Imran Khan’s 2-Year Performance Report (2018-2020)

Nabeel AQ writes a thread on Imran Khan / PTI’s two year performance report – published on Twitter on 13 July 2020

These last two years have been immensely interesting, to say the least. Where one claim is that the sitting government isn’t performing, the other side is all praise for the leadership.

All in all, the conclusion is one – we’re moving forward, despite the situations. (1/n)

2) So, I sat down to do some research to draw a quick summary of what’s been happening. Since transparency is Imran Khan’s motto, it didn’t take very long.

Following is a quick look at what’s to be applauded in the last 2 years and especially the last few months.

Nawaz Sharif Convicted for 5 years

Congratulations Pakistan

It’s been a long hard struggle which truly started with MQM / Altaf Hussain in 2013 and we were handed the Panama papers in 2015 and this movement finally culminated today with the conviction of Nawaz Sharif

Many critics will find it hard to accept that it has been Imran Khan’s commitment and perseverance which has finally led us to this moment of conviction for Nawaz Sharif – IK had promised us a Naya Pakistan and the struggle to unseat these behemoths has not come easy, could you have imagined all this to happen back in 2013 – mashallah Imran Khan delivered on many fronts – true genuine opposition actually strengthens democracy — PTI fought the battle on the streets, but at same time stood back at some extremely critical junctions to allow judiciary to take over and cast the final decision – Justice in our society must remains Supreme

CBC Staff Misbehaves with MP’s and local residents

Today at CBC office MPA Samar Ali Khan and his team went to strongly argue for the water supply in this area, There is already a water crisis in the area, to make matters worse CBC has decided to charge an additional Rs 500 from all water tankers coming into the area, taxpayers, who already are paying water tax for “no-water” have the right to protest this

The Additional CEO was very abusive to all attendees including to the MPA, and asked them to immediately leave his offices, all stood their ground, the CFO then scampered off to the CEO’s office claiming that 100’s of people have ransacked his offices, the video will show a normal number of people peacefully arguing the issue of water.

After a few hours of stand-off PTI has decided to launch a stronger protest on Thursday morning 8:30am at CBC offices

Billion Tree Tsunami reaches 750 Million Trees & Counting

Billion Tree Tsunami – I remember when people mocked them when they started the four year project – it is now 3/4th done standing at 750 Million trees

Will have ZERO impact on election – as it will ONLY benefit the future generations of the people of KP (Likewise PTI’s focus on Health and Education) – even meeting the requirements of the Bonn Challenge  to reforest the entire world

All these are nowhere near the billions spent for cosmetic projects spent by the so-called economic experts (PML) where our generation and the future generations will have pay-back billions in loans and compounded interest for many many years to come

this is no small feat …. #Proud

Khan and Supreme Court begin looking into Sharif’s Panama Clevage

Nawaz Sharif Panama LeaksMy Analysis – Imran Khan’s only crime is that he hypes up his momentum to such an extent that for the followers there is possibly no turning back – that is his style of aggressive politics – he believes in it truly down to his heart and then shares it with us all so convincingly, looking straight into the camera that the people love him for that…

He advocated “Investigate or Resign” from the very start – he got investigate – I think that was good … for Pakistan – because choosing the last resort of “resignation” … means bloodshed, military finger, unrest etc etc you can list out a gazillions more items – but to push the resignation button you have to be convincing enough of your threat to make that threat & its softer alternate a viable option – and he did that convincing enough

Who buckled – I think it was Sharif who buckled, as he has now been forced to let the SC take a sneak peak into his Panama Cleavage, which he was trying to hide for 7+ months and would played the tippy toe for another few years

Details of Assistance being provided by KPK Govt to APS Victims

Efforts of the PTI Govt in KPK after APS School AttackThe tragedy of APS Peshawar on 16th December 2014 shocked the entire nation, how could a heartless group of individuals target a school filled with children – the tragedy impacted the lives of 144 innocent people who were killed in the attack with over 124 additional people injured during the carnage.

Since then, the KPK Govt has been doing a lot for the victims and their loved ones, there is no way that the parents can ever be fully compensated for their loss, but some effort has been done to support them, there were still reports of some disgruntled parents who were stil unhappy about their cases, but looking at their genuine pleas it seems they were angry as the perpetrators who had masterminded this carnage have not been caught, during the session even Imran Khan allowed them to voice their concerns and reassured them that all grievances shall be handled immediately

KPK Govt on the 16th Dec 2015 sent out a press statement listing out the assistance given to the victims and their family members – sent to all media outlets but it seems no one cared to report on the facts, I think instead of waiting for a media house to publish these facts even 15 days after the anniversary, I’m reproducing the update from the KPK govt. This is also just a humble reminder that PTI Govt in KPK has taken the full burden of the compensation while the Federal Govt is garlanding the public & media with mere statements of support

Details of Rehabilitation &/or Assistance support given by KPK Govt to the victims & survivors of the APS Carnage on 16th Dec 2014

  • Shuhada Students: 122
  • Shuhada Teaching / Non-teaching staff: 22
    Total Shuhada: 144
  • Seriously Injured: 73
  • Minor Injured: 48
  • Police Personnel Injured: 3
    Total Injured: 124

Facebook Mentions Live Stream with Imran Khan – Another First for PTI SMT

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has achieved another first in Social Media – used a very innovative app called Facebook Mentions (launched in Sept by Facebook) to livestream a Q&A with Chairman PTI Imran Khan from his house in Banigala Islamabad – hosted by Faisal Javed Khan and coordinated by the PTI Social Media Team.

The idea was conceived by the entire team and initially tested with Asad Umar a few days earlier after the completing his efforts in the successful Local Body elections in Islamabad.

Imran Khan came live on Facebook on 8th December and started answering questions as fed to him by Faisal Javed Khan, which were being collected live from the social media using the hashtag #IKLiveWithSMT

The urge to deliver newer and better ideas on social media has been primarily the push by the chairman himself.  On many occasions Chairman Imran Khan has applauded the PTI Social Media team for setting examples in social media, but has urged us all to strive for more and better ideas, oft he has said, to stay relevant and ahead you need to stay ahead of the curve and test new ideas and new concepts, failure will only lead to success in the future

Amongst many firsts in Social Media for example PTI Social Media team in September 2012 orchestrated Pakistan’s first ever Google Hangout with any political leader, which was viewed by thousands online and about 20 participants rotated through various cities across the world to personally ask Imran Khan a question or two, to which he responded unfortunately the Google Hangout idea fizzled away since youtube has been blocked now for many years.

Posted by Imran Khan (official) on Tuesday, December 8, 2015

The stream touched at one time a concurrent 28,000 live viewers but stats show the views over 300,000 during the hour long stream, it gathered 82,000 comments and was shared over 7,000 times  while the numbers continue to grow – the backend numbers are breathtaking and mind boggling

I’m excited that we have opened the doors to another stream of ideas for PTI (and other parties) and I’m quite sure many other leaders would be invited to host similar sessions.  We’ve learnt a few issues during the session which shall be sorted out in the future of which the biggest concern was a more direct way for social media users to ask questions and have them answered directly.  Inshallah we will iron out the kinks we would love to see a more regular Q&A Session with Chairman Imran Khan interacting with the public on the social media.

It’s fun to be amongst a passionate team of volunteers unified to a cause, I truly am proud of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Social Media team which has yet again delivered another first.

Qazi Jalal arrested in Peshawar for a Tweet

Scroll down for latest updates

UPDATE 1: 2:55pm Wednesday 28th October
UPDATE 2: 6:40pm Wednesday 28th October
UPDATE 3: 4:00 pm Friday 30th October
UPDATE 4: RELEASED ON BAIL 11:30 am Tuesday 3rd NovemberQazi Jalal

Today the FIA arrested a twitter activist @JalalQazi from Peshawar for posting a tweet on 22nd Sept, they placed upon him charges for violating the Electronic Transaction Ordinance of 2002 specifically clause 36: Violation of Privacy of Information and 37: Damage to Information Systems (read clauses below) these are, as per my understanding (?), non-bailable offences permitting the FIA unbridled arrest of Jalal Qazi for up to 90 days without follow-up

Qazi Jalal tweetDigging into the issue after his arrest, it seems the case hovers around a set of tweets made by Qazi Jalal on 22nd September (tweets deleted) where he posted referencing to an engagement card of a certain Mr Faizan Malik – who could be the son-in-law of Honorable Justice Irshad Qaiser, the judge who had according to Qazi Jalal granted bail to Ihsan Ali the Vice Chancellor of Abdul  Wali Khan University who was arrested a few days earlier on corruption charges.  Faizan Malik is a lecturer who has also been under investigation, of the 1400 appointees who were inducted into the university during the ANP tenure – starting his tenure as a lecturer in May 2012.  His CV hosted on the university website establishes the linkage of Faizan Malik as listed on the engagement card is the same as his fathers name listed there is the same, being the son of Ghulam Mohy-ud-Din Malik

On 15th September Ihsan Ali, the VC of Abdul Wali Khan University and three other educationalists were arrested by Ehtesab Commission and sent to a 14-day remand to Peshawar Central Jail for involvement in corruption to the tune of Rs 550 Million, the media published reports on this arrest partially siding with the ANP narrative and playing a sympathetic anti-educationist angle almost as if to blame Ehtesab commission for wrongdoing.  The case took an interesting twist when seven days later on 22nd September, Ihsan Ali was granted bail by the Honorable Justice Irshad Qaiser.  Which may have, in normal circumstances been a routine bail, but had it not been for some investigative sleuthing of Qazi Jalal who dug out an engagement card possibly establishing a conflict-of-interest between the honorable judge and her to be son-in-law Faizan Malik a lecturar at Abdul Wali Khan University, and possibly undergoing the same investigation

The on-ground reports from Peshawar is that, FIA is responding and harassing Qazi Jalal on possibly contempt of court charges started by Justice Irshad Qaiser, Ihsan Ali the bailed VC, ANP Senator Sitara Ayaz (who is ironically also subverting arrests from Ehtesab Commission under ‘stay orders’ issued by Honorable Justice Irshad Qaiser, Qazi Jalal reported on the Senators case as well) the case is also being propped up fully pushed by the  corrupt ANP party as they are intrinsically involved in the corruption scandal.

The more pertinent issue is if this tweet was wrong as deemed by the honorable judge, Qazi Jalal should have been asked by the honorable judge, even in pursuant of a proper legal proceeding to ask him to delete &/or apologize for this inaccurate information, but quite ironically it seems they may have chosen to bully and harass Qazi Jalal using the FIA to exercise the ETO ordinance 2002, which if you read the clauses below, there is truly no direct violation under which Qazi Jalal should be arrested, unless they choose to draw hypothetical conclusions to the wordings of the law, best part is that a tweet gathering a mere 8 retweets was deemed damaging the repute of the people involved in the AWKU and others directly/indirectly involved that required such drastic harassment

This is a very serious development, the Cyber Crime Bill which is presently in the National Assembly of Pakistan for approval in its present form, is also a prime example of what could happen if such weak laws are promulgated – it allows irresponsible state agencies to abuse vague injunctions to harass the citizens of Pakistan on the flimsiest of excuses, the present ETO clause 36 and 37 falls well outside realm of this arrest but the agencies found enough of an excuse to arrest & harass Jalal – It could happen to you too

UPDATE 1: Wednesday 28th October 2:55pm : Its interesting to dig around to find out how Qazi Jalal had access to the engagement card, it has come to our attention that Qazi Jalal tweeted this image of the card after spotting it on his facebook friends Haybat Khan’s timeline

The original poster made the update on 22nd Sept 12:47pm and Qazi Jalal made a post almost 8 hours after on 22nd Sept 9:14pm.  The FIA if are interested in a credible investigation should pursue the original content from Facebook (credit for the find Sidra Imran)

UPDATE 2: Wednesday 28th October 6:40pm:  Reports are coming in that all day efforts were being made by family and the local jirga to come to some understanding and have a Muafi Nama (Apology) signed between the parties, but we’ve have just found out that Qazi Jalal has been handed over to the FIA for a 2-day remand by the court.  Seems a contempt of court charge has also been tacked onto this case

UPDATE 3: Friday 30th October 4:00pm:  Qazi Jalal appeared before the sessions court judge for the hearing, the Judges family has refused to accept the apology – despite having forced / convinced him to sign it in the fist place, the sessions court judge remanded him to 14-days in Peshawar Central Jail – the jail conditions are horrible, its deplorable – I personally have seen the copy of the FIR the case is only registered as a violation of ETO 36 and 37 there is no Contempt of Court Charge.  The next hearing is expected to be Wednesday 4th November

UPDATE 4: Tuesday 3rd November 11:30am JALAL QAZI RELEASED ON BAIL:  After much of a traumatic experience it has been reported that Jalal Qazi was granted interim bail and released from Peshawar Jail – the reports are that the family came to some understanding to manipulate his release before wednesday.  Keep in mind this does not mean the issue is all sorted out, it only means Jalal Qazi has been harassed enough that they choose to release him on bail for sometime

Extraordinary Pakistanis: Dr Arif Alvi – Express Tribune

Express Tribune: Dr Arif Alvi is an acquired taste. He isn’t your typical flash in the pan Pakistani politician who rides his 1,000-watt charisma to answer difficult questions. Instead, Dr Arif is that rare Pakistani politician whose substance overwhelms his style. He quotes ideas from Plato, Maulana Maududi, Marx and Thomas Piketty with equal ease. Even if you’re a resident of his constituency in Karachi’s Defence or Clifton area, you might not know that he was shot twice while protesting against Ayub Khan’s military rule. “Suddenly my hand dropped and I started bleeding,” says Dr Arif, recounting the moment he was shot right before curfew. “I held my limp hand and walked towards the hospital. My fingers were paralysed for months. I thought I would have to give up dentistry as a profession after I was shot.” The bullets remain lodged in his body to this day.

Election Tribunals Justice Delayed is a Loss for Pakistan

Justice delayed for PTI DAWN: Analysis: Justice Delayed for PTI” – Having been mentioned in the article for the tweet “Dr Awab Alvi tweeted: sad fact what the election tribunal should have decided in 120 days, takes one year, 11 months and 23 days — justice delayed is justice denied.

What bothers me, is critics still see this as a IK vs PML issue, critics simply can’t fathom the fact that the sanctity of the vote is the ultimate cornerstone of having any semblance of democracy in Pakistan – if the sanctity of the ballot is not guarded with all the might of the ECP & judiciary democracy and the parliament are mere bricks in a crumbling castle. Unless you don’t publicly humiliate and prosecute those responsible for destroying the fundamentals of democracy, the next elections will be exactly the same. The art if delaying justice let alone tribunals is what has brought Pakistan to this lawlessness, rich & powerful skip from one date to the next until the issue may as well be long gone history.

Brings me back to the rebuttal debate I had with Zahid Ibrahim in August of last year, the Election Commission was responsible to deliver a 100% free and fair elections – at least the public should have felt some semblance of free and fair elections, not a 73% elections

No matter who wins in the re-elections in NA-125 does not matter, genuine Pakistanis could now cherish that after all the hue and cry, at least one constituency got exposed – imagine it takes one leader exerting all his heart and sole of 1 years, 11 months and 23 days to persevere with his mere grit to expose one constituency, whatever happens to a common man getting any semblance to justice …. is a sorry tale ….

Critics will/still paint this as a PTI victory, but in my heart and sole …. I think today – Pakistan won ….

Imran Khan & Arif Alvi’s “doctored” cell phone conversation leaked

The recent “breaking news” is about a leaked converstation between Imran Khan & Dr. Arif Alvi – which is undoubtedly multiple phone calls stitched together to portray a narrative / propaganda

What is more important is to publicly identify the propagandists involved in recording a private call — espionage by whom? is it even legal? is it invasion of privacy? but then going on to stitch / splice together multiple calls to suit a propaganda / narrative is that even conceivably ligit?

The more interesting aspect of this leak is that there is nothing damaging / incriminating about this conversation that deserves attention but for the sake of mudslinging on PTI, everyone is making this a big issue

Lets decipher the audio clip.

PTI wins Senate seats by a Whisker, but will the Senate Elections Change in the future – NO

Im happy, that PTI has successfully defeated the horse trading attempts in the KPK assembly (literally by our whiskers) – but what worries me more is that the status quo leash on Pakistan has  yet to be challenged and chopped to bits.

We cannot & should not let them continue this mess on Pakistan – PPP JUI-F and ANP all need a strict shut up call – without which Pakistan shall never have any semblece of genuine democracy as there shall never exist the foundation of a free and fair elections

Horse trading and floor crossing has always been patronized by all the status quo parties to their own advantage as and when needed – It is usually only when the ruling govt suffers, that they join hands subsequently to pass a resolution to put a permanent end to the horse trading fiasco which may have hurt them, examples being

  • MP’s have been strictly prohibited for voting against the finance budgets, as it has previously resulted in the collapse of a sitting Govt
  • MP’s have been prohibited from floor crossing – powers have given to the party leaders to ensure discipline
  • Voting for Prime Minister and Chief Ministers are open counting
  • No confidence motion is not by a secret ballot

Senate elections have always been controversial with abundant report of heavy buying and selling, but it has never face any significant resistance until PTI faced the threat of PPP, JUI-F and ANP attempting to buy out PTI MP’s almost reportedly reaching as a price tag of Rs 35 crore for each senate seat

It is my opinion that these senate elections have not shaken the PML-N hard enough (except for a mini-hiccup in Baluchistan where disgrunteled PML MP’s voted to elect a PPP MP – quite definitely on a price tag) the loss of this senator, I don’t think is significant enough that the Sharif’s will loose any sleep over to be even compelled to pass any constitutional amendment to ensure that no horse trading happens in the next senate elections

Hence PTI may have escaped a crisis – but Pakistan has not learned as yet, 2-1/2 years down the road – we shall be at the same juncture and the price tag of 35 crore would probably dwarf against the inflation of 2018 for each senate seat.

Another PLUS ONE for status quo – ZERO for Pakistan

Update on the APS Injured Student Ahmed Nawaz

For quite a few days Social Media was abuzz with concerns about the medical treatment of one of the school children injured in the APS attack in Peshawar named Ahmed Nawaz – ever-so Vigilant Media carried reports of an enraged father pleading to the govt of medical assistance (or lack of).

I personally had been tagged on a number of posts on this issue, and have tried my best to investigate the concerns with the hope of ensuring that the child gets the necessary attention, the more I delved, the more it seemed to be a mixture of genuine concerns but at the same time the issue was interspersed with political point scoring on behalf of Anti PTI proponents, either way my focus had to be on the safe recovery of Ahmed Nawaz, regardless of who paid the bill

The KPK govt from the get-go had promised compensation to all victims (Rs 20 Lacs each) and full medical coverage of the injured, the media attention raised by his father succeeded in grabbing more extended coverage by the KPK Govt, which additionally also pledged Rs. 3.5 Million to him if he needed international treatment, if such treatment options were not available in Pakistan. The Prime Minister of Pakistan in lieu of PML-N point scoring also pledged coverage to the child at PIMS Islamabad, but despite these promises it seemed the father was still discontent and was pushing to take Ahmed Nawaz abroad for further treatment as the medical attention was not up to par in Pakistan, I personally do not blame him, as a father, whose son may have suffered the most traumatic incident of his life – he has the right to get the best for his son.

The PTI Social Media team raised these concerns to PTI Chairman Imran Khan to investigate this matter personally, the Chief Minister of KPK Pervaiz Khattak and also the Health Minister Shahram Tarkai. All were forthcoming and assured the best possible treatment is being offered at all level, still there seemed to be some social media naysayers (maybe rightly so) who were in direct contact with the father and he expressed his utter dissatisfaction at any/all cooperation. And it was then pushing the citizen activists groups to lobby for support and in generosity pledge financial assistance for further treatment of Ahmed Nawaz abroad – viz-a-viz the KPK Govt had pledged full support in Pakistan (and now also abroad) if good/decent treatment is not available in Pakistan, but if its the fathers personal desire to take Ahmed Nawaz abroad then the funds can be raised from public donations but the focus to defame PTI govt in KPK on this issue is unwarranted.

KPK Govt Security updates after the Army Public School Attack

There are many people who ask what has PTI / KPK Government been doing in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province to counter the terrorist threat to the people living in the province and also to the school children of the area specially after the tragic Army Public School attack on 16th December which claimed the lives of over 140 school children.

We have compiled a short list of action items taken by the PTI govt in KPK

  1. KPK has almost 37,000 Schools.  5,000 of them are without boundary walls. KP Government had a 3 year plan of putting all the missing basic facilities in the 37,000 schools which included Boundary Walls, Toilets, Clean Water, Furniture, 6 Classrooms for Primary Schools, etc. Now the priority has shifted to finishing the Boundary Walls in all schools within an year about Rs. 1bn has already been allocated to the department with a promise of additional funds as per requirement of each school
  2. KPK Govt has also pledged to spend Rs. 11 Billion on Security Arrangements in Schools. Expenses will include Equipment and Training of School Staff
  3. The Threat Levels to each school has been categorized in three slabs as Low, Medium and High. All the schools are getting uniform security arrangements as per their threats level
  4. The arrangements include an 8 Feet High Boundary Wall, Razor Wires, CCTV Cameras, Armed Guards, Jersey Barriers, SOS Alert service, Alarm Systems and PODs (Professor on Duty) according to their needs
  5. The KP Government has again requested in writing to the Federal Government to return the FC to the province to control the No-Man Land between the Tribal and the settled area.
  6. KP Police already sensed this threat and were already preparing for it and that is precisely the reason that they initiated police training schools like the School of Investigation, School of Tactics, School of Intelligence and Specialized training to the Elite force for Counter Terrorism. All these training schools are operational and law enforcement personnel are being trained.
  7. Counter Terrorism Police Unit in KPK getting professional training to be fully equipment to combat Terrorists.
  8. KP Government has close liaison with National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) to ensure timely intelligence and response in case of an ongoing or a perceived threat
  9. Police Patrolling has been increased and Citizen Watch Committees have been erected to watch the Neighbourhoods.
  10. Children of the last attack are being treated in all Hospitals and we only have two remaining victims who are presently admitted in LRH and are undergoing treatment.
  11. CM KP has announced that in case of an injury that cannot be treated within the country, the Government of KP is willing to bear all the treatment expenses of these children abroad to ensure the best possible care for them. (This was announced for a child suffering from Nerve Injury after the attack at APS).
  12. KP Government is also keeping a close liaison with Public to implement any suggestions or ideas.
  13. KP Government has decided to name the schools after the martyred child in the native districts of Shuhadas.
  14. A major Roundabout in Peshawar will also be named after the Shuhadas of APS
  15. Archives Library will be renamed
  16. A conference room in the Provincial Assembly has already been renamed after Mrs. Qazi, the shaheed principal of APS
  17. KPK Govt orders to terminate illegal Afghanistan Mohajirs from all Govt & private jobs
  18. To counter terrorism and improve security of the people and public property, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has enacted three special laws within a short time:
    • Restriction of Rented Buildings Act
The KP Restriction of Rented Buildings Act 2014 requires the landlords renting their properties to do so only after proper background verification and provision of sureties by the tenant. The law further requires the landlord and tenants to get registered with the concerned police stations after submitting their particulars. Failure to do so is a cognisable offence and involvement of tenant in any terrorism activities in such a case entails vicarious liability for the landlord as well.
    • Restriction of Hotel Businesses Act
The KP Restriction of Hotel Businesses Act 2014 requires all hotels, inns, motels and rest houses to get registered with the concerned police station and to ensure provision of guest lists to the local police station on a daily basis. The law makes it mandatory for the hotel management to record complete particulars of each guest and verify their identities and to inspect the baggage of each guest.
    • Security of Sensitive and Vulnerable Establishments and Places Act
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Security of Sensitive and Vulnerable Establishments and Places Act 2014 requires the owners/management of public and profit making private establishments to make appropriate security arrangements for the safety of such establishments and places. Based on the target hardening theory, the law aims to make it mandatory for all such public and private places to perform their social responsibility. This law makes it mandatory for the police force to regularly check these establishments for ensuring the implementation of its objectives.
  19. In order to effectively check terrorism-related incidents, the KP police have sought permission for allowing them direct access to phone intercepts, NADRA database and FIA’s database on travel history besides provision of necessary equipment and software for boosting its intelligence gathering capabilities!
  20. KP Govt has issued a provincial ban on all hate, sectarian and extremist literature as well as radical speeches. District police officers have been requested to form vigilance committees to eradicate the dissemination of books, pamphlets, CDs and other similar material which could be disruptive to provincial peace.
  21. CM KPK announce a compensation package of Rs 2 million for the families of APS victims (link)

The KPK govt is fully geared to protecting its citizens in the time of crisis as best as it possibly can.

Dynamics of PTI #ShutDownToRebuild Strike in Karachi

The strike call for 12th December in Karachi was a tough & a strategic call made by Chairman Imran Khan on 30th Nov, it was a bold move to tactically increase pressure on the PML govt to rethink its negotiation strategy viz-a-viz to proceeding with an independent investigation of alleged election rigging in 2013. If peaceful protests for 120 days is not enough of a pressure tactic, it seems the govt needs to be physically shown that this is injustice in acceptable and proof of this contagious movement has taken a bigger momentum resonating all across Pakistan — Faisalabad on the 8th, Karachi on the 12th and soon Lahore on the 15th – Shutdowns are Pressure tactics to push for justice in Pakistan. What does one have to do, to get an investigation started in Pakistan? — When Push comes to shove, it seems shoving is then the order of the day.

Many supporters have a strong disagreement as to why PTI choose to adopt this strike strategy in Karachi, which to them resembles so much like the MQM-thug style politics and to make matters worse, images of burning tires were not helping as it portrayed violence, seemingly on the same track with MQM’s 30-min barrle of the gun-based shutter down calls seen too often in Karachi. Each Karachiite knows very well that the was a fundamental difference between MQM calling a strike and PTI appealing to people to join in a ShutDownToRebuild movement – Everyone knows that MQM uses militants on bikes roaming the streets and that this display interspersed with aerial firing, simply serves as the threat to establish the “voluntarily closure” along with other unfortunate tactics, they need not have to “work hard” to convince people, the guns do the convincing part quite well. PTI on the other hand DOES NOT SUBSCRIBE TO MILITANCY.

To organize the lockdown one must know the grass root dynamics of planning and ensuring a strike and I give credit to the PTI Karachi leadership to have understood the dynamics, planned well and executed to near perfection.

Before the shutdown there was a long debate on choosing to adopt the need to use tire burning strategy, but after a long discussion & a majority vote PTI teams allowed limited use of this method only for the sake of visual optics, but strictly NO threatening militant / armed strategy — only peacefully block roads, lobby aggressively, campaign and convince the public to join Imran Khan’s call to rebuild Pakistan. On the tire burning issue, I’m aware of many valid objections, I personally was a silent 50-50 spectator, personally felt we need to create the “environment” to be successful. So in part I would say I agreed, and hence I stand by the judgment call and the reason to write this blog post to explain why it was needed

A strike call in Karachi should be understood on a number of critical stages
