Sick of Musharraf lovers – a factual rant

I’m very disturbed, disappointed and sick to death to see the amount of facebook’ers on my list who think Musharraf’s leaving has been a catastrophe for Pakistan. Just because a new evil, a.k.a Zardari, is in the house does not mean that the previous evil is now a good man. A “leader” as some say. That’s our problem – as an entire nation. We forget and we repeat our mistakes over and over again.

People left right and centre have been levelling accusations at me, and countless others like myself, that we support Zardari. Unfortunately no one takes out 5 minutes to ask if that is so. Let me save you the time…we don’t. And no, he is NOT democratically elected. Hierarchic / Monarchic rule within the party does not ensure a democratic candidate, so stop ranting that its democracy that’s bad. We, the people, have been cheated again. The actual institution has been wronged.

I will get hate messages and mail after this because I get them often for my stance. Those who know me well know my passion for this country and its welfare so at least I can’t be labelled for propaganda as my other friends and colleagues are. But I must have my say – whether or not you bother to read the entire note.


It might seem like an attack on all you who support Musharraf, but unfortunately he was a friend of the wealthy and his circles included the elite and the ruling elite (I use the terms separately so that the few elite members in my list are spared the mercy of being called PML-Q-ians).

His ruling party looted and spent generously. The corruption meter Musharraf used himself to oust Nawaz Sharif has rated the corruption during his past 8 years government rule at least 20-40% more corrupt than that of Benazir or Nawaz Sharif…. and that is quite a task to achieve! Don’t believe me – do some research.

Of course all of you will lament his going. You thought he was fighting for the country, and the economy was oh-so-booming and justice was being handed out to all and sundry.

If you think this way then:

  1. None of you had your father/brother/son/husband picked up by intelligence forces, sold to America and other countries for bounty money, threatened torture and death to you and your extended family for searching for your family member.
    • The worst insult – Musharraf announcing that all the missing persons had actually just run away from their homes and/or were jihadi terrorists. Yes Mr. Musharraf that’s a very smart thing to say – since it really worked for you to pull out a name from your list every time a suicide bombing happened. 
      • I have met the families of the missing persons in a very high level semi-secretive meeting arranged by HRCP and Amnesty, a couple of years back, and I met normal people with normal lives – just like yours and mine, but maybe a bit more harsher – suddenly flung into chaos. 
      • I met a 10 year old boy who was picked up alongside his father and uncle and saw his father being tortured. His father still isn’t back.
      • I met the murdered journalist Hayat-ullah’s brother who had gone missing with his brother but had been released while his brother killed. The brother too was killed months after I met him.

    • How is this the war on terror? It’s more like the war of terror. Why are we being auctioned to satiate an ever-hungry monster’s desire to colonize the world? (USA for those who didn’t get that)
  2. None of you care to find out what happened on May 12, 2007, when Karachi went under siege and people on all sides were senselessly killed, roads blocked, Edhi ambulances attacked and drivers killed – and NO action was taken. But dancing and celebrating the Punjab qabza group government continued in Islamabad.
    • The Karachi bridge collapsing after that seemed trivial and really required no justice. Because a few poor people died and Pakistan can do without some more mouths to feed.
  3. All of you and your mothers/sisters/daughters/friends/wives have not been raped, or better yet gang-raped. Then you probably believe that rape is supposed to be silenced and that Mukhataran Mai case was “so over-done”. Musharraf was right when he had Mukhataran Mai put on the ECL (Exit Control List) so that the image of Pakistan would not be destroyed.
    • And all of you at some time have visited countries abroad, or if you’re lucky like me, were probably born abroad so you don’t have to get raped to get an American visa. Musharraf seemed to think that’s why us ladies in Pakistan liked to get raped. Again you doubt me, check online for direct quotes.
  4. You are also one of those people who’s countless acres of land were not snatched in Balochistan and Sindh and handed for a pittance to army officers who then minted a fortune in selling them later. That’s because you don’t live in Balochistan or NWFP and have your own little place in a Pakistani-suburbia.
  5. You probably also think that Balochis are terrorists and should be tackled with the way they are for wanting to break Pakistan.
    • In the past 8 years or so media coverage of Balochistan was banned. No one knew what was happening there because the General didn’t see it fit for you to know. 
    • So while they were being killed they had other trivial things to worry about too:
      • No gas – because they provide all to you me and the rest of Pakistan
      • No electricity – because why would tribals need it
      • No CNG – because…they have cars?
      • No roads – no CNG, no cars, why need roads?
      • All the minerals, discovered and potential sites, being sold to the yens and the dollars and the pounds while they get nothing
      • And the budget allocation – my God it has been an insult each time their share has been announced.
    • But you say that it serves the tribal Sardars right. Because there are NO other regular people, middle class, students, poor, old, unwell people in Balochistan – only Sardars. 
    • Tell me – why was Pakistan made? Were we not all being denied our basic rights back then? The breaking up of a country to form our country is celebrated – yet when a province, hounded and ignored since Pakistan’s inception now demands their rights or separation you call them villains and terrorists. Damn hypocrisy I say. 
  6. You agree the media has lost control and attacked Musharraf when it was he who “allowed” them to come.
    • Again, my lovelies, the free media revolution had started in 1989 and most of these new channels came when the new satellite technology came. Not because they were always barred and Musharraf had an epiphany to allow them. 
    • It’s shameful how Daily Times Najam Sethi has sold his soul to the pimped out Governor Salman Taseer to keep his position. Why don’t you question his stand?
    • And it’s time anyway to wake up and see what’s happening in ever corner of your country. This again does not mean I support substandard and/or yellow journalism
    • And if you still think, like Musharraf did, that all the channels sucked and reported wrong information and deserved to be banned in November 2007, then can you please explain why BBC, CNN, Al-Jazeera and all other international news channels were also banned? 
    • MEDIA MUST BE FREE. Those who are not interested in changing the status quo of this country please change the damn channel to a cheap Indian soap opera which everyone seems to enjoy.
  7. You think that suspending the constitution was fine and it solved issues. I talk about a constitution, which is not just formed on a whim. It is a legislation almost sacred to a country. It is based on the universal declaration of human rights that are meant to apply to all and sundry; that ensures basic rights to speech, to thought, to movement, to association, to expression, to religion, to vote, to protest, to demand, to information. If the law guarantees you this security NO one should be allowed to manipulate it to say otherwise. No situation allows for the government to tell me to shut up and sit at home and not participate in democratic (or non-democratic as it might be) change. The government is my servant. It exists to take care of me and look after my country. I pay it to do so and it enjoys a very large amount of luxuries on this behalf alone.
  8. You probably also felt that the activists, journalists, lawyers and students deserved to be beaten up, tortured and arrested. 
    • Then Pakistan’s constitution should be “cleaned up” and our rights to protest, freedom of assembly, freedom of association, legal rights before detention and arrest should all be scrapped, because the General didn’t find them fit to implement.
    • The emergency was declared to minimize violence, quote unquote. Read Washington post’s article, written by Musharraf himself. The comments on the article are deeply revealing. The suicide attacks still happened. During the emergency the violence against citizens was abominable. More than 5000 people jailed. I myself made a list of 1000 arrests for my work. People, civilians, activists, lawyers, students, little children beaten up like dogs. Is that security? Is that how you “control society”? By breaking their bones, ripping off their clothes and kicking them in the gut. I have names and pictures, arrested and manhandled. Honestly speaking the army, our protector ended up doing more damage to us than anyone else. The police had as usual jumped in to join the party. The fight for judiciary might have the face of Chaudry Iftikhar and you might not like him but the truth is that judiciary must be free and impartial. Arresting lawyers because “they could incite trouble” is about the biggest hogwash there is.
  9. You agree with military rule for the benefit of the nation. The army unrightfully so taxes us to our bones for “security reasons”, even gobbling up the share for education and development, yet Lal masjid brewed a few kilometres from the presidents’ house with mass ammunitions, ak 47s machine guns, grenades, gas masks…that too in the most heavily policed city in the country. Is that how the army protects us and itself
    • Sadly, because of Musharraf the armed forces really have suffered. And thousands of men, Jawans not Generals, who come from all corners of the country and bear freezing cold and scorching heat to sacrifice their lives for the love of their country, bear the brunt of their military leaders’ bad choices. The army’s job is to protect our borders and that’s what it should do. We received billions of dollars in aid to tackle terrorism. Not only did terrorism increase, but also there have been solid links of financial and logistical support found between the ISI and the terrorists. Who sold us to the Americans and allowed Boucher and Condoleeza to dictate terms? Where does the army get its funding/training/weapons/luxuries from? I’m sure you’ll like reading Dr. Ayesha Siddiqua’s book Military Inc. I enjoyed it and I haven’t found any quotes from the army denying it. Except for maybe banning the book because reading is so bad for Pakistanis. They’ll start to think.
  10. You say Shut up Saira – do you know what he did for our economy? Yes what did he do? Watching a show on TV last year about Pakistan’s “booming economy” I was surprised to hear a very Mary Antoinette-ish remark made by one of the young pro-government economists “so what if Punjab has a wheat crisis. They’ll get something else to eat”. 
    • The reason Pakistan’s GDP went up was because of two reasons – the banking sector and the telecommunication sector. The Pakistan banking sector has one of the worst interest rates in the world – how sweet is that since you and your daddies don’t really need to take out any loans – but many other’s do and the banking sector feeds of their carcasses. Nowhere else in the world would Citibank have been allowed to hound a person (and thousand others like him) till he committed suicide.
  11. Coming to Citibank – don’t even bring me to Shaukat (Shortcut) Aziz. The man is undoubtedly smart and he could have done wonders for us – yet he too looted us and helped the ruling class mint some more. mint mint mint.
    • The Punjabi ruling class however was not content and sold and/or hoarded our flour and sugar, so that the hungry stomachs would dish out more when food was scarce. 
    • Don’t get me started on the chief justice case. You don’t like him because you think the lawyers brought anarchy to the streets. Well the Chief Justice really should have been kicked in the boot. After all he stopped Shaukat Aziz, Musharraf and all their cronies from extreme profiteering in the Steel mill case, and he asked about the missing persons – the damn missing persons. Oh and Suo Motu…he played with that little Latin term that the government came to associate as a swear word.

And FINALLY, all you people lamenting his exit and the arrival of the new vulturesit was Musharraf’s gift to us, the NRO, which legalised their return and it was Musharraf who pardoned all of Benazir’s, Zardari’s and the Sharif brothers’ cases so that he could get a safe exit in return– one tyrant to another. Mushie knows best.

I don’t even know where to stop. I talk from facts. Hundreds and thousands of files, numbers, cases, stats and complaints lying on my desk and those of my colleagues. Colleagues who got arrested for assembling at the office when the emergency was declared. Colleagues who passionately fight for people’s rights – the same rights that allow you and me the simple liberties we take for granted. We meet people who were abused by Musharraf, those who were abused before him and no doubt those who will be abused by the new monster that has narcissistically named itself the people’s government.

For god sakes wake up you slumbering fools. Musharraf’s exit does not have to mean the return of another evil period for us. Why cant we make it mean something more and bring in more educated people into the services and politics. Talk, speak out, and demand action and accountability so that these goons don’t get to loot us again. Lets not be quiet and say lawyers are liars and politicians are pansies. Maybe if we just worked just as hard as making things work as we do in criticising, things could get better. Start by doing your bit – bit by bit – and wait for the change to happen. Don’t sit and complain in your comfortable houses and cars. Don’t do that because it doesn’t help anyone.

Or just don’t damn well fornicate to produce a generation that will suffer at your expense.

    what i know is that in Musharraf era, no one was worried for his job security, there was no brain drain, exchange rate was maintained, we had good relationship with China (had we bowed our head to US, we would not have built gawader port against US wishes). We agree there were some mistakes. And Saira, you fogot to mention Lal masjid (dont know intentionally or unintentionally)
    You are talking about missing people, US has now entered in our territory and killed innocent children now. we are now going to sell our qadirpur gas field.
    I must say, Mushi was the best of worst lot.

    I applaud the direct attack…helps in discussion. Now riddle me´this? You say mush was the most evil regime where 100s got kidnapped and were sold? They were not sold our country agreed on an extradition treaty with the us for terrorists. Agreed ppl were abused and that was wrong but in a war this is what happens saira…u talk of 600 ppl? A 100 die per day in fata alone not that thats any better but do u not understand we have to fight these militants they have destroyed our way of life they are responsible for the pakistan of today. You say lal masjid was a tragedy? I say it was a neccasity the govt waited for days but the militants would not come out. We cannot allow ppl to challenge the writ of the government.

    You say those who love musharraf are all elitists who have cosy lives? Ask a common man on the street and he will tell u he does not give a damn since in mushes govt prices were down morale was up and ppl were happy.

    you speak of banks fleecing consumers? And of ppl whos daddies dont need a loan well saira sometimes taking a loan out is not always a good option. If u cannot afford something save…instant gratification always has evils associated with it.

    To top it all off u speak of the CJ i agree with the movement nothing wrong with it. Howver since u are screaming wake up perhaps u should drink some coffee yself and see that the man u claim to be the savior is the one who RATIFIED MUSHES COUP. So hows that for just grapes sister?

    The funniest part is ppl comparing mush to zardari a guy who took from pak and made palaces outside while mush gave to pakistan and sits here in pakistan even after his resignation. He made mistakes yes definately…but like i said we all have a lot of scathing questions. I hope to find someone who has any solution….any at all.

    US was attacking our territory even during the Musharraf era, does anyone recalls the attack on a Madressah in Bajour Agency where 80 innocent people were killed and copied of Quran destroyed? How can anyone justify that? Its a pity that people fail to see just how much Musharraf has destroyed our country (not implying that Zardari is any better).

    For Faisal and nomi – you probably did not get what I have been trying to explain and no I do not believe that Musharraf was the best of the worse…because i did not see the stable economy or job security or happiness you talk about. We at HRCP have logged in a record ammount of suicides due to unemployment in the last 4 years alone. You’re welcome to access the stats whenever you please.

    Also I did not forget Lal Masjid and maybe you could read the article to find out where it is mentioned. I do NOT support the terrorists inside but surely you must have read some combat strategies to know how such interventions and operations are meant to be dealt with. no idea. I suggest you research the very similar siege of the Wazir Khan mosque a couple of decades back. Ingenious methods of cutting off water supply and food rations and electricity, the government managed to end the siege within a few days without any violence. Oh and the head mullah escaped in a food ki dechki, just like the burqa-escape of lal masjid.

    FATA, Waziristan, Balochistan,NA – all are tragedies. and ones that have been boiling for along long time. The American attacks have come to your notice just now because they have been allowed to feature in your news so yes you wake up. not me. If you manage to read the news or listen to it at least you’ll realize how this has been happening under cover for 4 years through the CIA. Read new york times if you don’t believe me.

    to Faisal can you forward me one document of the extradition treaty and what international covenants it applies to. and what standards were followed during these reported extraditions…The Geneva accord, the UDHR etc etc.. anything. No. Nada. Nil. There never was one and there never will be one so please don’t fool yourself over that one. The simple basic rule of information was denied to the one being picked up and his family of the reason of the arrest (if you may call the abductions that).

    And Brother Faisal, I have not ONCE claimed that Chaudry Iftikhar is the saviour so better mince words for someone else’ mouth – I prefer to speak for myself.

    Wow! “My lovelies” (your quote) – you certainly have your ways with words! Nevertheless, for the most parts we are on the same page – particularly with regards to the change of status quo – and that includes a complete overhaul of our legal system. Our legal system also stinks to the high heavens!

    Undoubtedly, the independence of the judiciary is of paramount importance in ensuring the separation of powers, which is a cardinal principle of any civilized democracy. Alas, instead of acting as a fortress against gross abuse of power by the executive and the powerful, the judiciary for the most parts, has displayed a record of collusion, bringing our legal system of justice in such disrepute.

    CJP-Iftikhar has also played both sides of the fence – but nevertheless, because he has become a catalyst for change, many of us are supportive of the reforms he and his colleges are talking about. Surely, none of us wish to see the continuation of the ranting and raving of an unjust and corrupt system. At the same time, many of us would NOT want to see a Western-wannabes version of secular-fundamentalist or Ibsen’s “Doll House” republic either!

    I agree with you 100% that Pakistan will NOT move forward and see any change that matters – until and unless, the SYSTEM is completely overhauled – with a newer breed of educated leaders and politicians and an ALTERNATIVE set-ups from the “old-boys-networks” a.k.a. The Establishment. Let us all start to do our bit towards that end.

    Excuse my ignorance for I do not know who you are and what you do.I have never read your blog before,but I sure am glad to come across your writing now.I agree with you about every point except one -and Iwount discuss that here.I agree with you that Mush was the worst ‘Mir Jafer’ cum’Hitler’ cum ‘Gobbel’ we ever had -and I know Zardari will probably be even worse.I feel in my heart,if this turns out to be true -he will survive for a very short time.

    The Mush lovers are the ones who cry over the good old days when there was no wheat shortage,and less electric shortage -thinking he was responsible for that- and don’t relate to the real reasons;plus forget the far greater evils he bestowed on us .They even forget that PML-Q in fact initially claimed they lost the elections because of the rising prices and electric shortage!!!

    As for his living here,what other option does he have.Saudi,Dubai etc do not suit his’examplary’ life style.America is known to be hard on it’s disposed friends -just look at what happened to The Shah of Iran and President Marcos.Any where else the Taliban and Al-Qaeda will get him;it is only here that he can get full security from Pakistan Army and ISI.

    But I predict soon he will be given handouts by his past masters,like getting hundreds of dollars to lecture in their institutions – or writing another book- to justify his and the American agenda.We can expect to see him frequently out on his pleasure and dollar collecting trips as soon as his house is ready.

    why should not i support musharraf he gave things like national intership programme , a budget of hec never seen before destroyed a mosque that was giving a bad name to islam.

    Its much more easier to highlight the short comings than to appreciate what one has …its human nature…man is never happy with what he has.

    Having said that and after reading the facts stated above I still dont see when in the last 60+ years of our country’s existense did we see economic growth? or foreign investments? or jobs? or building of infrastructure? He had to make tough decisions and he did to ensure that people like you and I do not meet the same fate as what our neighbours did.

    I would greatly appreciate Saira if you could write a blog (unbiased of course) showing statistics on Pakistan’s economic standing (global and local) using the stats HRCP keeps (just facts). Also it will be interesting to see if your organization was tracking how many women were raped, men killed or disappeared or kidnapped or tortured, land looted, justices removed, children molested, business looted etc. (including all that has mentioned above) prior to Musharraf.

    I agree that there have been terrible mistakes by him (and his government) and all that you state is all true – yet I strongly believe that we were better off than where we stand now or where we stood 9 years ago.

    There is a famous saying ….There is no such thing as a perfect leader either in the past or present. If there is one, he is only pretending, like a pig inserting scallions into its nose in an effort to look like an elephant.

    what the hell Musharraf did i ask to you Musharraf Zindabad kay pujari,Internship Programe, in the last year of his government so that he can win some votes for Q league from youngsters and you talk of HEC ,what the HEC can do where there is no progress in Primary and secondary education and declining standards of Government school education.
    Well Saira,we have the psyche of remembering our past too much no matter good or bad ,its not unusual.people who have no belief in future will praise past because they cant do anything else.ITS good work from you ,i appreciate your effort.

    institutions in all categories, including 164,579
    (i.e. 67 percent) in the Public sector and 81,103

    National Education Census (NEC-2005). The census –
    jointly conducted by the Ministry of Education, the
    Academy of Educational Planning and Management (AEPAM)
    and the Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) — reveals
    that the number of private-sector institutions has
    increased from 36,096 in 1999-2000 to 81,103 in 2005,
    i.e. by 100 per cent.

    ISLAMABAD: A leading international public relations firm says that former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf can expect US dollar 200,000 per lecture.

    If former President, whose political career has virtually been written-off, takes a cue from previous White House occupant Bill Clinton, he could earn mega moolah.

    The beleaguered leader is on the threshold of making big bucks through his oratory skills with an international public relations firm saying that he could get between USD 150,000 and USD 200,000 a day for his speeches and lectures.

    That would put him in the category of former US President Bill Clinton who attracts top fee for speaking engagements.

    In a report in its upcoming issue, the Newsweek says that when the 65-year old former Pakistani army chief goes on an expected pilgrimage to Mecca in the next few days, he may continue travelling on a lucrative speaking tour across the Middle East, Europe and the United States.

    Chicago-based Embark LLC, the report says, is just one of the international public relations firms trying to enroll Musharraf as a highly paid keynote speaker.

    It quoted public relations executives as saying the articulate and brash 44-year army veteran’s earnings could approach that of Clinton, who famously snubbed him during a lightning visit to Islamabad eight years ago.

    “The [speaking] fee for Musharraf would be in the range of USD 150,000-200,000 a day plus jet and other VIP arrangements on the ground,” Embark President David B Wheeler said.

    Wheeler was quoted as saying Clinton, for whom Embark has arranged speaking engagements in the Middle East, commands up to USD 250,000 per appearance.

    “If we did multiple events in multiple cities, Musharraf could get closer to the USD 500,000 to USD 1,000,000 range [for a series of talks],” Wheeler told the Newsweek.

    Embark, which promises “unique experiences that educate, entertain and enlighten,” has also booked speeches for former US President George H W Bush and former American Secretary of State Colin Powell, the Newsweek said.

    Pakistanis were quoted as saying that this is good news for the former President, who is not believed to have salted away a fortune as some of his predecessors have done.

    Musharraf will only receive a modest army retirement pension, the report said but added that he is a long way from the poor house. His USD 2 million mansion on five acres of prime land just outside Islamabad is getting the finishing touch, the magazine reported.

    Since his resignation he has been playing golf and tennis with friends, and is also planning to write a sequel to his successful 2006 autobiography, “In the Line of Fire,” which could easily net him another seven-figure windfall, it added.

    This was a man who had faced bullets for his country but has been humiliated more than the servants in our kitchens. Simply because he chose to perpetuate his rule when he should have cleaned up the entire political system and groomed to a new breed of civilian leadership to replace the old corrupt politicians, just like the Bengalis and Thais have done recently. Musharraf was the best of the worst lot, the developmental projects and the successes that he outlined at his last address outshine any of the ‘good things’ our incumbent leaders have ever done.

    With Musharraf gone, the whole responsibility comes to the shoulder of a deep but a silent looking Chief Of Army Staff. I personally believe that the present COAS is a blessed one in the regard that he is the only COAS in the history of Pakistan who had been the head of Pakistan’s premier intelligence agency, ISI, before wearing the crown of COAS. In this way he knows a lot even before becoming the COAS, which a normal routine COAS might not have. Every sane mind could see that what was happening in the country, but ahhhhh, the impulsive nation we are, always restless and eager to see a change. Even if it is for the worse. We have been seeing Mr. Musharraf for last nine years and were in no longer mood to see him there anymore, so we joined every dirty hand to pull him down for our personal satisfaction, no matter even if the price was in the shape of a national security risk to this country. The table of our national security was just hinging on three pedestals, the President, the COAS and the ISI. With the former gone it looks that the odds against the remaining two are quite high. This may not happen soon, but after ISI, the next target of the government at some point in time will be the COAS, who at the moment seems isolated with his one flank quite exposed. Why Mr. Zardari would like to get rid of him is because if he stays in the country, he will one day be an icon of critic for the coming governments, who are all likely to tumble in one way or the other. And for Mr. Nawaz, no logic seems to be working, he just wants Musharraf down and humiliated. Thanks to this political drama, Musharraf has been able to attract back few of his sympathizers. And with the behavior of the politicians, the day is not far when we will see Musharraf’s portrait behind a truck next to this line: “Teray janay kay baad teri yaad ayee”.

    I don’t really care about either Musharraf or Zardari. If forced, I’d probably say Musharraf is the better man, but I don’t really know.

    The important thing isn’t what Musharraf did. That is the past, we can feel sorry and complain, but it isn’t something we can change. The important thing is what would happen in the future for Pakistan. Will Zardari be better or worse?

    Time has come Musharraf has to form a Political Party of educated middle class professionals. I can assure that he will be welcomed in the USA, EU, China, and everywhere. We as “intellectuals, educators (I am Business Prof & Chairman of Deptt), professionals, lawyers, and entrepreneurs” have to take charge. These looters and their families only survived in politics because we never took part or we always accepted # 3 to #10 position. Position # 1 & 2 stayed in the family.     but you need to understand the pro-Mushie reality in a different way, because it often has little to do with opposition to the facts you mentioned

    the first reason is that pakistanis are genuinely unaware of their rights and responsibilities. that is why they are not particularly concerned about either. judicial independence, free speech etc are just fancy terms we have little comprehension of. so when they are taken away the true impact of their loss is rarely felt

    secondly, this country is aching for heroes. that’s why the CJ despite being a relative unknown became such a mass figure, and that too without any media appearances or interviews. similiarly, mushie fans like the idea of the man, and since were not directly affected by the abductions, rapes or dismissals of his era, can genuinely look up to him in love. again, since they have never genuinely felt what freedom of speech was, its loss has not stung them, as they see Nov 3 for example through the prism of realpolitik, whereby it was a necessary action taken for a temporary time and as such excusable.

    and finally, there are some mushie supporters because under him life was a lot more fun. more concerts, more chicks on tv, more adventurous dress sense amongst men and women, less of the moral brigade running our lives. now for all the self-righteous lefties/mullahs/extremists these reasons are reprehensible and we are better off without them, but hey, come on, mushie brought us FTV!!

    Musharraf would be missed by many of us for his integrity, honesty and unquestionable love for Pakistan (for the sake of which he resigned giving the sniveling rats hiding behind the garb of democracy a victory). However the fact remains that Pakistan has to move on. Its actually good that he resigned and can go on to live his life hopefully in safety. As much as I would love to go the way of anti-Musharraf crowd by condemning all that the new government does even if its good, as a Pakistani patriot I do not think I could live with myself for doing so. I support Pakistan and the Pakistan that I believe Musharraf and many like him want. He was thrust into situation which was not of his making. He tried, failed at many things, succeeded at quite a few, but gave his honest best. He made mistakes and backtracked or accepted them as mistakes (which is something that nobody, not even these two rats NS and Zardari are capable of). When he made calls that were difficult, people came down hard on him, however I have always thought that he did so with Pakistan's best interests at heart. Contrary to what the mullah crowd and his detractors have to say, he did what most others did not have the guts to do, which was to balance out Pakistan's interests with those of the other powers (in no way an easy task). His job was an unenviable one, but he did it to the best of his abilities given the circumstances. I do not think that Pakistan has ever been in as difficult a situation as she was in when Musharraf took over. There are very many things that we wanted on which he could not deliver and we were always hoping for more, for even better, but to expect all that from one man, and that too right after the singularly devastating decades of the 90s is too much to ask. His legacy is intact with those who know what the circumstances were when he made his calls. In the end, I am left thinking about Musharraf's legacy in the words of Teddy Roosevelt who wrote: "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat." As Musharraf moves on, we have to be evermore watchful of the existing leadership and in case it fails to deliver then we as the Pakistani patriots have to ensure that we expose their failures to the nation. Last 9 years of growth cannot be stunted on account of the whims of a two bit feudal thug and a two-time failure of a Prime Minister. In conclusion, good luck Gen Musharraf! (I call him out as a Gen because this is what he really was and will remain so…the Presidency was thrust upon him and he did his best with it). I look forward to a strong, stable, viable Pakistan the foundation of which have been laid by Musharraf. May Allah SWT grant our democratic leaders the fortitude to fix what Musharraf intended to fix and realize the Pakistan of Quad-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah Inshallah!

    What.. you said without any media appearances!! 🙂 have you forgot 40 hrs, 30hrs long media transmissions on Black coat rallies led by Mr. CJ? Do you know that GEO claims 100K PKR per minute air time!!! so do you really think that the key media showed all those entertaining rallies and long marches without any monetary benefits? Where is Mr. CJ now.. has he got reinstated? it is very much clear now that he wont be reinstated!!!.. so where are those media, civil society, ex services men now?? why no one is protesting? not even bloggers ;)..

    An amount of Rs 30.5 billion has till now been invested on this movement. A question remained unanswered is “how can a movement involving huge expenditure can be sustained by daily wager lawyers”? It leaves no doubt that regularly it is being funded by secret hands leaving no proof to get exposed. Another most important lead of foreign hand is evident from the fact that the lawyer agitations were the ideal target for bomb blast and suicide bombers but it surprises all to note that these movements have guaranteed immunity from the terrorist.

    Alas.. everyone of us was misused and we still not able to see the real game!but InshaAllah.. very soon.. we will all see and will understand.. Always, Pakistan First!

    Rise of Talibaan didnot happen in Musharaff Era.
    Musharaff did not ask people to go and blow up twin towers or july 7 bombing in London.
    He didnot send invitation to US. to coem and attack Afghanistan?
    He has not asked people to do Karo Kari?
    The history of torture,abuse and woman subjugation is far rooted and difficult.
    It will be extremely unwise to think anyone can change the mentality of the people and the culture.
    We have to see rationally ,even IMF and world bank cannot do miracles in eradicating poverty from Pakistan.
    Woman cannot get rights speaking from their luxurious drawing rooms.
    When we want to asses we have to assess on some parameters.
    Those parameters are Human Rights,Stock Market,Jobs,Security and so on.

    We have to go for a change. In today’s world “Politics & Economics” are interlinked. British democratic system has not given anything to the common man, neither any form of dictatorship. Same feudals have moved in both systems. The new Chinese Model starts from 1984 where China developed everything related to the economy of the country. There has been a strong partnership between Defense Forces, who built infrastructure and civil society who has built economy while the other functions run smoothly because of stable government in the center. There is decentralization in governance at small town level. We can reform current system of Nazims. But we need to follow the model which; in recent history of 23 years has made China a great Economic Powerhouse; not only domestically but worldwide. If we as a nation do not take concrete steps we will never succeed:

    To curb feudalism, we have to do land reforms and make more provinces like Nehru did in India. Unless we have lands reformed, the middle and lower class ( the real people) will not arise and we will remain like this from generations to generations!

    Looks like you have done a big research on how to criticize Musharraf on all grounds, and I must say that whatever you have written there is “ALMOST” correct and its true that all happened during his regime but ever pondered on a vital fact that a person who have lived his life in army, has made several efforts and sacrifices to get on the throne, and has built up a good reputation on International level (I hope you don’t disagree with the repu thing) would do anything, like any of the stuff you mentioned above to bring down his own fame and popularity? Wouldn’t a self-centered and corrupted person like himself would try to retain the throne in the future by trying to raise his popularity graph?

    Could you possibly think of any advantages, any PERSONAL GAINS he would have possibly got by doing all this? Start from the top to the bottom, especially the era after 9/11 when he was without any doubt ruling Pak. If you ponder through every point you have made in your post, you’ll realize that the major issues Mush has been criticized with were not for his own sake, It was for the betterment on a National level for which you have to give sacrifices.

    All the operations, kidnapping, disappearance of people and blah blah started when we decided to take part in War on Terror. Everything that has been happening since then is the reaction of our own action. All of us saw it coming, but did we have any other option? certainly not. This was the consequence of our alliance with US, or else our condition would have been no different from Afgh or Iraq! All those actions were necessary, or US would have done it by themselves and results would have been far worse. Believe it or not, but there was a big devastation awaiting for Pakistan after 9/11, and Musharraf, and Musharraf alone minimized his affects. Yes, what happened in all those operations was wrong, but it could have been worse. He made decisions, difficult decisions, and in all circumstances he stood with the challenges, which resulted in the best growth of economy as never seen in history before, Media Sciences and Telecom sector shooted up, Pak gained 7th position worldwide in software development and etc etc. I can make a whole list of that!

    All in all, it is evident from countless resources that Pakistan really progressed in his regime, and he has proved himself a better leader than all the other possible candidates. Pakistan NEEDS a leader, and one thing is for sure that whoever will get the power, he/she will misuse it to some extent, thats natural, but we always needed a leader for the progress of Pakistan and he did it, though he misused his powers but the end result was far more promising than it is now.

    One more thing I want to add is that in your whole post, you have ONLY CRITICIZED Mush. If he was that bad, than how come Pakistan ‘survived’ for eight years and attracted more investment than ever before? It is because either you like to see only the dark side of a pic, or you are personally biased against him, as it seems from your post!
    That Saira, is the biggest problem of us as a Nation. No one is an angel, everybody does mistakes but why others are for? Why supporters are for? Whats the purpose of opposition parties in assembly? It was our responsibility to applaud Mush on his right judgement and condemn him on his bad decisions, but we did nothing. He did 80% of the good stuff, and we cried over 20% that he was a bad leader. Whenever someone does something wrong, our politicians and to some extent and the “awam” wants the leader to resign, or get the hell out of gov. Why can’t we see the fact that even good leaders do mistakes, WE have to correct them and support them whatever good they have done for us, but we don’t. In our whole history, there are almost no leaders about whom we as a nation say that they were good. Coincidence? or our own bad?

    I wrote this hefty post to tell the people that all whats happening around is our own fault, its not the leaders, its us. If we keep criticizing our leaders who have done atleast SOME GOOD for us, then who among us would want to go for presidency and work for the nation? Obviously no one would, because the common thought of school would be that no matter how good you try to prove yourself, you’ll always be criticized. The end result? Good leaders will born in this country, but will never try to make it to the throne! Trust me.

    At a Washington think tank, a senior expert Flynt Leverett acknowledged Pakistan’s key efforts in the fight against terrorism and came down on critics who in their discussions keep harping on US extending 10 billion dollars in assistance to the ally. He noted that statements that the United States has provided Pakistan with $ 10 billion in assistance since Sept 11, 2001 are misleading.

    “Let’s be true, more than half of that amount is not true “assistance” but rather reimbursements for costs accrued by the Pakistani military supporting US counterterrorism operations,” he said at the New American Foundation.

    Like I said before – the good side that you’re pointing out – how many people have really got to enjoy the benefits of these sectors. The concept that a cell phone in ever hand symbolizes development and modernity is hogwash. That needs to come with the mindsets which unfortunately remained the same. Investment was good agreed – but the sectors that made the economy rise were, I repeat, banking and telecommunication. And banks in Pakistan made that money by ripping people off. We have some of the highest interest rates in the world. Of course they’ll make a lot of money like that!!! Yes I’m criticizing Musharraf because he overstayed his welcome and he hurt a lot of people. Much more than all of you normally assume.
    Constantly saying that the US “could’ve done worse” is the saddest way to placate ourselves. What Musharraf did was bad enough – we dont need to throw yet another accolade on the heaving beast that is the US. We need to tame ours first.

    Mr. Hamza – if the army hadn’t been so involved in taking money and arms from the US and allowing hashish trade during the Russian war on Afghanistan we wouldn’t be here today. We and the US acted as allies and formed armies (on the name of Islam) and attacked our neighbours. We were the people who made the Taliban and we were the first, and in the end the last standing government, to support them. So now when the serpent comes to bite back we throw the blame on the US when we are equally to blame.

    I’m not a perpetual blamer – I’m just telling people to get over their heads that we can’t change and move forward. We need to stop feeling the “ehsaan” of our leaders when they let us watch channels on tv. Get out of the colonial mindset. We are people and freedom to do act, talk, walk, read, see is all our own. Not the rulers “ehsaan”.

    Our beloved country has suffered badly at the hands of the dictator and his drum beaters. The nation as a whole is in complete disarray and chaos. National integrety is at its lowest, international community regards us as a thrid class country and national confidence and pride has completely gone. The idiot dictator had been bowing to Negropontea and boucher. They were the actual rulers of Pakistan and the dictator’s masters. His tail wiggled for them always.

    Now he has handed over the reigns of the country in the hands of Zardari. he conspirated with Musharraf to get into power. The sign are too obvious for every Pakistani to see. There is no investigation ordered as yet by Zardari to try to find out BB’s killers. Does he seriously want any investigations? He is giving the dictator full support and is protecting his rubber stamped judiciary at all cost. Iss’nt it due to some sort of a secret deal with the dictator or what?

    Is Zardari a political person? Has he ever been that effective and big name in pak politics before in the life time of BB?

    Why is he protecting the dictator and his rubber stamped dogra adalt? Why he just ignores the last email of the BB in which she has nominated the dictator mush responsible in case anything happening to her? The part of the will that benefitted zardari has been rought about from no where and the email has been ignored as it does not benefit zardari.
    Appears that the dictator and zardari collaborated in this crime. The sign of a deal are simply too evident.

    Besides the policies that he has adopted are true replica of the dictator. There is no change at all. Only Mush has now put on mask of zardari.

    Poor Pakistanis, all their hopes and aspirations to see Pakistan as a democratic country with rule of law as a natural consequence of an independant judiciary, have all been shattered by zardari’s PPP NRO Group.

    But Pakistanis! Do not let your dreams be destroyed so easily. Our enemy wants us to have no HOPE for our future and country. That would be the end of us. Keep struggling and do not get disappointed. We have a bright HOPE for us and our country. Nations have fought longer battles than us in history to be able to get their rights and to progress.     The figures can bew even more impressive if you forget about the country, your independance and honor. Do not forget that in 1999 we just had gone nuclear and the rest of the world, ” later great firends of the dictator” had imposed sanctions against us. Materialistic people even then used to cribb about it. The financial crunch that we faced after the nuclear explosions. We now realize that if we had not carried out those nuclear tests to declare to the world about our going nuclear, India would have swallowd us easily. Look at the preseent tension with India and her attitude. What do you think is stopping her from carryout so called strikes on selected targets? Alhamdulillah Allah SWT with His Great Mercy Saved us after our nuclear capability.

    Besied one could get even richer by selling your daughters to the enemy than musharraf the filthy dictator made pakistan. Example is that of Egypt which surrendred to US and is now leading aid receiver from US.

Is he some sort of threat to the ideology you people (who have only destroyed Pakistan so far) are following? OR May be it is because is not not Punjabi, Sindhi etc OR May be you are working for the those international hidden hands who planned and conspired his ouster, created mayhem in Pakistan, destroyed Pakistan image internationally and continue to damage Pakistan by running useless blogs like this!

Cant you see that Nawaz Shreef have managed a successful recoup against Mushrraf with his big time partner Ifthikar Chourdy? He is still using Ifthikhar Choudry and other so called lawyers (liars) to get the power back… why your brains, eyes and ears are blocked? why you cant see the reality?

    Once Musharraf resigned.. the major goal was accomplished.. so there was no need for further protest by Civil society, Ex service men, media and people like you.. but tell me… Is Afia Siddiue back in Pakistan? Have you found all missing people yet? If not then where are the protesters? why they dont protest now…
