Update @ 1633: I need to stay in Power, Musharraf tells Sky News

President General Pervaiz Musharraf gave an interview to Sky’s Asia correspondent Alex Crawford today in response to the recent arrest of Imran Khan in Lahore, during the interview he told Sky News that “I am not a dictator, I want a democracy, the day when there is no turmoil in Pakistan, I will step down.”

The President of Pakistan also seriously felt let down by the West and by the media, to the extent that he went on to say “We may lose the battle on terror because of misreporting by some parts of the media in Pakistan and around the world.” Sky News

Commentary: Pakistanis may be naive but not stupid to fall for such lame excuses by him to stay in power, personally I think he has lost it and it should be time for him and his supporters to realize that he seriously needs to be sent to an institution(!). All these comments by President Musharraf simply go on to reinforce our struggle for the restoration of democracy in Pakistan. Its easy for him to blame everyone else for his truckload of mistakes made over the eight year reign of power but what amuses us is his naive (or not so naive) attempt to justify his Presidency. God Bless Pakistan

Update @ 1453: Imran Khan Beaten up and arrested

A number of reports continue to pour in stating that Imran Khan did show up at Punjab University to present himself in the rally scheduled there for today. A group of students belonging to a another political party (Islami jamiat Talaba, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami) colluded with the administration and huddled Imran Khan into their offices where they reportedly gave him a thrashing and then quietly shuttled him into a waiting police van

Imran Khan defiant in police custody LAHORE, Pakistan, Nov 14 (AFP) Former Pakistan cricketer and chief of Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf Imran Khan told AFP from police custody he was trying to start a student movement against emergency rule when he was arrested on Wednesday after more than a week in hiding. “I came to the university to lead a rally of students against the dictator Musharraf and his illegal actions, Khan said. “I would have presented myself for arrest in full public view but my goal was to set in motion a student movement. Khan spoke to AFP by telephone shortly after he was detained while trying to lead a rally at Lahore’s Punjab University. He said he was betrayed by a group of students. “The majority of the students were with me there but a group of them from Islami-Jamiat-Tuliba collaborated with the administration and police, Khan said. “They took me into the office and then forced me out into a van. They did not allow me to be arrested publicly. He added: “I have achieved my purpose. I have started the student movement, I have set the tone for it. Police earlier confirmed they had arrested Khan and would place him back under house arrest, which he slipped out from more than a week ago.

Imran Khan arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan was arrested here Wednesday after he emerged from hiding for the first time since emergency rule was imposed. Khan appeared at Punjab University in Lahore ahead of a planned protest against President Pervez Musharraf and was immediately pushed inside a campus building by a crowd of students. However, a student organization has reportedly locked Imran Khan in a room at the Punjab University demanding of Imran to leave the university at the earliest. The former cricket captain, who now leads his own opposition party, was placed under house arrest on November 3 after the state of emergency was declared, but slipped the net days later and had been in hiding ever since.

Its time for street protests : Imran Khan

Published in DAWN on November 13th
By Shehar Bano Khan

Looking defiant and all set to mobilise students on the streets on Wednesday (tomorrow) against Gen Musharrafs emergency rule, Pakistan Tereek-i-Insaaf Chairman Imran Khan lashes out at the Washington plan of installing its dream team of moderates.

Dismissing the election formula for being devised and dictated by the US administration, Mr Khan proclaims the students march will be the most momentous since the independence movement.

“It is going to be the most important movement since the movement for the independence of this country. Our theme is the restoration of the pre-emergency judiciary. Our party has been carefully planning this movement and we feel now the time is right to come out on to the streets to protest against the Provisional Constitutional Order, and reject the holding of elections under emergency. How can elections be held when the country has been put under emergency, when theres suspension of fundamental rights, no recourse to justice and rampant rule of the jungle? blitzes Mr Khan.

Update @ 0040: Imran Khan vows Protest

Imran Khan has vowed that he continues to lead full-fledged struggle against these recent unconstitutional steps taken by the Government to clamp down on the voice of opposition and he hoped that the youth could be mobilized in this connection. The PTI chief expressed concern that we must prepare for some more unconstitutional steps to be taken by the General in the future to simply protect his own position of power.

Imran Khan throughly believed that only the people are entitled to rule on a state that has been obtained through a public struggle and not through self appointment.

Imran also announced that he would lead a large rally of over 25,000 students at Punjab University on November 14 to show protest against this enforced rule

Update @ 1745: Imran Khan sends message on the battle for Pakistan

We received the following e-mail from Imran Khan who highlights the massive crackdown on genuine opposition, police brutality being used as a tool to induce fear for those attending peace rallies, and the need to restore an independent judiciary among other valuable insights:

The imposition of martial law under the garb of emergency should make it abundantly clear to everyone that dictators cannot afford even a semblance of either an independent judicial system or a free media. And neither can the assortment of criminals camouflaged as politicians who collaborate with dictators.
No one is fooled by Gen. Musharafs latest deception to hang on to power. The war on terror has served him well so far and so why change a successful strategy; spread fear in the western capitals by invoking images of bearded men with guns and in the meanwhile brutally crush all dissent within the country, as was recently done by the Burmese Military. Having inducted pliant and amoral judges through the PCO, the next step would be to massively rig the elections while keeping the media muzzled. What he hopes is that he will again have a rubber stamp Assembly, a controlled majority and a friendly opposition, while real power will rest with him for another 5 years.

So, what we are witnessing is the first phase of the plan. Massive crackdown on the genuine opposition, lawyers, human right activists and the civil society. He is hoping that the police brutality will induce enough fear in the people for him to crush all dissent within a couple of weeks, before he takes the next step of getting himself endorsed by his pocket judges.

Update @ 1600: PTI Information Secretary sends activism message for students

As Pakistani security forces prepare to clampdown on new rallies today, I spoke to the PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf — Imran Khan’s political party) Information Secretary — Akhbar Barbar, via phone, who sends out the following message to students organizing and attending peace rallies, while also echoing Shabhaz Sharif’s call last night, for students to rally peacefully:

– Wear black or yellow arm bands to voice your silent statement which is very effective in rallying for a democratic Pakistan and lifting the imposed martial law

– To ensure all police and armed forces’ brutality against students and demonstrators are documented and publicized, invite the electronic media to all student-organized rallies

– Build a network with students at every university in Pakistan and organize rallies on campus at same timings across the country

– Make a unified strong statement using placards, wearing arm bands and handing out car stickers for a democratic Pakistan without martial law.

– Initiate rallies to kick-off within campuses and at other educational institutions

– I encourage ladies within the student bodies to come out and join peace rallies since police forces (mostly male-dominated) usually back off and wait for women-police officers to arrive, this gives them time to also make their voice heard.

– Coordinate all activities and rallies together as one united network of students, increased linkage within universities leads to a larger peace message that creates an impact.

Imran Khan gives message of Resistance

A video message by Imran Khan recorded from an undisclosed location while he is defying arrest. Imran Khan, the leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (Justice Party) urges the youth to stand up for the country, while he asks the west to understand the fact that Musharraf is not fighting a war of terrorism but using this as a cloak to ensure he stays in power, and the only system preventing his reign of power was the Judiciary an with the emergency he has replaced all the judges with a string of corrupt judges who will accept all his conditions

Inside the mind of a Supreme Court Judge

SC PakistanSupreme Court of Pakistan is about to give its verdict on Qazi Hussain Ahmed’s petition and it should be interesting to find out what possibly would be going through the mind of a supreme court Judge sitting not only at one of the most important and respected position in Pakistan but also at the brink of a possible division in history between pre & post 9 march of Pakistan.

The long & eventful struggle by people of Pakistan led by highly active lawyers community along with the civil society finally came to an end (or new beginning?) on July 20, 2007. I didnt mention political parties in above on my personal analysis of their failure to prove their sincerity & dedication with the cause, except possibility Imran Khan, the Center right voice who raised the slogan of No-Justice No-progress in 1996 when even prominent political voices like Benazir & Nawaz hardly seemed bother about this important balance-act in a society and country.

This post, in no way attempts to predict an outcome in this petition. It only tries summaries different influences that are not alien to a Judge’s mind

The Toothless Election Commission

Election Commission of PakistanBy: Naeem Sadiq
Comment from Teeth Maestro: I received this article from an email list and felt it important to share with everyone, more interestingly I had an image perfectly suited for this article, to the letter, so enjoy

One must give due credit to the pious MQM for having realized that Imran Khan does not possess the impeccable character that their own leadership is endowed with such abundance. While this discovery may not fetch a Nobel for early character detection capability (ECDC), it would long be remembered for raising pettiness to new heights.

There is little doubt that we could have witnessed our first virtual parliament, had the Election Commission bothered to correctly scrutinize the 300 odd fake degree holders, loan defaulters, drunkards, murderers, kidnappers and ‘bhatta’ takers during the 2002 general elections. Although late in the day, it may still be important to take a quick look at how the clueless and gutless election commission completely failed to filter out the gang of 342, most of whose members were well within the ambit of Article 62 and 63.

George Galloway’s Speech on Pakistan

George GallowayI have long since been a fan of George Galloway, this time he works tirelessly to arrange for a session titled “Restoration of democracy in Pakistan” in the UK House of Commons. George Galloway first made his remarks and it was later followed by a response by the Minister of State, Mr. Geoff Hoon.

I needn’t say much about George Galloway’s speech as he was truly exceptional, had all his facts perfectly, was upfront at challenging UK’s support for Musharraf and also grilled the Minister on why UK had been harboring a terrorist by the name of Altaf Hussain for so many years and is allowed to run a terrorist organization ‘from a sofa, on Edgware Road’

Its sad to see Mr. Goons response which was embarrassing as he continued to support Musharraf’s reign on Pakistan by praising his Anti-Terrorism activities and also shed light on the holistic vision called ‘Enlightened Moderation’. Looking at this response I pray that the English bureaucracy does not overshadow the investigation of Altaf Hussain initiated by Imran Khan for his involvement in terrorism related activities in Pakistan. We all know had he been a bearded mullah sitting on an prayer mat in some isolated masjid in London, he would have been cuffed and sent to Gitmo within the blink of an eye simply on the suspicion of any involvement, but sadly with all the evidence gathered against him Altaf Hussain is not a mullah, and it seems as if this get-up does not ‘look like a terrorist’ it may be possible that he may yet again slip through the cracks. For the sake of the future of Pakistan – I hope that Justice is served

Imran Khan vs Imran Farooq

A must see dialog between Imran Khan of PTI and Imran Farooq of MQM on View Points from London. The discussion should have been good, but it seems that Imran Farooq did not prove to be a good rival, he mumbled and stumbled through the show without much substance.

The most hypocritical comment which I feel must be mentioned was when he talked about the ‘agencies conspiring against MQM’ during the May 12th massacre, had if not the TV channels not captured this live this lie would have been drilled down our throat with conviction, but as they say pictures speak louder then words, sorry Dr. Farooq, you have been found wanting.

Throughout the interview Imran Farooq remained on the back foot quite literally mumbling support for the lost and fading MQM ideology but was able to sneak a lone punch when he had Imran Khan talking on the Article 62 and 63 charges against him, but even then the goon fumbled his way back to the corner

Bottom line, I feel Imran Khan bowled him over with an in-swinging yorker. He has been sent back to the pavilion, and we await the next batsmen to come onto the crease….

The Woolmer Murdering Circus & Nasim Ashraf

Cricket Bloggers of Pakistan: After over three months of investigation the Jamaican Police announced the closure of Bob Woolmer’s death as having died of natural causes. For Pakistanis it was a definite relief, the Pakistan team were definitely suspects in the investigation and it comes as a relief to one and all that none of our players had any hand in this mishap.

What needs to be addressed is the circus created by the Jamaican police in the world media, the first autopsy report claimed that the hypoid bone was fractured (March 23) which is a good indication that he was strangled to death, based on this report I feel the lead investigator, Mark Shields was correct in starting a murder investigation. With the ongoing But on later autopsies there was no evidence of Hyoid Bone fracture at all. This is without doubt a grave error on the part of any medico legal doctor to make such a strong statement without even have x-rayed the specific bone showing his evidence of fracture.

Kick the Killer out of UK Petition

Altaf Hussain and UK passportA group of Pakistanis have started this online petition to convince the British Prime Minister that enough people care that this Karachi Killer should be sent out of the UK. We all know that Imran Khan is there in the UK discussing with lawyers about preparing the case to file in the UK courts, rumors are that the lawyers need a little more time to digest the case and make it into a rock solid, close and shut case.

I doubt that there is any shortage of evidence as Imran Khan has claimed to have a European Commission report which allegedly finds Altaf Hussain intrinsically involved with local terrorism while he lives on British soil. Hence I feel there can only be one attempt to take this Karachi Killer to court and that should have a good attempt with no leaks.
