where there’s a “legitimate public interest overriding the right of privacy’. Even politicians is entitled to respect for his or her privacy except where circumstances relating to his private life could affect the performance of his duties or public confidence in him or his position……
Very dispassionately, so where the blogers broke all norms of decency and ethics by putting up picture’s of ST’s family they are somewhat legitimate in posting the pictures with the glasses minus his kids pictures.”

Anyone who considers “Wahadiyat” of Allah (that there’s no God except Allah) and considers (with emphasis on the word, “considers”) Prophet Mohammad (s.a.w) as his last prophet is a “MUSLIM” …..So Ahmedis/Qadyanis are not Muslims but lets not forget there great contributions towards making of Pakistan; unfortunately, we as a state failed to protect them which is unfortunate.

Having said that; I would love Pakistan to have a Hindu President (Rana Bhagwandas type)or a good old Parsee Digra or a minority member as preisdent.

Unfortunately, our bias constitution does not allow that which is “acceptable” since majority (2/3) voted for it.

As for Alcohol; Bootlegging is a booming business in Pakistan and Off-Licenses (Alcohol Shops) are every where to be seen in Karachi (atleast) and served in better restaurants. Heck some of the foreign diplomats are the biggest bootleggers (thanks to the diplomat quota)….

We have Muree Brewery and I think another Brewery which produces finest Scotch and Beers. Infact, I know lot of foreigners who switched from foreign brands to ours.

How many Baloch, Sindhis and Mohajirs one see as Islamist Terrorists? 99% of all sectarian and global terrorists are either Punjabis or Pashtuns. There seems to be a major genetic problem…

Islamists are those who believe that the ideology of Islam is the only criterion of nationhood and full citizenship and rejects concept of “territorial state”; yes, “the same non-state actors who attacked Mumbai”. Al-Queda/Taliban’s are perfect examples who are working for world domination.

Anyhow I do respect Asad Ali, Dr.Jawad and Farah(s) opinions prorably because it’s what the average Joe on the street is thinking – popular sentiments but one should always remember that in real world; popular sentiments are ignored because quite often popular sentiments are nothing but “emotional” and are product of short sightedness. Not to be taken seriously. It reminds me Zahid Hamid sorts –

Fortunately the leaders and people who matters take our point of view or atleast forced by International Pressure to take our views seriously and implement our doctrine.

unfortunately USA of George Bush and Israel is hated and disowned by their own people. It is a shame in the whole world which is full of moderate and beautiful people and dialogue you have chosen the worst words and worst models.
We are all free choice is yours.

statistics proved that MQM has the most terrorists
    elements specialized as
killers, thugs, looter, kidnapers, ransom, load-shedding
target killing, this is all MQM’s leader’s specialities,
MQM’s leaders, first exterminated their own people, then
its own leaders then the Pathans, punjabis and Sindhis.
Its total bullshit what you are saying, as for religious
madness and your falshood, kindly let us know where is
Deoband and Bareli ? But rest assure to eliminate your
sort I am ready to cooperate with all the fanatics.
One day we will, Inshallah, get you all in line.
MQM is aided by Indian RSS, Bhajrang Dal, they receive
instructions from India, and ISI knows that.

I thought in religion, belief and relationship to Allah is private but practice is human and social. My clan of brothers is Universal, tell me the part of world where Muslims were not present have not built the mosques .Even before Nasa went to moon we were there

You were right in all of your comments. People of Pakistan are all dumb nuts.

We are still in the age of "Baad Shaahat". We like to please any one above us to get reward of it. We bend our heads to get reward. We complain about someone to get reward. We elect these politicians to get reward….Even we pray a lot to get a reward from GOD.

If this culture (of elite class) is not bad, why are we adopting it? If bollywood programs are shamefull, why we love them?

I think there is a difference between being a Muslim and being called a Muslim. You may be right that we are all Muslims and Pakistanis but not practically.

Muhammad (PBUH) said: Qayamah will not happen untill people in my Ummah will do a sex on street before everyone eyes and no body will care, and a man who will tell the couple that you should have done it in private, would be ranked as Abu Bakar of that time. (sorry don’t know the exact wordings)

Barrister is just a begening (see how proud and open he’s for his drinking!! which clearly haram in Islam)

    If he’s muslim btw.
