Recently we (The Critic Blog Team) conducted a survey to prove or disprove a hypothesis that “There is a difference of opinion among the masses about the top 5 problems, i.e. every other person focus on different agendas thus there is no channelized effort toward any single issue”.
After receiving replies we complied the data (shown below), which depicts that every person had a different opinion about the problems, there is some agreement on the issues but the ranking given to that issue differed greatly, some agree on macro level, but disagree on details. The data made us think that we are in fact a gigantic crowd living at the same geographical location called Pakistan, we are not connected by any means.
From this analysis we would like to build another hypothesis that as a whole, our disintegrated minds and souls are infact our biggest weakness / problem … we just can’t unite, simply because, in religious terms, our qibla is unique to others … we prioritize as per our own ideals, needs and wants and analyze the world in the same context … In other words for each individual the problem are those elements of society which stand against his own needs or ideals, thus his conclusions stands contrast of others accordingly…
Would you agree?

I didn't. thats the result of the survey … your comments are needed on the hypothesis I raised "that as a whole, our disintegrated minds and souls are infact our biggest weakness / problem … we just can’t unite, simply because, in religious terms, our qibla is unique to others … we prioritize as per our own ideals, needs and wants and analyze the world in the same context … In other words for each individual the problem are those elements of society which stand against his own needs or ideals, thus his conclusions stands contrast of others accordingly…"

Dear Reflection,
What Jamat-e-Islami was doing when the member of their own alliance MMA visited USA???
MMA LEADERS VISITED USA WHEN JAMAT-E-ISLAMI WAS IN MMA!

"Attitude"? "Prioritisation"?
What a half-assed and utterly pointless survey. It's results will obviously not be useful (as is displayed by the numbers) because those who conducted it don't know the ABCs of surveying.
And it's funny that the survey didn't have "terrorism" as an option.
Either way; I do appreciate the fact that someone tried to conduct such a survey. But this needs to be done all over again; and this time, please consult someone who has studied statistics at least at the BSc level.
Thanks Danial for the comments, I would agree that we are not experts … furthermore the list only includes top 15 issues, there are many more but not significantly mentioned …. further it was an open ended, i didn't gave respondents a list, they just mentioned their top of mind issues.
However, If you can help design a better one, then you are more then welcome …
By the way would you agree with the hypothesis at the end?
OJ
Absolutely… crowd of 170 million donkeys.
Hi Omar,
First, let me repeat my appreciation of the effort; my criticism was harsh, but I genuinely meant well.
I agree that there is no unity on many critical issues; but this disconnect can be mapped through such surveys quite easily.
As far as designing is concerned, I would suggest drawing down the number of options available. For example, can't "political instability", "leadership" and "feudalism" be put forward as one option? The more straight forward and crisp a survey is, the better and more reliable the results. Obviously, respondents can be prodded later for micro-trends, but if the idea is to figure out Pakistanis' lack of unity on key issues, then the survey has to be concise and crisp.
Going back to mapping this disconnect; I am sure some interesting trends would emerge if we tally responses to the survey with the location; socio-economic class; political affiliation; religio-ethnic background; education; etc.
Once again, great effort.
Thanks, i am learning . . . . I would classify this survey to be some where in between qualitative and quantitative. Initially i intended to get candid responses, on top 5 problems faced by people of pakistan, like in any marketing research, a qualitative interview is done to get a general opinion, latter a questionnaire is used to get exact numbers against those opinions to quantify the results, i think thats probably ur suggestion. Thanks, OJ
Despite the weaknesses of this survey that have been pointed out above by Danial, I found it to be quite a fascinating read, simply because it is a very clear snapshot of the thinking of Pakistanis at current times. Just for that, it is an interesting, if not methodologically sound, survey.
As the #1 issue, corruption was quite low ranked (less than 1%) but overall as a top 5 issue, it was by far the highest. Corruption, however, is often a symptom of a problem, not a cause of the problem.
taliban can make us the part of the ummah
Haha! Easy now, Dr Jawwad
there wont be an ummah if they continue to kill for fun like they are doing now…
oh and btw; the ummah cannot be united; even if by some sort of miracle you gather everyone under one roof in pakistan; would the arabs see you as equal partners in faith? i dont think so…
would the arabs see you as equal partners in faith? i dont think so…
agreed……arrogance, superiority complex, wealth and posh life style, made them believe that they are superior to every one except the americans.
Good Effort, OJ.
However, me think time is not good to highlight the dividing issues, instead we should gather up common and unity based themes in media. We are a crowd but more than 90% are in same boat in spite of criticism. All of us are:
– Pakistani by birth/nationality so lineage
– Mostly believe in Allah, Prophet & Religion
(Difference is of propagated opinions or practice)
– All of us eat and live at its soil, how much we detest
(still part of the problem)
– Ripped of of our basic human rights even when no Taliban and US war on terror existed (48,49,56,60's, 70's …)
We are all sick of politics but still we bring people in/ do not oppose who plunder again and rob us ( PP-X/MQM/ML-X ).
We are known to the blunders of deeni ulema and still follow our sect/fiqah and no one denounces/retalliate
We are manipulated by generals and their goons still we show of glamorous liaison with big wigs in brass and take advantage whenever we can. Is pak army is from Mars? Many of us like our residences in cantonments and defences along with our children compete for enlisting in brass/related institutions.
How many of us are willing to come forward and openly disregard these elements and breaking our safety shell. Till then we need to pray for miracle and pay the price. Doing survey in rural areas (80+%) in Pakistan will surely bring only two problems without confusion to the authors:
1) Hunger
2) Freedom/Security
Soon to become for urban middle-class the same fashion. Media, blog writers and educated class needs to do real things for unity of pakistanis instead of fancy words, scientific reasoning and grammatical glitz.
I beg a pardon to be long.
good luck
@ziawan!
very impressive…
thanks ziawan, I cannot disagree …

You don't act as the ambassadors of Araba, you rafizee A$$.
The ummah (Sunnis) didn't end when your Khumeni, safwid finished them in Iran.
The survey is about Ummah, it doesn't include you and other Rafizis
